Anyone know how successful Serenity was

I am wondering if anyone knows how successful the movie and DVD sales/rentals were as far as dollar amounts. Curious to see if there is a chance yet of a sequel, or if I need to go buy 5 more movies. I do recall seeing the movie cost 40 million to make, and it made around 30 million in the theaters, and I know I chipped in $20 on the day the DVD came out.

Well, they don't actually give out dollar figures for dvd sales because the studios like to be cryptic that way, but it has been estimated that the movie has sold more than 2 million copies.

This means that Serenity is most likely out of the red and into the black now. I've seen various estimates of the movie's overall cost being about 55 or so million and the take so far is something like 60-65 million. Still not enough for more SereniFly, but we're slowly getting there. I think the show and the movie continue to draw in new viewers every day (if you follow the posts or the chat in here, you'll probably agree), so maybe with time it will become profitable enough.

But in the meantime, it definitely wouldn't hurt if you went out and bought those five copies. I'm sure you can find people to give them to I have bought six copies so far (one for me, three that I've given out as gifts, one for loaning, one that I haven't yet decided whom to gift it to) and intend to send another to a friend that lives in a different state. She has never seen FF/Serenity, so I'm sure we'll also have another new convert

Oh, btw, the movie has pulled in just under 39 million in box office worldwide. But unfortunately, the studio does not get to keep a fairly substantial portion of this. However, the estimates that it has become profitable have taken this into consideration and it seems to be the consensus that we've finally started making money (although I have not personally seen a penny ).

Also, the 2 million copies does not include the foreign releases. So those should also bring in a tidy sum seeing as how the foreign box office was about 15 million to the USA's 25 million. And I'm not familiar with the cut that a studio gets from foreign dvd releases, but I do know that dvd's are often far more expensive in some European countries than the U.S...
