Just one funny observation, seems every other episode Book was being knocked unconscious, or shot, and finally ending up on his back one final time to die in Serenity the movie. So weird to see him dead in the movie first, then see the series, and get attacted to his character after the fact.

It sucks, point of fact.

Just keep on walkin', preacherman...

Anyone have any theories on what exactly Book was/did before becoming a shepherd?? For a shephard, he was pretty handy with a gun and his identity card sure got him service from the Alliance.

Could it be he was once a spy that repented against his many sins??

One thing to remember about Book is he is quite old. He may not have been what he used to be. Between when he was wounded in Safe and getting Alliance help quickly, and disarming Dobson in the pilot I'd say he has had Alliance training. He has so much knowedge of crime and everything else. He also said in the BDM that he wasn't born a Shepherd. So I think he gets knocked out cause he isn't what he used to be, and he always gets caught off guard. Maybe that's why he isn't working for Alliance anymore...then found religion some how.

I think Joss made sure Book got knocked out before every fight very much on purpose. I think he didn't want to reveal the fact that Book was a more than decent fighter, especially for a shepard.

Looking at the evidence of his ident card which gives him top notch Alliance medical help, his extensive knowledge of basically everything, and the few glimpses we get of his fighting skills (Disarming the fed in the pilot episode) I would say Book was once an Operative of the Parliament.

So getting back to the question, that's why Joss made sure to knock Book out whenever a fight started, so that Book couldn't start using his mad samurai skills lol.

I agree with that, cause in the first episode "Serenity 1", Book was a bad mamajamma, until he got knocked unconscious of course.

You're forgetting his part in War Stories. The man handled that rifle as if it were a part of him.

I am thinking that he may have been an operative. And the all of the horrible things that he had seen and done forced him to quit and become a preacher to try and save what was left of his soul.

Just my $.02

Make no mistake Book was a bad man, an Operative? maybe, High military? definately. Blue sun? Who knows.

All of the above?

I wouldn't want to assume anything about our Shepard, but I do believe he knows their is no about of good that can save his soul. He can still do good works, and save others, and that is what drives him. He must have fallen far, done some vile things in his past, the strength to rise above that, is not measurable.

that's my 2 cents of what i though he was, and could be.

Never get tired of seeing Book conspiracy threads. Trust me, there have been lots of talk about Book. You should check out the old threads and see whats been discussed. It's a theory to many that the reason the Operative was in the movie in the first place was Joss's way of explaining a part of Books past without Book ever having to actually give anything up, thereby still keeping the mystery but possibly answerring a few questions about his past.

I suggest looking for these threads and reading the posts, interesting stuff. And yes, he was on his back alot. And to think I thought Inara held that distinction.

If I'm a bitch, then life just got interesting

In The Message, Book also knew surprisingly much about Alliance cops and their jurisdiction. Makes one wonder.
