As I was running yesterday I started putting some of our new info together. When what's-her-face said that a friend of a friend who saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavors last night saw Nathan, Gina, and Summer at the CW offices, I was giddy. Then we heard nothing. There was some speculation about CW bringing the show back. Since then we've heard that Alan and Adam (perhaps they do it alphabetically?) have been cast in new series. They were conspicuously absent from the CW sighting. Now we know why. They've got new jobs. I don't see a FF series working without either one of them, especially Jayne. Does this spell the end?

You have two jobs Browncoats:
1-Convince me I'm wrong. Someone explain to me that the letters and emails are being read by someone literate and that there is hope in the verse for more adventures.
2-Cheer me up. This has me downright pouty. I'm not used to being optimistic, and I think after having my hopes thusly dashed I won't be again.

I am happy that Adam and Alan are working as it will be good to some of the FF actors on the small screen again.

That being said, not all pilots make it to air, and if they do, as we all know very much to our ruttin displeasure, shows do get cancelled very shortly into a season.

So I say we hold, hold till they get back!

I'll be in Jaynes bunk

...now I know this hurts but a new FF series would not be requiring Alan Tudyk's services as you should know if you've caught the BDM...

Just thinking about it makes me sad :(

Still, from what I gathered, Whedon is more interested in doing some theatrical productions then a new show. What I'd really like? A mini series, 6-8 hours I'd say, four just isnt enough, that tells a story about someone else besides our intrepid crew, give us a different perspective on the Verse.

Good point, however I'm worried about them being contracted to the network so that when the shows are cancelled they'll still belong to the enemy.

Here's something to cheer you up...

There may be no more, Firefly, there may be no more Serenity, but soon, someone else is going to come up with a story just as compelling, and characters just as real. I've learnt never to hold loyalty to any one tale, and not to grieve too much over the passing of one (and yet while there's still hope to fight to keep it alive) because I believe in the power of story and that 'lightning in a bottle' doesn't have to be as rare as everyone thinks.

I'm not sure if there'll be anymore adventures with Mal, but I am sure that there will be people out there - some of them inspired by Joss - who will be itching to tell tall tales of their own.

And they will blow our gorram socks off.

I'd rather seven different special and wonderful little series of stunning imagination, than seven series of Firefly, believe it or not, as long as they got all their stories told in 22 episodes each. (Though I would probably maim someone for at least a second season of Firefly)

P.S: Just bought Serenity! Yay! And it's as good as I remembered it! Double yay! And at least five people from work are buying it! Treble yay!

Not sure what the CW sighting was all about or why they were there, but Joss said he hasn't heard anything from them. There is always hope, and with the stellar DVD sales I can't imagine that nobody would want to continue the series. Probably more likely that we'll see a new movie though.

Mayhaps you should change your screenname to Kaylee, as you are insufferably, and welcomely, cheerful.

Come to think of it, I'm not sure welcomely is a word. See how addlepated this has me? There I go again, I doubt that's how you spell addlepated.

Ya never know what's up with these execs in TV land but I do know if the SciFi Channel can produce a miniseries about dragons and wizards ("Dark Kingdom" or some such thing I think it's called) I KNOW they can produce a Firefly related miniseries. And don't even get me started on the crap planned for the FOX network...

At this point I think that's what would happen. Anything new would be "related" to the original. Still set in the 'verse, still have some of the main characters but develope a new story line. I think Joss has said as much when asked about future possibilities.

But without so many of the original characters (Book and Wash because they're, well, indisposed, and Jayne because he's playing a cheesy cop) will Joss bother? Will it have lost its luster and lose his interest?

That rarely happens anymore, and when it does, it's useually someone who the network sees as a new, up-and-coming star. And even then, they're hardly iron-clad deals, unlike the old studio-system days.

The bottom line is...something is up.

We had the CW sighting which was never discredited.

Alan and Adam are in PILOTS...I love those guys but for every 20-25 shot only one makes it.

My theory...whatever channel picks it up (CW, Sci-Fi, *shudder* the Fox demonseed) I strongly feel they will do a mini-series first to gauge popularity and ratings (see Battlestar Galactica). If it produces decent ratings, a series should spawn...with the downside being another DVD package for the producer to pawn.

Now will Joss lose interst, be too busy, etc?

Maybe...but as someone posted on another thread Joss was only involved in writting 5 of the original episodes. Is it too inconceivable for Joss to Executive Produce and write an episode or to a year...I don't think so.

This very moment, our BDH have their best chance EVER of returning to the small screen...where there is hope (and the almighty dollar, pound, euro, etc.) there is life.

And "Hope" is what we Browncoats do best.

We will hold...we hold till Mal gets back.

The sighting itself may not have been discredited, but there is nothing going on. Joss debunked this rumor himself. Maybe they had a mutual friend there.

I wouldn't say it's the end. I wouldn't say it helps either. I could easily see Joss start a series without Jayne in it though. If you've watched Angel from the beginning to the end, you'd have seen that Joss can do a pretty good job of changing the regulars from year to year. I know that Firefly felt different somehow, but I'm sure the cast would have changed a lot by now if it had been on the air this whole time.

*sigh*

I know Joss "debunked" the rumor in his witty wordsmith kind of way...just like he "debunked" the "myth" of a Firefly movie about 2 months before it landed in Variety.

Also, I find the theory of a "mutual friend" at a newly invented TV channel...just a bit of a stretch.

I know it was a stretch, but that's the best explanation I can come up with.

Did he really do that? I don't know, he seemed pretty clear that he hasn't heard anything. Don't know why he would be that evil to lie to us about it.

Joss did say if there ever was going to be another series it would be neither Firefly nor Serenity, but a completely different spin-off using whoever survived/wanted in. I reckon movies/tv movies are our only hope now, along with Joss' new comic series out later this year.

By now you have been told about the odds against any one pilot leading to a show and the odds against any single show being a success. But you should also consider that it is possible for someone to act in more than one show at a time particularly if one or the other of the shows is less time demanding because the part is small or there is a large ensemble cast that a player could add to in an infrequent way and still be interesting.

It's not the end of hope if any given rumor doesn't pan out. There are so many different ways that Serenifly could come back and so many compelling reasons to believe it eventually will (more browncoats every day, attractive and talented cast, brilliant writers and producers, etc.) that being depressed because a single scenario (out of many possible situations) hasn't born fruit is an utter waste of maudlinity. And if that thought doesn't cheer you up just pop Trash into the DVD tray and giggle for a bit. Works for me.

From what they have said of they show, I think both Alan and Adam would come back in a second if their was a antoher series of Firefly

But my main hope is that the movies will continue and maybe a mini-series

NervousPete, great point!

Milford, here's something to cheer you up. Remember that it was 19 years between ST:TOS and ST:TNG. And 23 years between BSG and the new BSG. And it was 6 years between the original Gundam and Zeta Gundam, a franchise that eventually spawned seven TV series over 25 years.

The number of Browncoats, and viability of future projects, is ever increasing. Even if it's not tomorrow, it will probably still happen. Just have faith! Or Eliza Dushku, whichever...

Keep it up, I'm starting to perk up a bit. You guys are bringing up some great points. I suppose a bit of time between the series and the next round is OK, but I'm still a bit worried. Nathan is the one who worries me the most. I know it's a matter of time before everyone else sees what we see. Then he'll be off to bigger and better things. This of course is not meant to dismiss the rest of the crew, I'd take a bullet for any of them, but Nathan is certain special. As is Summer....and Adam....and Alan I suppose...Ron too...Gina isn't bad....and Jewel...don't forget Sean...and Morena. But that's it. The rest of the crew is just OK.

Yes. And Yes. If we're thinking that any new 'verse-related show wouldn't be Firefly or Serenity, then it stands to reason that it would be a fundamentally different show, given Joss's past efforts. Think of the Buffy spin-off "Angel"; it was set in the same universe and timeline, but it was quite a different show, with quite a different feel to it. More film-noir detective-y, a little less teen-angsty. They run into the same kind of problems, but deal with them in different ways. I could see another show set in the Firefly 'verse doing something similar; maybe they run into Badger or Niska, maybe they occasionally run into Mal or cross paths with Serenity, stuff like that...

I think you're right. The more recognition Nathan gets and the other cast members get the more likely there will be another BDM.

I'd love another series but I think the best hope is in movies. The crew is already signed for 3 movies. And besides, actors can and do make movies in between the shooting schedule of a TV series.

Here's how I see it:

It took a small and highly-dedicated fanbase to get the Serenity in the air again with the Big Damn Movie. Now that that's come out and DVD sales are doing fairly well (I don't think anyone involved in making it had any unrealistic expectations of this being a HUGE box-office success, so relatively speaking I'd bet the movie faired better than expected.)

And with the movie, there's more and more of us Browncoats showing up and looking to fight the good fight. I figure if the underdogs of sci-fi geekdom could go against overwhelming odds and get us the movie, just think of what can be done with even greater numbers. Myself among them, the new recruits could possibly be the fresh reinforcements needed here. We haven't had to wait through all those years with no good news until the BDM, and we're still fired up about the verse.

Could be some time before anything concrete happens, but if patience has paid off in the past, it certainly can once again.
