Joss Whedon is the creator of cult favourite TV series Buffy The Vampire Slayer and its spin-off Angel. He also created the short-lived Western-in-space sci-fi show Firefly and wrote and directed its big-screen incarnation, Serenity. Whedon is currently writing the script for the forthcoming Wonder Woman film. Serenity is out now on DVD.

Why was Firefly cancelled so quickly?
The network disliked the show. They didn't get what I was trying to do, so they gave it a bad time-slot and didn't show the pilot. Because we had this sword over our heads, we tried to make each episode as cool, mythic and fun as possible.

What was your inspiration for Firefly?
I'm interested in history and I was reading about the American Civil War. I'm also interested in Westerns, the frontier life of the time and science fiction. I hadn't seen a combination of those things. Science fiction has become perfectly presented and insanely scrubbed. I wanted to see it dirtied up a bit- like in Alien.

Will there be a sequel to Serenity?
It didn't do that well at the box office, so it depends on DVD sales. If the sales are huge, I think they'd consider it but I don't rate our chances highly.

Is it disappointing when something you've put so much effort into flops?
I carried this project on my shoulders for a long time. We'd have loved more people to see it, or for it to have done better. On the other hand, the people who saw it really enjoyed it. I'm happy with the reception it got.

When you look back at Buffy and Angel, would you change anything about them?
I'm not big on regret, I don't spend a lot of time on it. Part of making TV is the process-you just have to churn it out. At one point, I was making three shows a week. Even when you think everything's gone perfectly-you've spoken to the actors, rehearsed them, thought how to direct it from every angle-even then you miss the guy standing in the background wearing a funny hat.

Hardcore Buffy fans seem to believe you had a masterplan. How far ahead did you plan?
Certain major events were planned a year in advance. The first series was planned entirely in advance because it was only 13 episodes and we didn't know if we'd be getting a second season or not. I'd plan the general arc of the season and the villain, then leave it to the writers. I knew some of the key events- I planned Buffy's mother's death two years in advance-but sometimes it's best not to plan. You don't want to box yourself in.

Is there any chance of Buffy or Angel coming back?
We've been discussing how to do things with a different format-maybe something straight to DVD that wouldn't be a full series. There are various characters that I'd want to explore further.

You're working on the Wonder Woman film-will she be another feisty teenager like Buffy?
She's going to be a little bit older but her age is left unstated. She's going through an adolescent rite of passage because she's new to the world. She comes from a civilisation where she's rather perfect, so she's the opposite to Buffy in many ways.

How different is writing a character everyone is already familiar with?
Familiar is exactly the right word. She's an acquaintance. This film will be about introducing you to Wonder Woman. There are benchmarks we need to include, so she'll be wearing the outfit and there will be the bracelets, a golden lasso and Greek gods-but they'll all be shown in fresh ways. The challenge with my other projects was to make the viewer believe the story needs to be told. With Wonder Woman, it's easier because people are familiar with the story already.

Aren't you in danger of making feisty young heroines a cliché?
I have to be very careful to avoid becoming an old guy who just has one trick. The fact people still talk about me writing these strong female characters suggests there aren't enough of them around. It's amazing how many anti-role models there are for young women, so it's important to have these ones.

I'm a science fiction geek from birth-that's just who I am. In this case, I was inspired by reading a book on the Civil War and it all came from there. Science fiction is like a blender-you can put in any historical experience and take influences from everything you see, read or experience.

What scares you?
Standard scary things-zombies, insects, things behind doors. The big thing that scares me though is the knowledge that we are ultimately alone.

I got sullen right off too Diska, but we still have the DVD sales to go. We can't lose hope yet, because the DVD is selling well in the UK and Europe and we'll just have to see how it all comes out in the end. I still think, even if we don't get a BDSequel on the big screen, someone will want to revisit the 'verse on the little screen. Our fan base is growing... someone is taking note of that... or maybe we have to keep writing them and making them aware that we are growing.

I got the distinct impression that Firefly is his favorite creation. No offense to Buffy or Angel fans, but Firefly has so much more subtext and historical depth. Buffy's a bit more of a.... vampire babe soap opera. Seriously, the guy who cancelled this show is going straight to

I wouldn't get discouraged. Joss knows the score, and so do we. Times are tough, the odds are against us. What else is new?

Because we knew what the show was about from the first frame. Sometimes when you go back and look at shows, it's not always clear what's going on. There was also an extraordinary energy about the cast which made shooting a lot easier. Everyone on set was really happy about the work they were doing and that's rare.

The Love for this story shone thru the screen to us the fans! I will hold out hope for a sequel to either Firefly or Serenity. I can only hope that DVD sales keep increasing.

Does any one know where the sales stand? And at what dollar amount is needed?

Also, I think the DVD sales will at least be enough to get someone's attention. Universal is bothering to release Serenity as one of their first HD-DVD movies. That says something to me.

Maybe we'll at least get a TV movie which would later be released on DVD. I really don't feel like the franchise is at an end yet.

So kids, perhaps, like Universal and Joss Whedon, we need to start crossing all our fingers for a sequel and maybe, just maybe, like the studio coming out of the red, Serenity Part 2 can come out on the big screen.

I think the classic example, correct me if you have a better one, was the original Austin Powers movie. The film did ok (and as I recall had one heck of a marketing campaign), but no one thought there would ever be a sequel. Turns out there was a huge audience, teenage boys -- might as well be upfront about it -- and the combined DVD sales/rentals convinced the studio to make another. And as well all know, both sequels were huge money-makers. If the sales numbers/rentals given in the posting above hold, I think the odds of some form of sequel are good. I don't hold out much hope for a return of Firefly, as such, Josh seems determined to move on, but "Serenity II: the Revenge" or some such thing, or a series of mini-series, if that statement makes sense, are real possibilities.
The economics of the movie industry are rapidly shifting -- away from traditional B.O. to DVD related numbers. Serenity will likely catch the wave and I think will be one of the first films (?), story-sagss (?) (I'm looking for a word and can't quite find it) to do so, continuing in a variety of media. This future ain't perfect, but it is not hopeless either and probably as good as we are likely to get.

After all the work I've done the past few months converting people, and introducing them to the 'verse, when they had never even heard about it, I liked to think that I was making a difference. Hopefully in the long run, I have and will continue to do so, but let's hope we get some encouraging news for a change that comes from a credible source.

If you look back at the old threads on this board the people who loved the show when it got cancelled didn't have a hope in hell of getting the DVD's and a BDM. And look what happened. This crew and idea is something rare.... people fall in love with it. We have to have faith that there will be more fallin' in love and they will recruit and on and on it goes. Yeah, but it sure would be nice to have some GRENADES, dontcha think? :)

For me, based on absolutely nothing but a pie-in-the-sky number, I'd think $100 million would get a studio's attention. Let's face it, as "investments" go, getting a 2-to-1 return on your dollar ain't a bad take at all. And I'd be surprised if Serenity didn't hit pretty close to $100 million by the time the DVD is released and sales are tallied worldwide. And movies that hit $100 million in sales tend to get noticed... sometimes because they cost $200 million to make, but that's not the case here. ;)

Meanwhile, we hold, we buy the Serenity DVD, the Shiny Edition DVD with new extras (if it really does come out), the officially licensed merchandise (wish they'd come out with MORE of that, though. More would be better), and even the un-licensed merchandise (just to keep spreading the word). And we keep on going with our own word-of-mouth campaign. And we keep passing around the Serenity and Firefly disks. It's a rare person who watches the Firefly disks and DOESN'T become a fan!

what's good to see is that the firefly dvd is still going strong in the UK as well. on Amazon, it's sitting at no. 5 at the moment, though yesterday it had dropped to 8.

By way of comparison, House (released same day as serenity ie monday 27th feb) is sitting at 18. it's very likely that there will be another series of House, yet there's no movement on Firefly. make sense to you guys?

However, you all may recall the angel quote mentioned in the Firefly commentaries: If nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do. This search, this emptiness Joss feels does, ironically, fuel his writing: heroes fighting evil and wondering what we're all doing here. that sorta thing. or in the case of firefly, wondering what we're all doing here, while stealing from folk

SERENITY SPOILERS BELOW

Regarding the existentialism thing ... when I read quotes like this from Joss (or when I listen to the commentary on Obejcts in Space), it makes me wonder where he was ultimately going with Shepherd Book.

As much as I loved Serenity, I'm still upset over the death of Book, and have wondered if the character scared Joss in some way. He clearly doesn't sympathize with the Book's motivations, and perhaps he ultimately didn't know what to do with the character.

Anyway, just musing. The bit about the sequel is just too depressing to think about.

At what point does this become necrophilia?

Sure his comment was depressing - but then life without firefly is depressing. Isn't that why we're all here (on FFf.net) We can commiserate together, indulge our wildest fantasies (no, not the ones where i'm IN Jaynes bunk, but the ones about firefly coming back), and generally wx poetic about our love of the BDM and series.
ANd in our fantasies, the series will come back. And i think if we DO hand in ther long enough, our fantaises wil lcome true. maybe not a quickly as we would like, but it will come.

I have to wonder if Joss himself is losing hope for the series, or has been burned too many times to go back. I'm hoping that isn't the case. A thought just occured to me, with all this letter writing to CW and all. Maybe it would be nice to write Joss a handwritten letter to let him know we are all behind him and that we have his support. Also letting him know that every day there are more and more Browncoats and anyone who sees the show falls in love.

I think he needs a bit of encouragement and inspiration from fans. There are some awesome and inspiring conversion stories out there and maybe if he heard some of them it would at least lift his spirits and hope. Well that's just my thinking. If anyone can track down an adress for me to send fan mail let me know. Thanks!

I think you are on to something. We have all been touched by the sound in Joss' interviews and posts of being tired , a little depressed that it didn't go better and well, it makes us blue too. And we know what that feeling is because we all have had it, or get it from time to time. I know I do, I get very low about waiting. So... I think your idea is brilliant.
Over on the letter writing thread is Joss' address... or the agency or something. Let's spread this around the board folks, I think we should write Joss and make him understand that we still want more and we're still here and we're growing!

The creative people who make good TV and movies have really got to come up with a business model that allows the to continue to do so while cutting out the bloated overhead of the "traditional" big-media model. There's got to be a way to produce this stuff and deliver it to the audience in a way that cuts out the need for all the parasites and middle men.

One of Serenity's problems was that so many people did not even hear about it and if they did they did not know any of the actors or the director.

This may soon change.

Remember Nathan has a new movie coming out Slither March 31 USA

Nathan's next movie after that Waitress is in post-produciton.

Nathan's next movie after that White Noise 2: The Light is either filming now or almost filming.

Remember Joss is going to be doing two movies Wonder Woman and Goners.

So we may soon have a bunch more Firefly/Serenity fans because of the above.

Look on the bright side. 3 million people use the London Underground every day, including at least two million commuters and schoolchildren, half of whom seem to read (free) copies, which tend to get recycled from person to person too. Metro is distributed in other cities too (over a million copies all told). This is publicity. The more publicity the better. If even one or two people reading that interview see Serenity or Firefly in their local DVD shop and pick it up when they wouldn't ordinarily have picked it up, just because they've seen it mentioned in the paper, that's progress in the direction we all want.
