Ok, I'm no expert, but I did learn a few tricks trying to help bentor78 promote his midnight showing of Serenity back in February. Despite the massive snowstorm in our area (2 feet near me), he STILL had a decent showing.

So, my little tips on how to advertise your local shindigs or movie showings for the non-brownish-coated bystanders:

1) Post flyers around your local colleges and universities. Much as they pretend to be poor, college kids DO have cash to hit theaters and the time to go. They also love things that are not mainstream...like us and our little 'verse.

2) Post flyers in your local supermarket. There's always those advertisements saying "Make thousands of dollars right from your home." Add in a Serenity or Firefly one there too!

3) E-mail your local radion stations and television stations. It does work! Ben said he got people showing up at the door days beforehand asking for advance tickets saying they heard his showing mentioned on the radio.

4) While on those websites, check to see if they have a Community Calendar. (this can work for newspapers too!) Add in your local shindig. People looking for a quick fix for some weekend fun may see it and just be interested enough to come.

5) Write a letter to your local paper or even the nearest city paper and ask them to do a feature story on your shindig. Some papers and television stations love to do spots on the local color, and since we're not usually an unduly rowdy group we're still interesting enough for someone to take notice.

6) Advertise in comic book or hobby stores. You know they'll be kindred spirits. I've seen numerous advertisements in my local comic store for people looking to join in a role play group, this can work for us too. Serenity's a role play game. They'll be people there interested in coming.

Local shindigs are GREAT, but we need to get the word out. Advertise. We don't have millions of dollars to spend on it nor do we have oodles of hours to spend running around, so remember to delegate some of these around to your fellow Browncoats.

It isn't hard, just time consuming. But if everyone does a little, then the people they brought along did a little, it'll grow.

We CAN do this!
