THEPISTONENGINE

I've come across several posts in my short time here on the forum that are rude and carelessly belittle other people. Most of these seem unintentional, others seem contrived to simply piss people off. I have, on a couple of occaisons, called people on their posts. I now make a more generic plea.

I'm not saying do not thoroughly and rigorously debate issues and ideas. That's what forums are for, the free flow of ideas subject to cross-examination. What I am asking is that people think before they post, that, when they make a quick quip or joke, look at the spirit of the thread and judge how it will be received. We should double check our posts. If we poke fun at someone, what is the language? Are we being funny or condescending?

Examples
Harmless fun: "Oh come on, surely you knew that!"
Condescending: "Jeez, did I really have to explain it step-by-step?"

Harmless fun: "We all know Wiccans are a little screwy, they scare me! /me runs and hides!"
Condescending: "Wiccan belief is HIlarious, I laugh at it."

Harmless fun: "Damn you Asarian, why you always gotta knife in and steal the hangman quote?"
Condescending: "What the hell? You think you can not guess any letters and then take the grand prize?"
(I'm still feeling some hangman rivalry, Asarian. Got you in my sights.)

I don't ask people to respect the feelings of others here. If you can't take an insult, then grow some skin. I ask people to mind themselves, to talk in adult manner when the mood is appropriate, and to have fun when fun is called for. This isn't about wondering if the other person is going to be drastically hurt by your comments, you can't live your life or mind your posts wondering who might take it the wrong way. Anyone whose seen some of my comments will know I pull no punches. This is about common sense, about not being arrogant and egotistical to the point of believing that you can say what ever you want and not feel reprecussions from the community when they say you're out of line.

It never hurts to throw in a smiley to let those know you're joking.

I'm sure that some people will think that this post is irresponsible, that I'm making a big deal either for the misconduct of a few, or I'm being oversensitive and rash. I realize these opinions, and others, possibly exist before I post. I take responsibility for creating the feelings that this post is inappropriate, but I also am willing to argue my case that it is. While neither side may be willing to come to a consensus, at least there is a valid exchange of ideas. (Note: Exchange of ideas != accepting what others think as fact). Nor do I apologize for my post. I have apologized before for invalid implications I have made, and am prepared to do so again. But if I am truly sorry to offend anyone by my post, I would never post in the first place.

I feel everyone should follow that example. I summarize:

1) Be aware of what you're saying and the tone.
2) Accept responsibility
3) Realize everything you say is subject to disagreement.
4) Don't post something you feel you will have to apologize for. Apologies are made for mistakes, misinterpretations, and unwarranted comments. If you feel in advance an apology is in order, there is something wrong with the post in the first place.
5) Be ready to apologize when you are faced with the fact that you are plain wrong.
6) When the subject matter is serious, be prepared to back up your assertions. If it's purely opinion related, be ready to back up assertions, or, at the very least, acknowledge your ideas are incomplete and intuitive.
7) When losing your temper, keep your intellect intact. There is plenty of time, when typing, to think about exactly what your saying.

Good night all.
Tristen

This seems to be on a lot of people's minds lately. I just wrote a blog about this, and I know that there is at least 1 thread that brought up the same thing (about a week or so ago).

Basically, I agree and those are certainly good guidelines for posting.

Hopefully people will mind them (at those that don't already). It only takes a few to ruin it for everyone after all.

In my mind that really isn't the point. I think what TPE is saying is things have started to get out of hand, so we should start to reel it in.

Who cares who said it? It has become a problem, and we should address it.

Hell, if TPE pulls anything that you don't like, just reference this thread. Or just don't talk to him. It's just that simple.

Could I suggest that the moderator do more deleting of questionable threads? Maybe (and I understand that its a BIG maybe,) if the thread disappears then the poster will get the hint that they were out of line with their comments. I have read several threads in this last week that I found disturbing,....and wondered why they were left for others to read. There will always be people on the board that are unaware of how rude the're being,...they think they are so clever...the last time I checked it wasn't about being clever,...it's about be friendly and open to discussion. This very reason is why I don't post much,...I don't want to insult any one, or hurt their feelings.

That's just MHO....Thank You for letting me express it

To modify this a little bit. How about provide a lock for the threads. That way a moderator can make a post regarding why the thread was locked and then lock it. The thread would then serve as an example of what not to do as well as an example that they are starting to crack down on disrespectful people.

Maybe so. I know I've touched a few nerves, and I don't apologize for that. I know I've been especially harsh in the adjacent thread on Wiccans, and down right insulting. But, however, I do feel I've followed the principles I asked of others:

1) I am fully aware of what I am saying.
2) I accept the responsibility of my words, and that they have consequences.
3) I realized the potential for disagreement (It doesn't have to be explicitly stated, but I did so anyways)
4) I never apologized in advance for something, I was fully sincere in everything I said.
5) I have, in previous threads, apologized for misinterpretations and misrepresentations of others comments. I too make mistakes.
6) I have backed up what I have said. You may disagree with my reasoning, but I think you'll find it is quite extensive.
7) And, in the many cases I've lost my temper, I've still responded with logical arguments. True, my comments in the adjacent thread are quickly becoming snide, but there is still much logic behind the angry and insulting remarks.

So, perhaps I'm not so much of a hypocrite.

I honestly don't see any reason to "reel it in", but then, I'm not as active on this board as others. See, me and another guy got into a very very small thing which was eventually perceived as me "picking" on him. As of yet I had not said anything directly insulting to the indevidual, but then someone comes along and starts hurling insults and names at me. Now, this COULD have turned ugly, but I chose just not to respond to him, as the original exchange was specifically between myself and the first guy, who himself had seemingly chose not to respond to me.

See, in my opinion, the person who comes on here and says "I hate black people" is not the problem. It's the 189 people who respond "Ur a racist cunt fuck you u r gay!" that are the problem. I don't see any reason why a person's opinion shouldn't be their freedom to express as long as it's not directly insulting, ex, "You're a shithead".

Why do we need a post encouraging people to do what they've been doing already, especially from someone who's not doing it? Although I've certainly paid for it in the past, I generally try and assume that all people I meet are capable of managing themselves.

Well to be truthful, I don't know if it's possible here. But, it certainly could be programed in fairly easily if needed if it hasn't been already. Just mentioned it because I've seen it done elsewhere.

I remember a few months back someone (won't say who) here completely freaked out. That thread was a mess.

It was quietly handled by a mod. Not sure what exactly happened, but I haven't seen that person much (or at all) since then.

In all my two years here, that is the /only/ time that its happened. At least that I know of. So, I really think that people here are a different sort.

That being said... Crap, I'm starting to get too tired to be able to form my thoughts properly.

Sorry, the rest of the post will have to wait *sigh* I'm getting old

Personally I think that all the parties that you listed are the problem.

IMO people should respond to the trolls. But as seen with BB in the Wiccan thread, people are not just leaving it alone. So, the way I see it, people are not doing what they should. Thus the post encouraging them to do something.

Crap. I thought I got another wind and there it sets in again...

See you all tomorow.

Uh-huh, I pulled a stupid and confused you for someone else because your posts were right next to his and the incident in question happened a few weeks back, either before my surgery or while I was on heavy pain killers.

I hope you'll accept my apology and leave it at me being a dumbass, and you being a spiffy gentleman with a very fine hat.

See, now that was well placed humor. Either that or I'm really tired. Anyways, I'd say no apology needed, but that'd contradict what I already said.
We all have our dumbass moments. As I said before I've had to restate myself twice already in the aformentioned thread because I misrepresented what someone else actually said.
And for the record, I hate !HOOAH MOTHERF*CKERS! Go Navy, Beat Army.

EDIT--BTW, why would you ever need to piss in a canteen?

For the racord, I think Wiccans are douchebags, and I hate goths for stealing the color black. That color belongs to rough and tumble manly men like Johnny Cash, not pasty white freaks with whip fettishes.

Again, nothing directly insulting.

I think the interservice rivalry is tongue-in-cheek.
I actually find it kinna amusing.

Anywho, I wish that the locking of some threads that get out of hand wasn't necessary, as it's almost invariably the result of one person who can do nothing but egg other people on. KF

I'm with TPE on this one.

Yes, I rarely agree with his opinions and sometimes find them rude and insulting, but I don't dive in and behave rudely or in an insulting manner right back.

There's nothing wrong with accepting everyone on this board as part of our Browncoat family and treating them with respect and courtesy, even if sometimes they don't have the courage to do the same.

Insults just create more insults. And adults or not (we have quite a few younger members, yo) we all should have learned basic courtesy in kindergarten and know how to apply that in social circumstances.
