Aaron, the Carnivale recapper over at Television Without Pity dropped this gem near the end of the pilot ep recap:

Quote:

After an interminably long stroll, Clancy suddenly finds himself in front of a house of ill repute, and he looks upward to see the same Mr. Chin's sign that appeared in his dream. He's solicited by an Asian prostitute as he stares at the sign, but when he grabs her arm to push her away she snarls at him in Chinese ("Can you believe they're actually making a Firefly movie?") and runs off. And then as Clancy stands there, bathed in the red neon light, it suddenly begins to snow. Within seconds, the street is covered (if by "covered" you mean "rendered in CGI"), and he finds himself standing alone in the center of the storm. The snow is then replaced by a rain of blood, and Clancy raises his arms and does a passable imitation of Tim Robbins at the end of Shawshank Redemption.

Perhaps not the nicest thing ever written, but the word is out and that's all kinds of nice. And I think he's cool for doing it as a parenthetical reference just like Shack used to do for actual Firefly recaps.

And if you get a chance to watch Carnivale, go for it-- very good, very spooky, and so much visual imagery and symbolism that you're occupied for hours or days wondering what each line and shot really means.

Yeah! I *love* that show! Since Firefly got axed, it's the only thing my wife and I watch together!

(It's got that same "watch with the lights off" magic I remember feeling when The X-Files was in its heyday.

...and the music? It's good and fiddley. Two different sources of musical inspiration, but it's hard to not think of Firefly during scene interludes...

I was going to post a Carnivale thread today, and behold, here it is.

I am so hooked on this program, it's pathetic.

And Time-Warner In-demand isn't helping.

When my roommate comes in, I change the channel and pretend I'm watching whatever's on SciFi.

Nick Stahl is so talented, it's just a joy to watch him in this role.

I can only wonder where he will take us.

The art direction and music is shiny shiny shiny.

AND THANK GOD IT'S ON HBO AND NOT FOX!!!!

Y E A H H H H!!!

It's SAFE!!!!

For a Firefly fan, Carnivale is a highly enjoyable diversion while we wait for the Big Day.

PS, I agree, the Chinese cursing really took me to Serenity!

Carnivale is the kind of complex, character-driven show I crave. And everytime I watch it, I think about how a network would NEVER air a show this cool.

I'm also enjoying the series (2 episodes so far). It reminds me of a few that got canned last year (Firefly and Miracles). Knowing HBO it won't be pulled mid-season and if it does well enough there will definitely be more seasons.

Forgive me, but what is a "shout-out"? Was the parenthetical a translation of what was said, or was the reviewer just reminded of Firefly because of the chinese?

Thanks,

Pat.

The latter and more. Shack's old Firefly recaps used to include parenthetical translations of all the chinese phrases done deliberately incorrectly and played for laughs. It would be like something like, "Then Mal cursed in chinese (I said scattered, covered, smothered, and chunked, not scattered, covered, smothered and diced!) and nobody took their shirt off." Or something. So when Aaron recaps a different television show on a different network and uses the Firefly style Chinese translation, I think it indicates that Firefly's influence is broad and the show itself is/was well-liked.

Further, referencing the upcoming film rather than saying something like "Those Firefly dorks bribed me to set you up for Brother Justin's horrendous revelation" indicates that the word is out. And it exposes that many more people, like 'what is this Firefly we keep hearing so much about.'

And in general, a shout-out is a blatant reference to someone or something not present but appreciated. I'd like to give a shout out to... et cetera.

LOL!!!
I absolutely love Carnivale. God(dess) Bless HBO for they do rock, and mightily.
I also love TVWP. Their synopises (oh, dang...where's my dictionary?) are dangerous to read while drinking or eating.
