Has anybody listened to the commentary on the scene where Wash gets harpooned? Joss says "everybody laughs at this scene, its cute, its funny and its kinda sexy". Would anybody else use these words to describe the scene? I know I wouldnt, I was expecting a little more to be honest. I for one was really dissapointed to see Wash die as it also means that the story itself cannot go on in the same way, and has also died. Maybe Joss is being a little unclear, but when i watched Serenity at the cinema there was laughter as Wash began to say "I am a leaf on the wind..." then everything went silent as the harpoon struck. As for cute and sexy, am I the only one bewildered by these descriptions?

I believe he was joking. Joss tends to do that quite often.

Yes, Joss is famous for his deadpan wit. If he says "everybody laughs at this scene, its cute, its funny and its kinda sexy," he's noting how painful and controversial it was in his own funny sort of way. Joss can be so deadpan, it's sometimes hard to tell when he's actually serious, but he's definitely being very ironic in this instance.

Yeah, that was just Joss being Joss.

For another perspective on this scene you should read the commentary in the Visual Companion. In the interview at the front of the book, Joss makes a great comment about Alan asking him about the shorter length of his script.

Something along the lines of:

"Mine ends on page 105, but everyone else's seem longer."

"They're not, it's just a figment of your imagination."

Hi-larious!

I haven't listened to the commentary on the DVD yet, but I am sure, this is one of those grand moments of Joss being Joss, as Matt stated.

I am well aware of his dry wit but i just didnt get it in this instance. If he was joking then no offense to Joss, but it wasnt ironicaly funny and just rather disjointed.

You're mistaken. It was very funny.

I thought it was funny.

Diffrent strokes...

"I thoroughly disapprove of duels. If a man should challenge me, I would take him kindly and forgivingly by the hand and lead him to a quiet place and kill him."

Got to say that I also got that Joss was joking about the Wash death scene being funny. The way I see it is that Joss has probably spent a lot of time justifying Wash's death, and the commentary is his chance to not have to do that. We can tell from watching the scene that it is emotional and sad and heart wrenching without Joss having to tell us that it is.

When I think of an interesting signature you'll be the first to know.

I thought it was pretty amusing, I really liked the part about Tudyk talking about his script ending. I can so visualise that. Tudyk is a funny, funny man.
