Does anyone actually think that Early died (or eventually did) at the end of OiS? If ya think about it, theres that scene after he is kicked off Serenity, and after Mal and River go back inside, where Jubal's ship turns and rockets off to somewhere. I had always just assumed that River had set it for auto-pilot to some unknown place. BUT now I get to thinkin that maybe Mr.Early had something where he can call his ship to him. Hell, Boba Fett in Star Wars could pilot his ship all from inside his helmet. Notice how Mal or anybody never says anything about Early's ship. Jubal's "well, here I am.." line seems very calm, and even though he wasn't the most sane character, I don't think anyone could be too comfortable with drifting through space. Anyways, Just shootin out topics, feel free to shoot them down or let em fly!

I'm of the opinion, that unless you actually see the character die, and (s)he does so in such a fashion that medical attention could not fix it, then assume the character is still alive. Even then, that's not always a sure bet.

I doubt Early is dead at all, he probably has a mechanism to call his ship back, seems like that's be standard bounty hunter faire to me. Also, is it just me or is there something reflected in his helmet at the end there? Probably his ship.

Interesting how Mal tells Inara he doesn't think Early will survive long, attributing it to the small amount of air he has. I suppose this could be ignorance on Mal's part, just not thinking about what sort of technology Early has in that suit of his, or maybe Mal is trying to keep Inara from worrying? Oh well.

I thought about this at the time, but didn't really think Early was alive till you suggested it. I went and looked at that secene at the very end with Early floating around, and danged if you ain't right. There IS something refelcted in his helmet. And that something is very close to him. My copy is very very low quality, so I could only see that is was definitely something, and it was within a few hundred meters. Did you notice that when he says his line out there, that he is looking right in the direction of the reflected item?

Good point, but was the relection a reflection of his own ship or someone else's? Alliance, perhaps?

Good point yourself DeSangro. Early probably isn't the only one who's been pursuing Serenity. If he got picked up by the Blue Hands though, they'd probably kill him because he conversed with River, just like the feds in Ariel.

It seemed to me that Jubal went one way and the ship went the other way. If Jubal had been bringing the ship back to him, I would think that Mal or River would have said something or Wash would have seen it on radar and said something.

I think River sent it to parts unknown. I don't know where she got the knowledge to pilot his ship, maybe she just punched in some numbers and let it fly. Maybe she picked up the knowledge from reading Jubals mind. If she did, then she would have known if he could call the ship.

Did anyone see any controls in his helmet or suit that looked like he could control his ship?

If there is a reflection on Jubals helmet, I bet it's the Serenity.

JMHO: I'm thinking he's dead but I'd love to be wrong and see him in the movie.

another good point there. I had never given the reflection thing a second thought before. Oh dang, guess I'll just have to watch the episode again! Now here's a different reason for Early to still be alive, and it's purely cosmetic. It'd be a damn shame to put the time into makin that red leather suit to have it only be in one episode...

Ain't it though. I re-viewed OIS because of this thread. Man did I miss a lot the first few times. There is defintiely a reflection in his helment, it looks like Serenity but it's coming at him.

When I first watched the ep I thought, "Yep, here I am." was one of his philisophical quips. But, now I'm wondering if he's not having a conversation with someone in an approaching ship. His ship looked a little small, may be he uses it as some sort of shuttle and has Firefly of his own.
