One obvious similarity is that the Union/Alliance had a far greater industrial base and population than the Confederacy/Independents and this was likely a primary cause of the eventual victory of the Core Worlds.

Amateurs talk tactics, professionals talk logistics as they say.

The Independents (Confederates) had better generals.

This comes from two views. One is the view of the Alliance versus the Independents we get in the series. The Alliance consistently comes off as very massive and inefficient, least when it comes to dealing with the Rim and Border. The Independents came off as being able to handle being outnumbered and outgunned--how long did they hold Serenity Valley, after all? Even though they lost, they likely had superior leadership--or, that's the perspective we get from Firefly.

The second view is that of the US Civil War. Lincoln had to fire several generals (forget the exact number) before finally finding Grant. The Confederates had folks like Robert E. Lee and Nathan Bedford Forrest from the get-go. Now, they might've been deficient when it came to supplies and manpower, but tactics wasn't their weak point. KF

Lord, I'm walking your way. Let me in, for my feet are sore, my clothes are ragged.
Look in my eyes, Lord, and my sins will play out on them as on a screen. Read them all.
Forgive what you can and send me on my path. I will walk on until you bid me rest.
