*walks back towards his bunk with bag full of freshly washed and dried clothes*

*walks past galley ands sees Jack smokin' one of his cigars and waves to him*

*opens bunk hatch, drops bag into bunk and closes hatch*

*walks into galley and aks Jack for a cigar*

*Jack hands him one and Pain lights it with his lighter, puffs out a couple of smoke plumes and sits in a chair across from Jack*

So Jack how's the leg? Probably hurts a lil' more after all that bucking Serenity gave us huh?

*limps into galley not realizing he just missed FollowMal*

*with his cigar clamped between his teeth, hi eyes grow wide as he opens the fridge and spies Fly's tomatoes*

*quickly and quietly fixes himself a plate, pours himself an old mason jar full of last night's remaining brandy, and heads back toward the wounded Mule...cleverly balancing his treasure while holding his cane*

*stops just long enough to drop the cat some tuna bits*

*leaves for the Cargo Bay...trailed by cigar smoke*

We will hold...we hold till Mal gets back.

(Sorry Pain caught me mid post)

*returns to table to eat his meal*

Leg don't hurt that much Doc. Thanks for asking.

As for the bucking Serenity gave us a few hours back...well, lets just say I not a big fan of the secondary gravity buffer panel.

But Rocket assured me everything was okay.

*pushes the brandy bottle across the table to Pain*

*motions toward Pain's arm*

How's that feeling?

We will hold...we hold till Mal gets back.

*slowly opens one eye then t'other. no kitty on lap so has a luxuriant strech in the chair. Once she's sure that every muscle has had it's stretch, she slowly brings it all back in together and gets up and peeks into the galley*

Anyone here?? Mal? Jack? Pain? Y'all better have left some tomatoes for Fly of she'll have your hides!

*peeks in to the firdge and see's there are still tomatoes...grabs some for herself and stuffs them into her mouth, oil dribbling down chin onto t-shirt*
mmmmmmmmmmmm, yummy! Now someone said sometin' earlier about some sourdough and partial wheel of cheese. *rummages in fridge, finds the sourdough starter. Whips together the bread and puts it in the oven. Dives back into fridge and puts sopme tomatoes aside for Fly, knowin' damn well that threats of a hidin' won't be enough to stop 'em from eating all the tomatoes. Wanders into the cargo bay and takes a seat beside Radar*
So, what's jack up to?? been talking to his lady again?

I'll be in Jaynes bunk

*grabs bottle and pours some into his mug that was still on the table*

*slides bottle back to Jack*

*takes a sip of the brandy*

It hurts some but after couple of servings of that brandy I won't be worryin' 'bout it much.

ROCKETJOCK

*RocketJock and Kaylee remain in the engine room; they have reassembled most of the gravity drive, but one access panel remains open as they track the power usage*

Huh. Yup, yer right Kaylee, there's the problem. Knew a simple recalibration shouldn't cause so much luh-suh trouble. But why would anyone route that much gravwave feed through the upper deck hub? Heckfire, should've shorted the whole system out the first week.

"Lessen there's something there to suck up all that juice...", she notes.

*Rocket and Kaylee exchange the "Oh! There's the forest!" look.*

Oh, futz.

*Rocket grabs a tool kit and dashes for the hatch while Kaylee desperately attempts to keep the grav feed steady.*

Need this out of the way now gents!

s'about time to turn I reckon Radar, for me anyhow. So i'll say goodnight.
Gets up from catwalk, walks through the galley on way to bunk*
g'night Jack, g'night Doc
*and collides with Rocket*
Whoa, didn't se ya there Rocket...hey where ya off to in such a hurry? (as Rockets barely acknowledges the collision as he hurries on his way)
*continue down into my bunk, thinking that maybe i should be strappin'myself in tonight*

ROCKETJOCK

*Rocketjock starts unbolting an access panel under the dinner table's former position*

Explainations in a minute gents; right now, someone needs to tell the bridge not to cut drive or do a hard burn until Kaylee tells 'em it's safe.

*Removes access panel, revealing a mess of gravwave conduit feeds, all jury-rigged to a roundish something-or-other about the size of a hubcap. The hubcap is glowing blue, and giving off an ominious hum. It's marked in odd lettering. Rocket pulls a microspanner from the tool kit, licks his lips, begins loosening connections, pauses, looks up at Jack and Doc.*

Now please? Dong Ma?

*takes a nervous drag on his cigar*

Pain you might want to do what Rocket says and run up to the bridge. I'd do it...but it would take me a week to get there.

*lurches over to the kitchen and grabs a hand lamp and shines it down in the access opening*

Depends. Do you think it's a slow-motion leech that's been draining our gravwave feed one erg at a time ever since Mal got us that overhaul with the Lassiter money? *(Whistles low)* Check out that Cherenkov glow. This puppy's just about one more major drive usage away from exploding.

*Rocket nods.* That is essentually it.

*Kaylee enters, hands full of assorted tools.*

"'Cept it wouldn't explode so much as implode."

*Hunkers on the deck next to Rocket, examines "hubcap", bites lower lip.*

"If we can reverse the feed, we can drain it all back into the fuel cells."

*Smiles like sunlight.*

*RocketJock nods.*

First the ship bucks like she's about to blow and now I here somethin' about a glowin' hubcap thing in the galley floor. Care to explain?

Well Cap'n, judging by the fact that this thing is marked in Old Russian, I'd guess it was manufactured in Georgia System -- which would point a finger at your old buddy Niska.

*Kaylee makes one last adjustment; the blue glow lessens, and the ominous hum becomes markedly less ominous.*

*Kaylee wipes sweat off her forehead.

"Serenity's been kinda itchy around the grav systems lately," she says; "That's why we were doing early maintenance."

*Examines the leech delightedly, as if it were a cute little puppy.*

Nice piece of engineering. Well, fer something that was intended to suck us all into a teeny-tiny black hole, that is."

*Rocket sighs from deep, deep down..*

Gentlemen, is there any of that brandy left? Or anything else dangerously alcoholic?

Guess I should be gettin back to the Infirmary for some antibiotics and some shut-eye. Miss Kaylee if you wouldn't mind, would you help me down there...I seem to have misplaced my cane.

*leans on Kaylee as they shuffle off toward the Infirmary*

*Jack turns back and winks at Rocket, Mal, and Pain*

Night fellas.

*Jack's last statement fades off as the two depart*

LOL LOL LOL.

Oh, Sweet Baby Buddha!

Dropping out of character here for a minute.

Genties and Laddlemen of the audio radiance, thank you so much for aiding and abetting me in my little act of improv-slash-thread-hijacking. I'd never intended for this little storyline to last so long into the evening, but the web site's shut down caught me half-way through my plot.

For the record, if tomorrow's thread (and I do hope there is one) contains anything but rest and recreation, it won't be my fault.

(Although somebody has to get to work on forging those receipts...)

Back into character now, to close up (literally):

*The leach fully drained, Rocket disconnects it, re-connects the grav-plumbing back into its proper configuration, replaces the access panel, and attempts to drag the table back into place. As before, it doesn't budge. He shrugs, pulls a chair to the table instead, and takes a major pull on the brandy bottle.*

Long day, good ending. We're still flying. It'll do.

*One more swallow.*

It'll do.
