Today I thought of Firefly when... by Channain

Channian, you beat me to the festival thingy! I went to the Malabar Historical Festival today. There were blue coats, guns, cowboys on horses, covered wagons, twangy music, and a lot of people were in time period costumes just as some country folks. At one point I found myself dancing a little gig with an old man to a fiddle player and it became my own little Triumph... well, minus the fake marriage and all the dust. It was great.

Kind of a tangent from the actual content of this thread (geez, and I flunked trig..[probably why I'm a psychologist...])

Buuut...

The other day, I heard the new song from Godsmack, entitled "Serenity" (I kid you not). It's an appealing fantasy that the band members would declare themselves ardent and evangelical Browncoats, and so expose millions of impressionable listeners to the wonder that is Firefly. But if wishes were horses...

Still, the music has a vaguely FF-twangy thing going on at points, and if you listen to the lyrics, you might even imaging Mal, lookin' out the viewports, thinking morose thoughts:

I got stuck with 5 rugrats the other night. Decided the best way to keep them occupied was video. So I popped in Robin Hood by Disney, not that

by Costner where the ultimate conflict is can Robin break a door down faster that the Sheriff can undo his drawers? Please! *shudder*

Anyway, The fox (just realized that said fox, sorry to put said animal in a bad light) Robin Hood is quite the shiny fellow, who runs with a gang of thieves and even have their own preacher Friar tuck. (although he's a badger which is just funny and ironical.

) And at one point in time Little John is making a lamp using fireflies. And says "Dance little fireflies, dance" Yep, call me Mr. Hopeless. Shiny

The past two months I have been working overtime programming a complicated piece of software which will, one day, go on the International Space Station (to control a camera we are putting up there). To keep from burning out, I have been following the advice of Agent Cooper of Twin Peaks (see sig below). Every day, once a day, (around noon), I close the door to my office, get out my lunch, put on my headphones, and enter the Firefly universe by watching one of the episodes on my computer. Today it was "Out of Gas" which seemed appropriate...

The whole Robin Hood legend still holds a special place in my heart, which is why I have such a thing for Firefly. Mal can say what he wants, but much as he'd like to rob from the rich and keep it, we all know he'd give to the poor if he had a mind to.

Disney's Robin Hood is still an all time favorite. In fact I had the vinyl soundtrack album and played so much I'm pretty sure I wore it out.

I actually thought of Firefly last night, when Nathan Fillion and I met for a romantic picnic after dark...he is gorgeous and he smelled so good. And it got downright dirty after that, sweaty, nasty and every ounce of XXX....SOOOO, I would say that I thought of Firefly in the early morning hours of today and then proceeded to touch my...WHOA...(Too Much Information!!!)

That would be (drum roll) Phil Harris in the part of Little John who coincidentally was also a bear, just as big as Baloo, but a different color.

Wow! it's amazing how much life filtered through Shiny glasses looks. Sometime we should do a thread on the whole Robin Hood / Firefly similarities stuff.

Shiny! I was a HUGE "Robin of Sherwood" fan in high school and college, and I think one of the first times I went to Bristol in Wisconsin was the year scenario did the Robin Hood play (which, after years and years of pirates versus Coke's cgaurds, they brought back this year, just in time for "Pirates of the Caribbean" to be a smash hit, because Ron Scott Fry and REC are just. that. smart.)

Which show were you at, by the bye? Michigan, Ohio, or MNRenfest?

MMRenfest, although I haven't seen that show in awhile. I saw Robin of Sherwood in high school too, and of course I own the Errol Flynn classic. Kevin Kostner's was so-so. Not one of Morgan Freeman's wisest choices, but the costumes were good. Also own two books of the legends - one from my parents and one children's version because the artwork was so good.

I used to go up to MN Renfest over Labor Day week-end, to hang out with my friend the Fabulous Lorraine, who i think is still performing up there (she's a singer/fiddler). Haven't been up in ages and ages, tho :(

RoS was my first real fandom--I did 'zines and cons and everything. I so need that series on DVD. I know it's out in the UK (my friend Abbie worked on the DVDs, doing interviews and segment producing) but I haven't seen Region 1 versions available yet... Hawkmoth (Dangermom) was a RoS fan as well, tho I met her later, in Disney's Gargoyles fandom...

You may know about this already, but there's a site called MRF Friends where the Festies keep in touch. You can get on a list service with them and start trading e-mails with the performers, artists, staff--just about anybody.

Although I've been a Trekkie for eons (spelling intentional), Beauty and the Beast was my first real fandom. I even helped run the 1997 convention here in Minneapolis. Yup, me and two other people. Wouldn't do that again if someone paid me. Now I just stick to running one art show for one convention.

I have the pilot episode of RoS on video. I have the entire series on VHS too, however despite claims to the contrary from the so-and-so I bought it from at a gorram Creation convention, I believe it's formatted for British systems and I've never gotten it to run. I keep it though, on the outside chance I find someone who can help me.

It's "if we weren't so down", instead of "were". Changes the meaning a little, but I can see how it definitely applies to places like Canton. Thanks, Mainiac. I copied these lyrics directly from a Web site that also featured the cast names, lyrics, some pictures and such. Ever since then, I've been running that line through my head thinking, "It should be 'weren't'. Shouldn't it be 'if we weren't so down'," and wondering if I remembered it wrong all these years. Should have known better!!

I was listening to the Writer's Almanac with Garrisson Keillor on MPR this morning. He always recites a poem at the end. Today's was "The Proverbial Ballad" (don't be too impressed, I looked that up too), of which I only remember one line, which is actually the fragments of two lines that got stuck in my head:

"You can't...teach an old racoon Chinese."

It got me to wondering, at 6:10 in the blessed a.m. whether the terra-formed worlds would even have racoons that would grow too old to learn Chinese. Strange thoughts to have before one's eyes are even open.

last night on Angel, the necromancer Magnus Hainsley was played by Victor Raider-Wexler, who previously played the firehouse captain on Two Guys and A Girl. just couldn't take him seriously as a necromancer because he was such a doof on Two Guys and A Girl.
