I just watched the interview of Nathan Fillion at the Slither premiere that was posted in the News section and I was wondering. Is that how it should end?

I mean, at this point isn't the role of Malcolm Reynolds at the point where no one but Nathan Fillion could ever play him. Would he really need to die at the end? I mean Mal, by my opinion, I'm not sure about everyone elses that's why I'm posting; curiousity, has entered the ranks of Captain Kirk or Picard, or Luke Skywalker and, of course, Han Solo.

Personally, I see it ending this way. If the universe changes in dynamic by the Serenity's doing then I see the ship getting destroyed because at that point they'll be able to overcome the old saying of "once you're in Serenity you never leave." (sorry I'm not sure about the exact quote from that deleted scene) If the universe stays fundamentally the same then I see the crew just going back to living life and finding jobs and such which is what the series was about. Either way, I see Mal alone( on a rim world house porch or in the cargo hold of the ship or kitchen) picking up a guitar or something that resembles one and strumming the tune to the theme song from the series and then being joined by the rest of the crew. Mal then sings the words and fades to black.

Forgive that last paragraph of pipe dreaming but I wanted to get that out there before I was tempted to write another fanfic.

Anyways.

Does Mal have to die?

Let's hope people who make decisions get smarter

I don't think he "has" to die, but he's said he
*wants* to die at the end of the 3rd Big Damn Sequel. I think he said it believing Serenity won't end up carrying as many sequels as Star Trek, for example. I'd love to see him as a 65 y.o. Mal in
"Serenity ~Wrath of Niska's Clone", but...

"Adalaiiiiiiiiii!!!"

======
anyway -he's too pretty to die, remember? ;]
EDIT: Oh, p.s. -for some of us it will never really end...(who? me obsessed? pfft)

HOEPERATIVE

I reckon we're a long way off the finale yet. Even if the story is never actually continued, there's SO MUCH narrative yet to be told.

I mean, character-wise, we need to uncover Book's past (posthumously), let Zoe mourn properly, Bring Mal and Inara together, watch River get better and see what other secrets she's hiding, see how Simon and Kaylee's relationship progresses, figure out what exactly Inara is running from...

And on the bigger scale- for all we know, the 'verse is on the verge of a second civil war! Riots on Osiris, terrorist attacks throughout the central planets, Persephone declares independence, smugglers operate on both sides running arms and supplies past the borders, parliament dissolves and is replaced by a supreme dictator who may or may not bear a passing resemblance to a character we all remember from the series/movie...

There's enough material in the 'verse for a hundred spin-offs, that's the fact of it.

Does Mal have to die?

Ok, yes, Mal has entered the ranks of those characters as SciFi "legend" and also no one else can play Mal but Nathan Fillion. IMHO. And I also have to add as an aside, that I would be prepared to not watch a Firefly without Nathan as Mal, that's how strongly I feel about it. (Let me clarify that by saying... I MIGHT be able to watch a totally different ship and a totally different crew, if it was written well enough.. I don't know. But I could not have any of these characters on the good ship Serenity replaced by another actor. Nuff said.)

Ok, general consensus in my Browncoat house is ...NO! to the question of Mal dying. Did Capt. Picard die, did Indiana Jones die, or Han Solo or Luke Skywalker?

First off, Mal's just too pretty to die. Second, although no one else CAN be Mal, it isn't necessary for him to die or for us to even know the total end. There doesn't have to be an end to the 'verse. It goes on... all the time.. we just don't currently know what is going on there.
But we will.... Joss will write it and we will live it and all will be well. I trust Joss.

If Joss and Nathan want to show us Mal sitting on a porch overlooking a ranch... then I'll be content to see it. If Mal dies by Joss' hand, then I'll try to come to terms with it, but I, my ownself don't think that is what will happen.

I can see Mal as a grandfather, kind of crippled up from all his war wounds sneaking up on him, but still cranky as ever, living on a ranch somewhere with his daughter and her husband and their kids, enjoying the heck out of his grey years but never letting anybody know how pleased he is to be settled down with those young ones coming around to hear his war stories and reminiscences.

Oops, I think I just described a character in "Wolves of the Calla." Oh well, it fits.

I think the key is that Buffy didn't die (okay, she did, repeatedly but came back), Angel didn't die (all right, he did, repeatedly, but came back) so I think that Joss doesn't want Mal to die (fair dos, he did but he came back).

I think the ship could/should be destroyed at the end of the third one (hey, worked for Star Trek) but our captain? Nah. But it is nice they're still talking about what might happen in sequels.

As I read your post, an image of Dustin Hoffman in A Man Called Horse popped into my mind. Picture a very old Mal, much as you described, on a porch, telling his grandkids/greatgrandkids of the glorious ( and not so glorious tales ) from his days out on the edge.

OK, not the most original concept, but always open for a dramatic twist at the end, which goes very bad or very good for Mal.

People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss
