Hey, I got a new idea...

Picture if you will, a gathering of browncoats (that is to say, US). Add to that a smattering of fireflies floating around and about. The crew is with us - Mal, Zoe, Book, everybody. Now imagine Serenity sitting on top of a hill, ready fire up and take us away from all this.

This is a T-shirt idea that recently blossomed in the Tagline thanks to Sarahetc, Maniac, StillShiny and Maguinan. The detail work is in progress.

IF YOU have a suggestion or an interest in purchasing "Glow Fireflies...Glow" please post it here or send me an e-mail. The sketch will appear on my artist page - same one as the Firefly Artwork series.

NOVEMBER UPDATE: Contrary to what ya'll might be thinking about now, this has not fallen by the wayside - somebody is actually paying me to draw for them (I've upgraded to not-so-starving artist) and I need to produce the first of four pieces. I promise this will happen, just not as quickly as I hoped.

Meantime, if anyone wants to actually appear on the shirt, send me a picture and I'll see what I can do.

Oh, YES! I would happily pay and wear that proudly. I can't seem to get to any shindigs so I don't have any Shindig shirts. This site is my Verse away from home. I could email you a dig pic or two I assume you mostly need headshots. Please, Please make this work. I've seen so many good ideas started here, that just fell by the wayside. I will halp in anyway I can.

Oh wow, you could use the Glow Little Fireflies Glow in a Firefly type font on the back. I want I want. Please keep me "posted" I'll be away from my desk for the next few weeks but I'll check in at home when I can. Gorram 56K!!!

That brings up a question - does anyone have access to a Firefly type font or dare I ask, the actual Firefly font?

I already have a local T-shirt company in mind. They did some T-shirt work for the sci-fi convention I'm enslaved to, three of which were from my designs.

I did find a place where someone made a firefly font and put it up for your downloading pleasure. Thing is, its the old style, the style that was dropped before the series started. I dont think it would suit well.

I know several people have said that they've used Nuptial font for Firefly style lettering. It doesn't seem to be free at first but. Just but. I'll see what I might could do to liberate it.

And to me, since I got the quote wrong to begin with, it'd be fun to have "Firefly" on the front and "Glow, babies. Glow!" on the back with some fff stuff, should Haken give us his blessing. Or even just the url.

You are a great artist and this is a great idea and not "chick art" in any way.

All I am suggesting is that the words "Glow Little Fireflies...Glow" on a t-shirt sounds feminine.

I love t-shirt contention. It's hard to please everyone, isn't it? I just had an epiphany. Imagine the end of a Firefly story in which some of the crew is stranded on a planet, at night, in a very muggy dark area. They need to be found by Serenity right away, but there is no way to signal them... no guns or fire implements, or any way to get the ship's attention. So, of course, they have to gather the only light source at hand, fireflies. In a semi-transparent material they collect them and are able to signal the ship. Now as the ship approaches, slightly illuminating the gloom, imagine the scene and see if you like the idea of making a picture from that. If you like, you can give it a more rough and tumble caption to please the mercenary in all of us.

it's a good point. I'm not a big fan of titles on T-shirts anyway. if the image can't convey a message, a wordy title isn't going to help. not to mention i hate messing with typefonts. let's just call it the working title - the image will remain the same.

or...how about Sarah's interpretation - "Glow Fireflies, glow!"

This is a new T-shirt idea that recently blossomed in the Tagline thanks to Sarahetc, Maniac, StillShiny and Maguinan. I'll be working up a preliminary sketch in the next week or two, This will be a line drawing (possibly white line on a dark background) so not a lot of detail is required - or at least not my usual level.

IF YOU have a suggestion or an interest in purchasing "Glow Little Fireflies...Glow" please post it here or send me an e-mail. The sketch will appear on my artist page soon - same one as the Firefly Artwork series.

Hey if you don't mind I'll try and out that together on photoshop. I have an idea similar to that which I might make as well. I'll probably have it done by the end of the week. As for the fonts. The font I used on the shirts was Blackadder (I believe) The closest I can find to the official Firefly title font is Nuptial Script and Lucia. However, I believe that the font was customized from one or both of those. If all goes well, I should have it done by next week since I should have some free time this weekend.

Alright... This is really starting to bug me...

Where is the line "Glow little fireflies... Glow" from?

The only thing I can think of is from the old Disney Robin Hood animation... where they do the big romantic scene with the waterfall, and they light up the area with fireflies...

..I'm such a nerd for remembering that so well...

I can remember the exact quote, so don't worry about it. It is from Disney's Robin Hood, but it's paraphrased from the beginning when Little John and Robin Hood are stealing from Prince John, dressed in drag posing as gypsies. Little John has a globe filled with fireflies hanging from a string tied to a stick. Prince John takes them as "floating spirits." but the quote came from Little John's encouragement to the fireflies as he put the globe into the carriage:

"Come on little fireflies...glow babies, glow."

So who's the nerd...huh?

Incidentally, a little less progress was made on the design than I intended last week due to my decision to get the latest Harry Potter book out of the way. Finished it in five days, so now I'm back on track.

There is a J. Mercer song recorded by the Mills Bros. in the '50s called "The Glow Worm" that begins with the line, "Glow Little Glow Worm, glimmer glimmer"... and ends several stanzas with the line, "Glow Little Glow Worm, Glow". It was quite a catchy tune and very popular way back then.

Contrary to what ya'll might be thinking, I haven't disappeared and I haven't forgotten my promise - I just oversimplified what it was going to take to do this. Plus the design didn't work for me as well as I thought, so It's changed a bit. Still the basic idea, only with Serenity perched on a hill a la "Safe" and us with the Firefies and the crew.

I've got two preliminary character sketches inspired by the Browncoat Chronicles. If you haven't appeared there yet, send me a physical description or a picture - whether it's your real face, or an avatar for your BC character makes no nevermind to me.
