OK, I was looking through my copy of the Serenity OVG, and was really blown away by the makeup effects for the Reavers. Then I started thinking (never a good sign...)

Reavers mutilate themselves to extreme degrees. They remove skin, and at least one photo shows a Reaver with his brain exposed (skin nailed back, skull cut through). They are, from what we've seen, constantly exposed to blood and other less savory stuff. How could they have existed with these wounds in this environment for twelve years and not succumbed to infections of some kind? Short-term I can see, but over twelve years seems unlikely.

I know the real reason is 'Because Joss said they could and it looks really cool', but I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas on it.

Maybe certain Reavers mutilate themselves to an even higher extreme, when they go on suicide missions,...like trying to take on the crew of Serenity. Mess with the best, die like the rest.

Perhaps the PAX also did something to their immunity systems?

I'll be in my bunk...

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Could be Rob150185 is right. Maybe the Pax supercharged their immune systems along w/ heightening their aggression.

If it was not the Pax then I can't imagine what the answer might be. Lots of hot showers & soap?

I think it's the radiation from flying without containment. That's bound to kill most, if not all infections. Of course it ain't too good for them either. I agree with Hotpoint's "Death or Glory/Wolf Pack/Here be Dragons/Horse Foot and Artillery" series in that they are probably sterile too because of the radiation. They probably wouldn't live much longer than 12 years even without infection anyway, 'cause they all probably have some weird ass form of cancer. Or, of course I could be dead wrong and should slap myself right now, who knows?

Maybe those really horrici mutilations are recent. Maybe they get worse and worse as time passes. Maybe they just haven't succumbed to various deadly environmental hazards yet... but they will. Isolate 'em for a few more years, and they'll all die out. But how to isolate them... hhmmmm....

So why do Reavers fly without core containment anyway? Obviously they intentionally do this to their ships. WTF?

Supposed to fly much faster without containment, so they can catch anybody they want to.

I'm guessing the Reivers aren't big on MOTs, and I'd be surprised if they were carrying anything like adequate insurance. Thoroughly irresponsible, the lot of them...

Radiation eats away at shielding materials, and without constant repair and replacement, the contaiment will eventually breach.

This phenomenon has dogged reactor design since the early 1950s and right up to the present day, when I just made it up.

I think the lack of containment was more the lack of general maintanaince than a deliberate act. What were missing here is the fact that the Reaver population doesn't necessarily stay static. In "Bushwacked" we see a Reaver in chrysllis (my spelling may be way off today b/c I'm sick, sorry) b/c he was exposed to all the horrors inflicted on other members of the crew. A quick head count makes it unlikely that the rest of the crew was left hanging from the ceiling. So where did the rest go? They were probably taken back to the Reavers ship for future rapin', skinnin', flesh eatin' and what'not. In the process, more of the crew would have been exposed to the abject cruelty of the acts and would have been driven to become Reavers themselves and would have been happily welcomed, given the funny hat and taught the secret handshake. Some evidence of this is given when the BDH's were sneaking through the Reaver fleet and we could hear the multivarious screams coming in through the radio. Thus, them'ens who died from over mutilation (as well as other natural causes. Being shot/stabbed/snacked on must count as natural causes for a Reaver) would have a stream of replacements. Like any other living organisms the Reavers would have been driven to reproduce. Remember, they were angry, not mad. Another thought to consider: all the Reavers I saw appeared male. Perhaps women prisoners are kept alive as breeding machines back in the fleet. A constant source of the next generation of Reavers, with the weak becoming snack boxes.

Hell. It's special. And filled with people with bad hygiene.
