My Fellow 'coats:

I have ever been and always will be a Browncoat. Joss gave it a name ('Browncoat') and some faces (our BDHs). As many others have already noted, the series gave voice to something primal that was an integral part of my emotional and intellectual nature. Love of family. A deep and abiding sense that Authority is frequently wrong, and that something needs to be addressed about that. A strong commitment to my fellow human beings and their right to live their lives in their own way ("Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness"), and to fight against cultural, economic and governmental forces that act to curtail those rights. The weird and wonderful relationship that is a committed marriage (Wash and Zoe). The intrinsic value of following a chivalrous path in life (Mal and Book)...

Firefly captured those core values of mine, and then affirmed them in the most complete way I've ever seen in any entertainment product. The fact that everyone here senses that power too, at least to some degree, makes us a community of kindred souls, not just fans.

20thCentFoxHater wrote, in part:

...If I were stranded on a desert island with nothing but Firefly and Serenity, I would be one happy fellow...

I'll go you one better: If I could get twenty more full seasons of Firefly streamed to me in weekly installments, I'd gladly volunteer to go that desert island. "A jug of wine, a loaf of bread, (new Firefly episodes until the day I kick) and thou", my Browncoat family, are all I require to make this place Heaven on Earth... (With apologies to Omar Khyyam.)

jaynesbunkwoman expressed some regrets about being long-winded. Baby, that's what this website is about: Freedom of expression and complete disclosure. Be as long-winded as you feel it's necessary to be, to get things off your chest. And "streak" to your heart's content, too. We're all happily naked, here...
(NB: meaning, 'spiritually unclothed', for those who might have misconstrued my poetic intent.)

Respectfully,

zoid

I'm new here. A browncoat seems to be a state of mind. I've only seen 4 episodes of Firefly, but so far I've seen enough to know that a browncoat does his own thing in his own time. A browncoat has a dislike of the government getting in his way.
I can't wait to see the other episodes of Firefly, and I have yet to see the movie.

This reminds me of the Signal and Firefly Talk podcasts... Early on they remarked that they would podcast until the movie was made. Then the movie got made and they said they's podcast until the sequal was made. etc. Personally, I hope they keep saying they'll continue podcasting for the next 25 years. In any event I'll die proudly as a Browncoat.

I've been a Browncoat since the very first episode I saw (the pilot). However, I was a little late to the party - as it was only last year (January 2005) that I saw it.

I went out and bought the DVDs the very next day.

I became aware of Firefly, after seeing the trailer for Serenity last summer, and then looking it up some more on the cortex.

Shortly after learning about Firefly, and watching a few episodes, I was forever hooked. I have seen each episode many times.

Subsequently, I have started watching Buffy and Angel, and am convinced that Joss is indeed a genius.

So, guess I became a browncoat early autumn 2005, and will forever stay that way...

Until the sudden but inevitable betrayal.

The remake with Tom Cruise as Jayne, Katie Holmes (or whoever it is that week) as Zoe, and the Scientologist reimagining that resurrects Book as Fat Johnny "Keep walkin' (like a ladies man), preacher" Travolta.

If you go to the Scientology site, it has a Church locator. It being computer related, I'm sure the boys and girls from the 48th at RAF Lakenheath could work up an interface with their targeting computers.

Other than that, I just have to echo Jayne, "I'm in."

Oh, jeez, not another one! Lord above, if anyone is as long-winded and convoluted as Zoid, I'm hangin' up my 'coat and movin' to Shortwindville.

Seriously, I've been Browncoated from minute 1 of episode 1. I remember the day in March-ish of 2003 when I was idly watching something I had taped that week. I was feeling too lazy to take the tape out of the VCR and decided out of curiousity to see what I had taped over. It turned out to be War Stories, right about the time Wash and Mal are being tortured. I FLEW up off the couch and looked around for someone to tell even though no one was home but me. I remember pointing at the TV and sputtering "LOOK!! LOOK!!" and scaring the dog. He seemed to be as happy as me, though, once I explained the situation. You have no idea how freaking HAPPY I was to have that little tiny piece of the 'verse. (Actually, all yous people probably do have an idea!) Anyway, I watched that damn tape many times before I heard that the DVD set was going to be released. Then I stopped until Christmas Day when I received the box set. I sat in the comfy recliner ALL DAY in my jammies and watched most of the set. I was never happier. (Is that sad?)

I am grateful I found this show, this site and that we got a movie. But I want more.

Crap. Now I'M the long-winded one! Zoid! I totally blame you!

Being a Browncoat has become an attitude, it may have started out as a fad, but as you can see it has grown!

Being a Browncoat, means so many things to so many people, but mostly if you call yourself a browncoat you probly have the same outlook as the crew of Firefly.

For me, being a Browncoat stands for freedom and the right to do what we want without big govt. It stands for doing whats right, even if you have to steal it. It stands for loyalty and love. It stands for never leaving someone behind. It means never having to say your sorry. It means spending alot of time in your bunk!

Peace~

Couldn't agree more. I have been a Browncoat even before I knew what one was and fell in love with Firefly the minute I first saw Serenity Part one. and even though I am only a recent addition to the noble ranks I will be a Browncoat till my last breath.

One of my close friends came to stay with me this week, she lives in PA and I'm in VT so its nice when she comes up. ANyway I have been telling her about Firefly for months now and finally she gets the chance to see my DVD's. We are up to Heart of Gold and when we finish the series I am playing Serenity for her. We may have another Browncoat in the making!

We have done the impossible and that makes us mighty!

I was a Browncoat from the first airing of "The Train Job", well before the term had even been coined and I'll die a Browncoat. Not because I'm a joiner, but because I've never had a television show touch me quite the way Firefly did.

Of course, I was "Touched by an Angel", but I showed the prosecutor where on the doll and now that angel is doing 10 years in Attica...

How long would one be a browncoat...good question. I think one needs to look at it from there own point of veiw. Personally, if the darn show did not have such unbeleivanble replay value...ie always something new seen, if you still laugh at the jokes, and if you are entertained everytime, will you ever stop being a browncoat? More importantly, I beleive being a browncoat is more than just being a fan of the show. The show, in its short run, created a since of longing for more that will never be fully realized at least by this poster. That hole in my soul, so to speak, is why I will always be a browncoat. If they had killed everybody off in Serenity, maybe I would be able to move on, however, since they did not, I will always keep my eyes on the horizon even if they do not make any future works until 2035, with Mal in a wheelchair hooked up to an IV.

Browncoat for life, not my fault, I blame the actors, writing/direction of Joss, the music, the lighting, the concept, and ironically FOX for this perdicament.

the best way to explain the fact that we are browncoats and that we will never change, is that we are a family here on this site! And tho we are from all across the world, and are all different in so many ways, becoming and being a browncoat means being a hero it means fighting the good fight, its about beliving in whats right and as long as we can talk about and watch firefly, then we have found Serenity! so remember "When you can't run anymore, you crawl, and when you can't do that... well, you know the rest"

Well, like with LOTR the biggest hype will die down after a while, but when you have something of such high quality that you really enjoy watching then I know this will always stay with me.

I still watch the old Star Wars films and the LOTR films, and will keep watching Firefly forever. I have now resulted to bying the DVD's for my friends birthdays to make sure the 'verse keeps expanding.

Being a Browncoat is more than just being a fan of the show/BDM, if that makes sense.

I've watched Star Trek for longer than I can remember, and I've been a fan of shows since. But being a Browncoat means more to me than just being a fan - it's a way of life. This is a real community, I'm relatively new and some people have been here since the beginning and yet we're all in this together.

So to answer the question...I'll be a browncoat to the end, and intend to have a Chinese style funeral with people in white instead of black.

Meggy, you are so right being a browncoat is a way of life, it's about attitude, loyalty, family, and fighting the good fight. Doing what you think is right despite the odds against you. On a slightly different note, was in a well known UK music/dvd store today and happened to see the box set of Firefly on sale. Burst out laughing when I saw that there's now a sticker on the front of the box advertising that it's

I'll wear a browncoat with dignity for the rest of my days.

No matter what Nathan, and the rest of our BDH's do; i think Firefly reaches out and grabs your substance with the depth of the 'verse and the abosolutely perfect click of characters that Joss put together.

Of course, I never got an *official* browncoat from FollowMal at any time. But I've been around a stretch, and saw every episode the night it aired. (Even if i did it record them and rushed back from the bars to watch each new episode!). And i let my loud mouth go off regularly around hereabouts.

Of course, life moves on. But im not letting my coat get dusty. I think Firefly was too cool for even FOX to kill. I'll be watching those same episodes for years and years.

Shortly after the hype of Serenity died down, after the adrenaline, elation, sorrow, and euphoria thinned out in my veins, I got back into the swing of 'normal' life. It was only the summer before, through blessed word of mouth, that Firefly was brought to me, and my friends and I sat and watched the DVDs religiously until we heard they were making a movie. That was easily one of the best year my life has ever seen, but the wave did dissipate, at least in character.

Sometimes I feel like I'm not as big of a fan as some people who seem to be able to talk about Firefly 24/7. Oddly enough, maybe, I kind of have a bit of admiration for those diehard Browncoats. I think maybe if I was surrounded by at least one other, Firefly might come up a bit more in my everyday life, but I'm getting that that's not a bad thing. Being a Browncoat isn't simply about being a fan.

A couple days ago, I broke out my copy of the DVDs once more. I hadn't watched them in about 6 months. I can't describe (and won't try, because I know you understand) the pure joy it was to find that I was still so moved by every moment in the episodes. Still laughing, still tearing up, still cheering. It was like coming home, opening the docking bay doors and hopping on the ship to go for a ride once more. Being a relatively new Browncoat, I have in brief moments worried that it had just been an above average phase in my life that would fade away. But now, after this, I realize that no matter how much time I spend living 'away' from it, I have Browncoat's blood in me. And really, I'm never away: The Browncoat's values, the creed of determination, loyalty, and fighting the good fight are with me everyday, even if I'm not thinking about Firefly.

I just wanted to voice my feelings of solidarity, and gratitude that this community exists for me to do so. I am the only Browncoat that I know of where I live, and I don't usually post in forums much. It's nice that this is here for when there's a real need for Firefly catharsis. Thank you. Xiexie so much ;)

Once you've been to Serenity, you never leave.

“When peace comes to mean the absence of conflict on the one hand, and when conflict with an unjust and racist political order is a moral imperative on the other, then it is not difficult to understand that the better class of human beings are, in fact, deeply committed to disturbing the peace and creating conflict.”

NEWMAL

Never knew I was a Browncoat until 2 months ago when I discovered this wonderful 'Verse. So much I identify with, right or wrong.

I missed Firefly's first run on Fox, going through painful divorce Fall of 2002. The recent previews of Serenity on pay per view peaked my curiosity, started the movie then stopped it because I HAD to go back and learn the history of these characters. Long story short, I now own the DVD's, the movie, the novel, the comic.

Call me crazy, but it just all was familiar. Mal lost his faith at Serenity Valley. My divorce was my Serenity Valley- the Angels never came and God was and remains silent. I too have learned that waiting for "help from on high is a long wait for a train don't come". I totally get Mal's anger at God.

Prior to discovering Firefly/Serenity, I thought the new Galactica was pretty good. I was blown away how Firefly was awesome right off the bat and never looked back. Great stories, great characters, great emotion. How can you not get a little choked up watching "Out of Gas" or "The Message"?

Eh, enough rambling. I volunteered for the Independent's late, but I'm here for the duration. I love the series, love the movie, and the fan dedication the got the movie made. Thank you Joss Whedon and everyone involved making the 'Verse a reality!! A Browncoat until I die ('course dying ain't exactly plan A)!

I'm just months behind ya agirlyman!
Though I do admit I also love Star Wars(4,5,&6) LOTR, and Buffy equally.
So I have to wear my Browncoat over my Star Wars T-shirt along with my Slayer charm bracelet and the One Ring on a chain around my neck.

What are we waitin' for?
