well, I tell ya, I have taken a hiatus from watching episodes so much.... before I was watching around 3 hrs of Firefly every night, with pauses for deep thoughts and drawing, so I had to take a break for a bit. I know you would understand had you done the same for a month.

Last night I was trolling on Kazaa for Trash and spotted lots of other Firefly vids. One, called "Goodies" includes shots of wardrobe, props, and A SCALE SIDE VIEW OF SERENITY!!!

It starts at the front and pans back to the hold area, and includes generic people for scale! I'll grab some vidcaps when I get home from work, unless someone else beats me to it!

That goodies vid is nice hun? The only problem with that shot of Serenity is that it was the early design and since then they've made changes to her. It still makes for a good picture, just keep in mind I don't think the dimensions are correct.

hey Browncoats, maniacnumbertwo here, numberone doesn't know I'm posting under his name, but I wanted to let you know that he started working on his blueprint again. I saw him working on it last night, finally. I think he was lying to y'all when he said he was starting again a few weeks ago. I will keep prodding him when I can.

Keep with the prodding numbertwo! I'll send Mr. Fluff along to bite his ears and lock him in a room till her works from time to time if you think it'll help.

Did this layout ever get finished and posted somewhere? I'm dying for a blueprint of Serenity!

Just thought I'd jump in and comment too, since I too would love to see an accurate blueprint!

First, the "mystery room" below the cockpit is an airlock--or at least includes one--and there's plenty of room for it in the hull. I get easily confused about this so correct me as needed... but my reasoning is as follows:

Look at the high-res 3D Serenity views (which I assume are accurate, plus they have no perspective distortion), as well as this pic from the half-done Serenity game map (UT) that includes a photo (top left) of the front hall interior: http://www.fireflyfans.net/firefly/gameproject.htm - Look at image 1 from 11/5/01. (The game model itself, on the right, is not accurate: it doesn't show the cockpit door being higher then the hall ceiling, which it is, and it shows the ceiling symmetrical with the walls, which it isn't. But I'd still buy UT to explore the map and I hope it gets done!)

Look at that interior image and you can see an open door from the front hall, below the cockpit door. That must lead to the mystery room below the cockpit, right?

Now look at the high-res front view. You can see that the front window is set LOWER than the cockpit deck, so people are actually looking downwards and out--although when seated you could see ahead just fine. The bottom of the window is below people's feet--there's some kind of space or equipment there, partly in front of the "mystery room." And below the cockpit deck you can see there's plenty of space for another chamber within the "chin." Look at the cockpit door for scale.

Lastly, look at the bottom view and you'll see a U-shaped hatch under the "chin"--just like the airlock hatch you can see in the top view above the spare shuttle. (I think it may be the one Early exits at the end of Objects in Space?) I also notice that the part of the chin with the hatch seems to actually hang lower than the chin. At least, it looks like that from the bottom view. In the side view, that is obscured by the antenna rig. In any case, that hatch would be in the floor of the mystery room--or in the floor of an airlock off the mystery room. (The mystery room might well contain navigation and comm equipment, since the antenna rig is attached there and it's right below the bridge.)

Second, I think any blueprint should account for the smuggling compartment(s) that are found on one or both sides of the cargo hull at floor level (false walls), as well as the space (not a full story) BELOW the cargo hold. The floor of the hold has a hatch, but it must be a double hatch (airlock) because there's a space down there. And that thickness explains how the med bay and passenger quarters can be lower than the hold--which you can tell they are. On the ground, the big front ramp leads up to floor level in the hold--but the ship is touching the ground, so there's that space below the hold. Presumably the floor of the med bay and passenger area are not nearly as thick.

Third... the thing that confuses me the most is how the upstairs and downstairs connect--especially around the cargo hold. A map showing that would be welcome! A good side view maybe. I also wouldn't mind seeing clearly how the shuttles connect to the cargo hold (a catwalk over big open space--like where Early licks the post?) and the layout WITHIN the crew quarters: ladder, bunk, sink.

One starting point might be to draw plans right on top of the high-res views. They are to scale and have no perspective distortion. (Of course the physical set may not be a 100% match for the full ship model, but I think it's pretty close. Knowing that the ship was truly built to scale inside helps!)

Thanks for working on this... I'd try my hand myself but I'm still too confused! Any more versions in progress?

OK--maybe I can help in a more concrete way :)

Can anyone tell me exactly how high the opening of the bridge door is? Not from top to floor, but from top to the raised bottom of the hatch? I imagine there's a record of the exact height of some of the actors, and probably some shots of them standing pretty straight by that door.

If you can tell me that, I'll tell you the size of the ship. The high-res ship images show that cockpit door, so I can extrapolate a good estimate.

Also--is there a gallery anywhere showing screenshots organized by room? That would be a nice resource. All kitchen shots in one place for instance.

PS--the "non-door" in back of the bridge to starboard doesn't bother me: a company building ships could easily have some standard modules with components (like doors) that not every ship needs. Maybe other ships use the same bridge as a firefly, but use two doors in back. Or maybe Serenity was repaired long ago with a replacement bulkhead that was from a slightly different ship but "good enough." The ship does seem a bit cobbled together!

GAIDHEAL

To put some speculation on Serenity's interior to rest, I've constructed some fairly accurate floor plans. These are based on screen-caps from all episodes and only represent Serenity's interior (the real world touchy feely stuff). I leave the CGI exterior to Zoic. I can only assume that they based their ship creation off the shooting set blueprints. I've left both images large to allow viewing of some of the finer details. I'm currently working on the side view connecting all deck levels.

Any questions about or discrepancies with these plans, please let me know.

Gaidheal, I tip my hat (10 gallon of course) to you. Having been fiddling around with interior schematics for ages these are the most accurate and professional I've seen. My problem has been that I've been trying to match up the exteriors with the interior, and spent most of my time trying to resolve the various discrepencies between the two. But these are the purest representations of the interior I have seen!

I would very much like to see what you have, or end up with. Currently, I am making a 3D firefly, with full interior. I plan to export it so people will be able to walk through it. Much work, but much happiness at the same time.
