Dance classes ARE way more fun than just the gym. If ballet isn't for you, try belly dancing. Seriously! Go to www.bellydancecolorado.com to see some student performances. All ages and sizes can enjoy this dance form. And fellas, you can dance too!

That being said, I only have dance class once a week. During the other days I also do water aerobics. Check your local community center to see if classes are available. I am very luck because my community center is within walking distance and only charges $2.50 per class.

My other exercise is the gym or walking. For the gym, I honestly could NOT do it without my iPod. I just have a Shuffle model (new ones around $69) but I have loaded it with fun disco, hip hop and pop music. If I just concentrate on the music, I can get through a 30 minute workout easily. If I forget my iPod, I am watching the clock the whole time muttering evil things to myself.

For the walking, I do it with a friend. While she is skinny, she has high blood pressure and needs to exercise so her head doesn't explode. We motive, nag, and help each other.

So...I got the exercise part down...and I have lost inches and do feel much better than I did before I exercised regularly. (Still Pissed off about the pounds not going away, but one thing at a time.)

It's great to see so many people starting or starting again to work out

Myself, I just finished my "morning" workout again. At day three my muscles (or lack thereof ) are starting to note there tiredness; not used to moving. Hopefully, they won't complain too much and I'll be able to get through to my week goal.

Yesterday I did do that walk. About 15 minutes brisk, picked up the wife, and about 20 mintues or so back.

There's another walk or two planned today. Got me some more stuff to do

Keep it up everybody

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Okay, worked out yesterday afternoon after work.

- Walked 4 miles

- Worked out for 30 minutes w/ the weights

- Spent 20 minutes on the bike w/ hills programmed for resistance

- Spent 20 minutes on the treadmill

I was pretty wore out when I went home. Not too sore this morning. I am psyched to hit the gym again tomorrow. The wife & I are going to the park trails this afternoon to put in another 4-5 miles this afternoon.

I warned ya about the squats - but they're worth it. keep it up (with day of rest in between) and should notice a difference in a week or two...Think how good your nice toned legs will look in shorts this summer! On your rest days you can do yoga or cardio to keep the muscles loose. Like i said, I've been doing for almost a year, and my legs are in good shape but i still find it a hard track to get through!

Today i went to a Bodyflow class at 7am!! For the past month I kept saying "yeah I'll go to 7am class one day" Well I made myself a promise that that day was today. I got up in time, my doggies still got walked, and i didn't die from gettin' up that early! it was tough, but I did it!

I'll be in Jaynes bunk

So, on the bellet with no pain...I lied. OWWW!!! The front of my legs were killing me today. So, I guess riding horses only works PART of your legs. Sheesh. But it is still fun doing all the different positions I learned in class ( I wonder if Companions ever say that? ). I am going to get my ballet shoes tomorrow. Tonight I will go back to riding horses. Barrels today. I want to do calf roping again, but no rodeos are coming up.

Have gotten a book and tape on Tai Chi, will have to see how that goes next. And I had fun yesterday using my big cat, Stone-y-ford, as a weight. Believe it or not I thought of several different exercises using him.

Does this mean that your cat should start exercising along with the rest of us

I got Pilates for Dummies and right now I'm working up to be able to do that again.

CHESHIRE

Hey all. As a female, 5'5 and 142lbs, I don’t consider myself over weight, but I wouldn't mind losing a few pounds. I'm getting married in July and want to be a little more trim for my final dress fitting. I'm already an avid daily exerciser, because 1) I have stupidly high cholesterol for someone my age, and 2) there's gym next door to my job, and I beat the traffic if I use it before work. Right now, I only do cardio - treadmill and ellipse machine. I've been reading the advice about squats for leg and rear-end toning and plan to add that to my routine.

I thought I'd chime in with a couple of ideas.

First, for those who are worried about over eating, drinking water is a great trick. Drink a tall glass of water before eating every meal. The water makes you feel full, so you eat less. Drinking water is healthy anyway; I hope every Browncoat who is becoming more active is remembering to drink more water.

Second, be sure to get enough sleep at night. I can't quote the exact science, but I read somewhere that if you're shorting yourself on sleep at night, your body stores more calories - it thinks there's some kind of an emergency situation keeping you from resting, and prepares for flight.

Third, I don't know how many of you Browncoats out there own a Play Station 2, but I highly recommend the Dance Dance Revolution video games as a form of cardio activity. A friend of mine in college lost 50lbs playing daily; my fiance has lost 10lbs since he started playing nightly about two months ago.

You've probably seen the games in an arcade - there is a pad with four arrows on it (up down left right), and you step on the arrows in time to the music and patterns being played by a song. You can buy similar equipment for use in your home. If you don't have any of the equipment, it will probably cost you at least $100 for a refurbished PlayStation 2 system, $50 for one game (there are four or five out now), and maybe $50 for the special control pad to play the game with (spring for the thicker pad, as the response is better. The pad is more comfortable on your feet as well). Large start up cost, but often cheaper then a gym membership. It takes a few tries to get the eye/foot coordination, but then you're off and dancing! There are many different levels of intensity to work at, and it can help solve the problem of getting bored with your exercise routine.

Good luck, all!

I guess I should probably list my stats so we can all see the progress, right?

Male
Height: 6'4"
Weight: 245 lb

Anyway I went hiking on the woodland trails at the park yesterday. Put in five miles.

Will be going to the gym this afternoon again.

I didn't get a chance to read all the previous posts but I'd like to post an exercise idea that I've practiced and it works for me and my girlfriend. I have never tried DDR (Dance dance revolution) but I had heard it was really fun. I got the Mario Dance mix for my gamecube and tried it out.

Now I do it 3-4 times a week for a half hour or so and it's a lot of fun do with someone else as well. I am not overweight or anything but I could lost a bit. Anyways I've lost about 10 pounds in about a month. Playing video games and exercising, what can be better?

For those who don't think they are coordinated for DDR think again. The Mario Mix version has 5 dificulties and is meant for novices. It may be hard to find but it's helped me so I'm spreading the word. I've never actually tried the real DDR but I might now that I've gotten pretty good at Mario Mix.

Just got back from my walk. It is finally looking like Spring out there....woo hoo!!

Anyway, I saw this site once where each week a new thread was started for the diet/exercise thread. How about a new thread starting each Monday for the Firefly Fit Club...we can post victories, ideas, or vent frustrations. A weekly thread will keep things from getting to long and hard to follow.

Just got back from mine too

Didn't want to do the push-ups, etc today as my upper back was starting to hurt. So, I took a 30+ min quite brisk walk. I'm actually more sweaty now than after my workouts. Then again, that might have to do with the fact that I was wearing a parka and it's only -1 out.

At any rate, I hope that everyone agrees that this counts as a workout type thing and I can call my mon-fri workout goal a win for this week.

Great idea! I second this notion

I would also suggest to take a hint from the Sereni-tree threads and post at least a link to the previous thread in the new one. That way people can look for past hints/suggestions/etc.

I am re-starting today. By watching my intake and walking, I lost 30 pounds over the last sevreal months. More like 25 at this point. I have been slacking off and over-eating. I at present am 5FT 3inches tall and about 190. Chubby, but a great improvement from before. I'll never be tiny, but I like being smaller. I'm glad to have help with this. I'm gonna go exercise now. I have a tape from the library. That means turning off Jaynestown, but it had to happen eventually. Thanks for the inspiration!
