secret passage out of the bunks on Serentiy?

In the BDM, Mal removes a grating and (I assume) crawls in and emerges from under the corridor leading to the flight deck. Judging from where he emerges, it seems that the passage would go by Mal's and Jayne's (and perhaps even the empty bunk between Jayne and Zoe) bunks. Given Jubal Early's confining them, it mightn't be a bad idea to allow for access to the passage from the bunks - an escape route. Behind the ladder would seems a logical spot. Perhaps if the show had had a second season, the crew might've done some improvements.

I assume the passage is a "wet wall" containing plumbing, ventilation and electrical systems. Or perhaps sneaky storage space. It is a smuggling ship, after all.

I don't know what you're trying to say there...oh wait, yeah I do.

Anyways, I don't have an intricate knowledge of the ship's layout, but I would imagine that under the grating there is a compartment for wiring, plumbing etc. as mentioned by the original poster. I would also assume that there isn't much room in there (it looked like Mal was standing inside it though, I attribute that to the set) since there would have to be fairly large structural members.

And what "empty bunk" are you talking about? My recollection is that there are 4 bunks (Mal's and Kaylee's on the starboard, Jayne's and Zoe/Wash's on the port). Someone correct me if I'm wrong, I don't feel like going to the FF wiki page and finding the floor plans.

What I'm curious about is where that tunnel above the engine room (that River peeks out of at the end of Serenity) leads to, because if Simon and Kaylee are going to be scrumping in there, they might want to close it up. Just a thought.

According to the RPG, there are 3 bunks on Wash & Zoe's side, 2 on the captain's side.

I thought Book was staying in the passenger rooms? I remember seeing a schematic somewhere that had him further away from them, over near Simon and River and the engine room.

As for the secret passage, I think it's more a service area than anything else. Remember, he accesses it through an air vent in the cargo hold.

Book was in the passenger dorms, next to Simon and River's bunks. You can see his room in several episodes - such as Objects in Space and Jaynestown.
