Question about the Serenity emblem on the ship

I have a project I'm thinking about and I need to answer a question. The Serenity emblem used on posters, promos, Hot Topic T-shirts, etc. has the red/orange background rings, Chinese characters and the word Serenity overlayed across the front. We all know this pretty well.

Most items I've seen have the Chinese characters arranged top to bottom. However, in the movie, when the crew is repairing Serenity, Inara is seen repainting the emblem on the ship. The characters are shown side by side, not top to bottom.

I can't remember how the emblem is displayed on the ship in Firefly. If it's even visible in any scene at all. That's my question - in Firefly - what's the orientation of the Chinese characters on the ship's emblem?

Anybody know??

(Ok, from what I know of Chinese writing, it's more traditional to write top to bottom. So maybe Universal used this on promos for that reason.)

I don't think that they're on the ship in Firefly. Or rather, I didn't notice them at all. I'm in the midst of a Firefly marathon so I'll look tonight, but I didn't see them there. Sorry. I would imagine top to bottom is better, given my limited exposure to Asian languages, but I'm by no means an expert.

It's an entirely different emblem on the TV version. The Chinese characters are side by side with "Serenity" writen across the bottom in an all capital stencil style font. It looks very minimalist, very much like Mal did it himself with whatever materials were at hand.

It appeared in the pilot. Right after the crew comes out of Badger's lair at the Eavesdown docks.
Or right close to there.

Just wondering if anyone has a still of the symbol with the characters on their side? So far i've found them running down without Serenity being written over it...but not the other way around. I have some possibly stupid, maybe cool, more than likely kinda painful ideas, but I wana compare the two together before hand.
