OK, I've been a fan of the Firefly series since I first saw them on FOX... but never got around to watching Serenity: The Movie (having kids can do that to a person).

So... I just watched the movie... and was just shocked. Why in the world would Joss Whedon kill off three members of the original cast?

There certainly was not NEED to do that. Let me repeat: I have not seen any NEED for the plot to go in that direction. I can understand death of sheapard Booke... even though it too could have been easily avoided. But accedental deaths of Wash and Simon? That's... I have no polite words to describe it.

Joss just shot himself in a foot and if there ever was a chance of resurrecting series (or doing another movie about Sereniy), it's gone.

I'm just in shock. Why would he do that?

Very disappointed in the movie.

I was upset at first also about the deaths of Book and Wash, and in fact Simon is still alive and kicking. Book, yeah understandable death. Also makes it harder to figure out just who he was before boarding Serenity. Wash's death was done to make the end of the film more dramatic. When a major character dies, you go through the entire finale of the film wondering who if any of the remaining characters will survive. It worked for me, I had the sense that no one was safe, and in fact most were injured in some way. So though you may not agree with Wash's death, I think it worked for the film. The BDM was not the series, so it fit in the entire large scale dramatic sense of the movie.

um....first of all, simon didn't die....

now that that's out of the way. at first i believed what you believed, i was pissed and sad and a whole mess of other things. i am still kinda miffed, but i have figured out that wash really isn't dead (long story, go to: http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=19261 for the whole thing about that) and that things will go their way. Wash's death opened doors for zoe to show things and also for other possibilities, but keep in mind that (at least i believe) he will be coming back, and not only in flashbacks and the such.

and do remember, this is joss. he was showing that anything could happen. there was no point to wash's death and, though i don't agree with the reason joss did this, the point of it it actually having no point was to show that ...well death doesn't have to MEAN something, doesn't have to have a purpose. it just is. like i said, i don't particularly like the reason, but it does bring up those ideas and makes it more like real life.

just a suggestion? watch it again. i did and it got better the second time around. i had put so much into the movie, so many hopes for it, that when things turned out as they did i was way disappointed, i also thought that the characters weren't the same. the second time around it gets better....of course, the second time around i looked down when wash started to say "leaf on the wind". but it's good now. is a purely joss masterpiece.

keep flyin'

MALNOURISHED

Joss said himself that if Serenity were only for FF fans he would have made it less "kill-y." As mentioned in an above post, he had to set the bar higher for drama and conflict with the BDM and unfortunately that meant that the crew would be in mortal peril. While it's painful to see beloved characters die, don't go thinking that their stories are over if there is another movie or series. Joss is a very clever man, and he will surprise us. Let's just hope he gets the chance.

Yeah you're right of course, I watched again and this time paid closer attention to the memorials and last scenes.

Still, quite a bummer about Booke and Wash.

And about who Book was before he became a Shepherd... I think he was a disillusioned Alliance agent/bounty hunter, much like the one who tried to stop Capt. Reynolds... history repeats itself.

Still disappointed in movie though. Acting and character development was... not what I expected. Kaylee's "You mean... sex?" just made me cringe as did a few other moments... Oh well.

Sorry, just thought I'd throw that in there.

Lonesail1, there is quite a discussuon on this matter at the link EngineAngel posted. So far it doesn't seem to be getting close to burning out. Someones always adding gas the the flame. Go there and put your $5 in.

At the very start of "Jaynestown", Inara was leaving for a client, and Kaylee, who was talking to Simon, says to her "Have good sex!", in a totally innocnt and natural way, embarassing the hell out of Simon. She's always been upfront about her desires. So I think the line from the movie was totally in line with the character we knew.

I was somewhat disappointed too, but mostly because it wasn't the series, it couldn't be, and I knew that before going in.

The thing that got me the most was Serenity's interiors, which didn't have the same comfortable, lived in look that the sets from the series did. It didn't really feel like a "home" anymore. (And I really appreciate the amazing job they did with lighting on the series a lot more now).

In spite of all this I still love the movie, already one of my all time faves, but the series was something very special which we're not going to see again.

STICK

If you watch the dvd with the commentary on Joss said that he had to 'kill' a prominent character in order to give the final scene a sense of "mortal peril, that maybe no one will make it out alive." to leave the audience to wonder if the hallway was going to turn into the serenity crew's alamo.

Joss has dropped hints that Wash is probably not gone forever should the story continue. What exactly that means is between Joss and Wash though.

The part about Kayle talking about sex shouldn't be something to cringe about. If you have seen Out of Gas, this is how we were all introduced to her to begin with.

Simon: What if he(Mal) tells you to kill me.
Zoe: (without hesitation) I kill you.

I guess whether or not you cringe when Kaylee talks about sex depends on how you look at her. If you look at her as Mal does, then you just can't know that it's goin' on a year now and she ain't had nothing twixt her nethers that weren't run on batteries. However, if you look at her as Jayne does, then you could stand to hear a little more.

Personally, like Jayne, I could stand to hear more.

The reason the set didn't look quite the same is because it wasn't the same set. The original set had been dismantled, and nobody thought to even measure it before they just destroyed it. They watched the series and came up with how the set should look.

No it wasn't. That is how Mal first saw her. The crew after the fact.

We were introduced to her either in The Train Job, or Serenity (pilot v2) depending on the order you first viewed the series.

Yeah, I noticed that the set for the movie was in different tones than the Tv set. I knew it wasn't the same set. The movie one is in cooler blue hues than the warmer rust colors of the T.V set.
Just a note about the movie- what happened to the scene with Mal and Inara on Miranda!? It was in the shooting script and was cut from the movie. Yeah I know not everything can be in the film, but according to the official companion photos they shot the scene and then cut it. So why isn't it on the DVD!?

And is there a longer gag reel for Firefly? I heard a rumor at one time.

If you take a look at Zoe and Wash during that scene you'll see each has a little smile.

Kudos to the cast and crew for holding it in, the wife and I were LOL.

Yeah, I knew that, but it's just stuff like all the screens on board the Serenity looked just like standard LCD screens, giving the movie the same kind of look and feel as so much other sci-fi, whereas everything in the series had a wonderfully "rustic" appearance to it, which I thought of as a big part of the series, and I missed it in the movie.

You can find the extended gag reel (in four different parts) here: http://www.versaphile.com/download/firefly.html

Quality is kinda poor, but well worth watching.
Especially for the bit from "The Message", you'll see what I mean.
