What Is SciFi doing with Firefly?

O.K. Now I'm puzzled. First SciFi airs the repeats of Firefly in December, again in January and then again in March. Then they announce they have bought the complete rights to Firefly.

I figured one of two things was coming. Either a regular airing of the series, the continued once a month marathon or possibly (in my fevered desire for it to be true) production on new episodes.

But it's not on the shedule for April, (something I found out at the beginning of March since they post two months shedule at a time). So April comes and I check the SciFi schedule for May and still no Firefly.

So what gives? Does SciFi just love buying up the right to series that it has no plans to air? Or do they have plans for a new limited series in which they produce and air 10-12 episodes and then releasese it on DVD?

I would hope it is the latter, but I am truly puzzled as of this writing.

Where did you read that they had bought the full rights?

It's clear as crystal: They are punishing us for talking at the theatre. This truly is the special hell.

They can only rerun 14 episodes so many times before it gets old to viewers.

I thought I saw in the USA Today, but I could be mistaken. It might have been on the SciFi channel's website.

I found several via google:
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/article/ds30578.html

http://digg.com/movies/Firefly_rights_out_of_Fox_s_hands_

What these articles don't make clear via any formal documentation that I could find is whether Sci-Fi simply bought exclusive broadcast rights for the existing content or whether they bought the creative rights also. I suspect it is the prior and I would be confident saying that that is definately the case for thier Star Trek stuff. Fox *might* give up the creative rights for Firefly now that the movie is out on DVD. One can only hope we'll see Serenity on NBC at some point since they are tied in with Universal. It would be awesome to put Serenity on after some high audience event.

{edit} as followmal observed and I will concur it appears this is the UK not US SciFi network. Big difference.

I'm sorry Milford.. it was when I was young, and inexperienced... I don't want to be responsible for it all now.... I'm so sorry.. *hangs head in shame*

This truly is the special hell... I miss Firefly

I believe that what you may have seen is the news that the UK SciFi channel is going to start showing Firefly ( old eps ), that they are the ones who got the rights to do that.. and the key thing is that they will be showing them in primetime. More folks comin' to the 'verse.

Firefly and Serenity are like rich relatives. More is always better.
