I posted this a while back, but got very few responses.

It concerns getting Firefly back on the air. All you naysayers out there are probably right... but you're definately right if we don't do anything.

Ok, so here it goes. What's the one way to get Firefly back on the air? If the producers see a profit in it. That's it, the only way, shizzam, bada bing bada boom bada bang. Not an original idea. The fact is our approach is wrong. We've been writing to the studios, the decisions makers, etc. The fact is, we're not the ones who'll be giving them the money (until the dvd set is released, at least). Who will it be?

The advertisers. It'll be Bounty, General Mills, State Farm, Ford, Jimmy Dean, EA Sports, etc etc etc. They're the ones who send the networks the money. If we can't convince the networks there is enough viewers, why not try the guys who write the big paychecks.

"Hey Tom, I got this letter saying that series Firefly could get a lot of viewers if it was released. What if we got our name in that? That's a horde of dedicated people who'll see our Gizmo's."
"Firefly? I've heard of it. Aren't those people obsessed?"
"Exactly: 'Made Possible By Gizmo Tech,' they'll be buying our Gizmo's like candy"
"We'll talk the our advertisers about it."

Ok, so it probably wouldn't go something like that. But what if all those companies got thousands of letters to the effect of "We'll buy your stuff, and millions more will see your stuff, if" blah blah blah you get the picture.

I suggested a related idea a while back: the "no surfing pledge".

What is the one big complaint from TV advertisers these days? Nobody watches their commercials. We all sit there with our remotes and, as soon as the ads come on, it's over to the other channel to check on the game or whatever.

Now, one thing we Fireflanatics can offer a network and its advertisers is a promise not to surf. It's hardly a sacrifice, since I for one wouldn't want to risk missing those first few seconds of post-commercial show.

So I'd gladly promise to watch any and all commercial messages of Firefly's sponsors. I'd go so far as to promise to buy those products, as long as they were items I could use (e.g. not feminine hygiene products).

What more could an advertiser want?

That'd take some research. Correlate data on the demographics of browncoats with targets of advertisers...

My suggestion is just pick a few. We'd need a few thousand to make a rumble, so don't go out and send letters just yet.

Unfortunately, I haven't watched TV regularly in years. I don't know what's advertised anymore. So, someone else, make a list...

I know somebody somewhere (possibly the UB?) posted all of the advertisers from Sci-Fi's Firefly airings each week, along with contact information so that they could be thanked.

Anyone else remember this?

The advertisers that come most to my mind when thinking of Firelfy, Sci-Fi, et al, are the "geek-centric" retailers - Best Buy, Circuit City, video games for various platforms, computers, iPod devices, cell phones, and so on. By and large, we Browncoats ARE a group of people who embrace technology and buy it in large quantities, so it makes sense to start there. At least it makes sense in my 'verse... :)

At a more local level, local game and comix shops could get in on the action, too. I don't think that ALL Browncoats are D&D players or comic book/graphic novel readers, but there do seem to be more of those types of people here than on other forums I've seen.

And of course, movie trailers and DVD releases would make great advertisements for Browncoats, too, as long as they're targetted correctly (more Doom, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica and the like, and less Pride & Prejudice and Failure to Launch would be a good place to start).

Of course, auto makers shouldn't be left out, either - and they have deep pockets to advertise with. Volvo comes to mind, with their tie-in to Virgin Galactic and the promise of a space trip to some lucky soul. Toyota and Honda can advertise their hybrid technology to people who are more likely to "get it", and all the carmakers can have their dream of a captive audience of youngish folk with money to spend and a willingness to spend it.

FLORALBUNNY


When the fans took out a full-page ad, they listed and thanked sponsors of the original Fox airings. It's shown on one of the DVD extras. I can look it up if you're interested and can't find it somewhere around here.
Dunno who sponsored it on SciFi (no cable in my house) but the geeky stuff sounds appropriate.
