Here's a bit of info concerning the Firefly universe that was in an article published by the Denver Post:

Quote:

Gangsters and geishas mingle in this Asian-influenced future. In Whedon's scenario, the U.S. and China have been the two ruling powers for many years; everyone speaks Chinese and English and signs in both languages are scrawled on the ship's walls.

The action occurs in a galaxy where numerous planets and moons have been colonized and "terraformed" or converted to Earthlike habitable spaces.

These various worlds look much like the Southern California of "Stagecoach."

Now, you would think that there might be more Asian characters on the series. I wonder if that's going to happen. Whedon's series have been pretty homogeneous (not counting demons and such) in the past.

I noticed when I watched the Episode "Serenity" that many of the people where in Asian costume, especially the women and the Ambassador.

Also inside Serenity there is a room that has the classic japanese sliding paper screens as doors, like in Shojun.

So yes there is a strong Asian influence.

Yes, exactly! I would love to have an Asian character on this series, especially considering these spoilers. One incredibly interesting detail of the Wild West (of both the U.S. and Canada) is that many Chinese immigrated to work in the gold mines, to work (essentially as slaves) for the railway barons. Like the Heritage commercials say, "There is one Chinese man buried for every three miles of railway track." This would be a fascinating aspect of history to explore.

I wonder if Joss consults an actual Chinese (or at least someone very familiar with Chinese culture) to make sure the Chinese aspect of the series is correct.

It could be something as simple as eating rice off a plate with chopsticks, which, by the way, is not proper etiquette. Or, worst, poke the chopstick into the rice bowl.

It's certainly going to be interesting. Of all the culture Joss had to pick, he picked Chinese--a culture that has 4699 years of history behind it. There are certainly enough references to go around to get wrong.

In the shot on this site where 2 Alliance men are standing in front of a comp display looking at each other, one looks Asian. So, that's one.

Hey, one reason we're all JW fans: he doesn't fake it.

Actually, he isn't. That happens to be Domingo Vara, who I'm guessing is Hispanic.
