Hey Chris,

it´s my favourite Trek movie as well! Strange but true: the trekkies named this film themselves "motionless". I always wondered why... I think it´s the only Trek movie with a real great sf-plot.

So please: Don´t arghhh me....

Back in the day (circa 1979) where I lived, the angry contingent of the Trekkies first named it "Star Trek: The Motion Sickness"

Thinking about Star Trek - The Motion picture...
Remember this 10-Minute-Shuttle-Flyaround with the great music from Jerry Goldsmith in the beginning?! I want something like that in the Sequel to Serenity! And the crew in the shuttle is singing "Hero of Canton" all the time. Can we have a petition, please?!

I didn't see anyone post it, so I'll say Event Horizon. Gave me nightmares for days.

At last.

Star Trek - TMP:

Loved the sense of awe and wonder, and the updated, high-res Enterprise.

Hated the fact that the plot was a rehash of an episode from TOS. Come on, couldn't they think of anything new?

Wasn't even one of their better episodes, either.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I don't disagree on any particular point.
TMP gave the story a grander vision; a sense of scope. And a meaning we can ALL relate to- "Is this all that I am, is there nothing more?"
For my money, one of the greates pieces of sci-fi ever, right up there with Serenity and Blade Runner.
TMP was good, but personally I prefer The Wrath of Khan, if only for the great revenge driven story.
Also Aliens. Thos marines kinda remind me of the crew of serenity in the way they interact with each other, even if they all do come from the same profession.
"Thats it man, game over man, game over! What the f*** are we gonna do now?!"
"Why don't we build a fire, sing a couple of songs, huh? Would you like that?"
(Exchange between Hudson and Burke in said movie)
Right now I recommend:
Doctor Who (it is really good, funny & entertaining right now)
Battlestar Galactica (the last season just ended and it was awesome)
Farscape (cancelled, but the shows are all on DVD and a really fun)
Babylon 5 (also cancelled but available & really exciting)
in movies my all time favorite is:
(of course Serenity but we're talking about others, right?)
Galaxy Quest
Sci-fi and Fantasy movies you should check out:
Brotherhood of the Wolf (must see)
Event Horizon
Primer (looks boreing but is really good)
The Fifth Element
Stargate (both movie and TV show SG1)
The City of Lost Children
The I Inside
No Such Thing
Dark City
eXistenZ
Interview with the Vampire
Jurassic Park (personally I also liked the 3rd one)
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
Bubba Ho-tep (Bruce Campbell kicks a**)
Cube
Gattaca
Pitch Black
Mars Attacks (one of my favorite Tim Burton movies)
Twelve Monkeys
Equilibrium
The Dark Crystal
Hellboy
Undead
The Jacket
Wallace & Gromit: the Curse of Were-Rabbit
Stephen King's Kingdom Hospital
A Sound of Thunder (some crappy special effects and a bit different then the original short story but a fair movie about the parils of time travel)
If you go to www.filmaffinity.com you can get movie recommendations from people who have similar taste in movies as you; also you can help promote Firefly/Serenity by recommeding it to other people.
CONTACT
I just saw it again on cable and have had the book in the backseat of my car for the longest time. I understood it when I first saw it when I was twelve and I still love it to this day. Not only is it one of the most realistic sci-fi movies ever, but it's also an intersting meditation of faith and belief.
To my mind, there have only been three sci-fi movies that blend religion with science fiction. THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND and CONTACT.
"There's only one "Return" ok, and it ain't "of the King", it's "of the Jedi."
"Maybe we should start calling your friend 'Padme' because he loves 'Mannequin Skywalker' so much, Right? (imitating robot) Danger...danger...my name is Anakin...my shitty acting is ruining saga."
Excerpt of internet teaser for CLERKS 2.
I have Robert Wise´ digital restored Director´s Ed. on DVD. It has some great almost pink floydish colours compared to the VHS-Version! I don´t know, how often I have watched that movie, but whenever I do, it still strucks me. The score from J. Goldsmith is still among the best ever been done and it works just so fine with the images. And I love the (missing) pace of that movie, e.g. the flight through the V´ger – Cloud.
Maybe it is not so much consistent with the original series and the established relationship between Kirk, Spock & Bones, but I always thought that being an improvement from a soapy space opera (which was ok on TV) to big screen science fiction.
I liked The Wrath of Khan as well, cause it was fast, action-packed and funny, but as a longtime fan of Science Fiction, I find it was a huge step backwards.
As always it´s a question of taste.
Rest in peace Mr. Goldsmith, you will be sorely missed. A legend, if it was not him at the podium, it was most likley John Williams. These two men have made the music of our lives.
Sorry to be off topic but JG deserves another nod of respect.
