I work in a tech department at a local university, and have access to theater type rooms, complete with 20 foot screens and sound systems.
I'm wondering how much legal problems I would have if I were to create a showing of all the series episodes (without admission charges, of course!) and cap it off with Serenity.... anyone know the answer to that? I know instructors who have shown them for classes, and we have had instructors create theme nights and show movies released on DVD...
Be a great way to spread the word!

I have no idea about the rules, but I wish someone would do that where I live!

Where are you, BTW?

That's a good question! Personally I don't think Joss would have any problems with Firefly being shown to a large audience, however, Fox may not like it. lol

I'm trying to think of what department would be in charge of that kind of thing. If your school has a student-run activity board, talk to them about it. They might know legalities/they might be interested in your idea.

Any laws that I've seen aways revolve around making money. You're safe there, but you might want to get a more informed opinion, IANAL.

I'd recommend going to your student association and/or student union as they may (probablyl) have been involved in setting something like this before.

Good luck

Hey again folks,
I just spoke to my supervisor. He's of the opinion that so long as there is a discussion held afterwards (in other words treating it like a class), there is no violation of copyright rules.
Just thought everyone would like to know, maybe you can organize one at your college or university!

There's the answer right there. FOX or some other corporation, if they found out, would've been all over you. Did your sup say anything about having to contact anyone for permission just in case? CYOA as they say

*nod* You can be sure I'm investigating this further. I just wanted everyone to know that there's light at the end of the tunnel. It may get turned off, but hope lives for now.

That's so, so very cool. I love it. Surely if you're not making a profit off it, they can't say anything? Could just be a big bunch of people hangin' out, doin' something they love.

Fabulous, FABULOUS VicMackey. Would you mind awfully if I nicked the idea and tried to get something similar running in Edinburgh?

Also, have you set a date? Check out the 'Get up and do Something' thread...there's some excitement about mass co ordination on June 23.

Love your work.

If someone had a vidoe camera in the audience then im sure that counts as a breach, but as long as you dont make money, or if you make money for charity (because no-one would convict against a charity) youre fine.

*laugh* If they can get a viewable copy from video taping our equipment, more power to them. We have decent equipment, but it's no where near theater quality.
The rooms are not that large, and it would be fairly easy to spot someone trying.
We'll toss 'em to the Reavers.

No dates set, this idea is still just a seed. But I've already got a co-chair should it go through.

One of our professors did something similar a few years ago. He was able to get a couple of the writers for Deep Space Nine to make a public appearance, and I'm hoping he's a Firefly fan as well. How cool would it be to get a Firefly writer to come visit??

You can always do it the italian way.
Just do it, I suppose the audience won't report it to get you sued...

Hey, I hate when my folks behave this way, but what the hell.
Mal would do it ;)

If you're not charging for it, I don't think there's a problem.

You could always just cut Fox a royalty cheque worth $0.00 just in case ;)
