Hey petals

So, there's this thing being organised for June 23. I'm in Edinburgh. I want someone to play with.

And seeing as the UK premiere (am I right?) was at the EIFF last year, I was wondering what the chances are of getting a screening going.

'Course it depends how many of you are out there. Or if I'm all on my ownsome.

Talk to me soon.

I've got a friend at uni up there (i'm sure he will be back in the south west for the holiday) he is also a firefly fan but dosent use the boards. I could ask him but if he dosent use the boards i doubt he knows of any meeting groups.

Aw, shininess! This is much better. Hey'all!!!

I'm gonna talk to the Uni Film Soc and see what they can do for us.

Just keep this thread running and get as many others on board as you can...I'm thinking we need at least 100 to get stuff moving. And not so much time!

Did anyone go to the premiere last autumn? Any good stories?

It's at the MacRoberts Art Centre at Stirling Uni. Might want to give them a call and see if they can advise of anyone who might help with June, but I think it's just an ordinary screening, not for any charity or such.

Hey Rach

I'm in, you just tell me what I can do! Don't know anyone at the uni unfortunately, but wondering whether the cameo or the filmhouse might be interested on getting in on the act if it's for charidee? Probably a long shot since they both have normal film schedules but if the uni doesn't work out I'm happy to get in touch with them and see what they say...

ooh, what about the Dominion? They have hosted charity events in the past and with being owned independently of chains they might be more flexible with scheduling.

Hoping the uni come up with the goods though!

I'll have a think and see if I can come up with any ideas for marketing (I work in arts marketing in our fair city of Edinburgh) - if this thing gets off the ground then it would be good to spread the word as far and wide as possible, especially if we can do it for nothing! I'll give it some thought and get back to you.

Keep in touch

Hey guys,

Good to see more of you coming in!

Carolyn, you're in the know! I love it: a decent marketing campaign would be a wonderful thing, 'specially if we can get a teaser campaign running pretty soon. I'm speaking to the Pleasance tomorrow and I'll let you know what they say: scoring the Cameo or the Filmhouse would be AMAZING but my only problems are that
(a) the 23rd is a Friday, so they may not be willing to give schedule time.
(b)although there are screenings in the US that are connected to the Equality First charity, nothing has been mentioned in the UK yet.

It would be wonderful if a relevant charity that someone feels passionately about could benefit from the screenings, not to mention get revenue from. However, if a screening is to be charity linked, I reckon it has to be a genuine connection, with a convincing link. I'm very, VERY open to suggestions: prove your case! But otherwise, we may have to be careful.

Whaddya all think?

Speak soon

As to the first, while June 23 is the preferred, it's also been made clear that any day that week leading up to, and including, June 23 works just as well, since it would still allow us to announce most of the grand total on Joss' birthday.

There also are a couple of straggler events taking place on June 24, the day after.

As for the other quoted part, I'm confused. What do you mean a "genuine connect, with a convincing link"? Is there some specific set of rules for these things in the UK? Back here in the US, we can basically just hold an event and give the proceeds to Equality Now.

Hey Bix

I've been scouting around the cantstoptheserenity site, and I've already spoken with you a little about my concerns.

You've said on the disclaimer that it is preferable if the 2 events and aims were kept distinct and separate: i.e. the screenings and the DVD purchase. Surely your own aim in hosting the screenings was twofold - both as a fan event and a fundraiser; to promote Serenity and to raise money and awareness for the charity? And is there anything particularly harmful in linking the two aims, without making one subordinate to the other?

I have no problem linking the screening to a charity. If revenue and awareness is going to be raised, I would prefer if it went to a good cause. I just think there are two good causes here that could benefit equally.

I don't know much about Equality Now. I had assumed it was a US charity, and would therefore have preferred a local Scottish charity for battered women etc. to benefit. I think I was perhaps mislaid by the emphasis of it being Joss Whedon's favourite charity, rather than the work done. That's not a dig: for me, I was confused somewhat as to whether the charity had been picked because it's an excellent cause or because of the connection to Joss.

I've had a quick look at the website: it's obviously an international charity and does some magnificent work. I'd like a chance to speak with some of Scottish fans interested in helping to organise the screening, and then perhaps speak to you about linkning with it.

I still think that there is a case to be made to have the new screenings being organised linked to charity events, if people believe in them. You could make persuasively with experience behind you.

Guys!
Yo!
I was involved with organising an Edinburgh Screening with someone called Rachel McCrum - I'm guessing this is the 'Rach' from this board cos she was banging on about petals as well! But she's dropped off the map completely, not getting back to me at all.
I'm at uni in Edinburgh, I'm around until the end of May then going back to Glasgow but still within striking distance. Anyone who is at the uni or wants to help PLEASE get in contact with me! I don't want to organise this completely by myself, I think that's reasonable. I finish my exams on Tuesday, so when I come to on Wed I am happy to take point on trying to set it up, but I'd like to know there are people that would show, and bring their mates cos with uni not being in session I would struggle to raise a crowd solo!!!! Please get back to me asap, use my uni email s0452500@sms.ed.ac.uk cos my hotmail's dodgy!
Thanks!!!!

Hey guys!

Okay, sending this to Euan's email, but posting here as well so that everyone else is in the loop.

One of my friends and i are willing to help out a bit - I'm working post uni (my ed uni exams finish saturday), while my friend is at heriot watt and his exams are right before june 23 - but if there's any sort of wee things we can help out with, we'd be willing to do them (anything to get Serenity back on the big screen!)

My friend also has a group of friends in Glasgow who would probably come to a screening, so that's another few people we can add to our list of attendees - which seems to be growing!

Let us know if there's anything we can do - though first priority seems to be getting a theatre to show serenity in!

Yo guys!

I'm sending this to everyone who has replied to me, plus posting it on fireflyfans.net. So far we've got Erica, Amy and Graeme.

Basically, Amy was right in her message we need to find a cinema! I really think our best bet is The Pleasance Theatre - it's owned by the uni so we would have an advantage that its probably not in use on June 23rd, don't think the festival stuff has kicked off by then. Its a 300 capacity venue, probably right for us (what do you think?). I have emailed the person who handles hiring it out to societies as I reckon that's our way in! If I don't hear back from them tomorrow I will go and try to find them for a chat.

Our other option would be the Cameo - a lot harder to hire for a screening such as this. We are running out of time before June 23rd, I may have left it too late but gotta keep hope! If anyone has any ideas lets have them! My other thought was it would be cool to have a Kaylee after (excuse the horrendous pun, I thought it was funny) if we have enough people confirmed.

We're trying to get a screening organised for Sunday 25th June in Glasgow.
So far we've sounded out the GFT and Cineworld and they're both able to do it, but we need to know if anyone would come. No point hiring a cinema for a charity showing if no one shows.
The cinemas need to know sooner rather than later so they can get to work on getting the rights to show the movie which means we need an idea of numbers.

Thanks.
