OK, someone posted some of the hacks that would let you play any region of DVD on your DVD player and a type of DVD player that would do this easily...and I wrote the info down and my STUPID idiotic non-Browncoat cat puked all over the desk and got that note.

So.....I need to know if there is such a hack for a JVC (not sure of model number, remote is RM-SXV001A) or a Teac 3000 DVD player....
and if not, the kind I need plus the hack for it...

Thank you all kindly.

Would any of you like a cat?

I don't know about hacks for a set-top player, but if you have a computer with a DVD drive then you can search the file-sharing networks for a program called anyDVD. It strips ALL protections (including regions, Macrovision, and custom players (e.g. Harry Potter movies)) off of ANY DVD (only while the disc is in the computer though).

If pirating software is not something that you want to do then you can go to www.slysoft.com and buy it as well. If you do not have a file-sharing program then I recommend Bearshare ( www.bearshare.com).

Also if you are desperate then computer DVD drives allow you to change their region. But they only allow a certain number of changes and they will only play discs from the current region.

Good Luck.

Can't responde about the hacks, but if you have a PC or laptop with DVD capabilities (and software, as I found out to my chagrin), you can just adjust the region setting.

Hell, my computer has a program for DVDs that allows you 5 or 6 free intial adjustments based on the DVD's region code:)

P.S. Ask around for regionless DVD players...suckers are getting to be dirt cheap by now.

Even if your DVD player will play it, your TV may not.

If you're in the US or Canada, your TV uses the NTSC system. The Australian DVD is in PAL format. Most NTSC TVs will not display a PAL signal properly. You end up seeing something that looks a bit like a scrambled cable channel.

There are (expensive) software techniques to convert from one format to another, but I haven't found a "consumer" version of that technology.

So, unless you live in a PAL region of the planet, you may well be limited to watching the Aussie DVD on your computer (which shouldn't have a problem with PAL format).

Well, I've been telling everyone about this DVD player for a while now, and yes, it will convert PAL to NTSC, and yes, it can EASILY be made region free, and as an added bonus, if you download an mpg or avi video, it will play it on a disc you burn it out on! Great player for the money. It is only $54 at Walmart: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=2598455

Here's the hack info, it couldn't be easier:

1. Turn on the player.
2. Open the tray.
3. Press the following sequence on the remote:
7 8 9 OK 0
4. The number 0 will appear on the lower left side of your screen.
5. Your player is now region free! Put in a DVD and enjoy! :)

NOTE: The 0 in the sequence above represents the region code. 0 = region free. If you want to change your player to just a specific region code, replace the 0 with the region number you want.

Yeah, you can buy a Cyberhome DVD player that will probably play it for about $35 at Wallyworld, but the added features of the Philips are worth the extra $20 in my opinion. The box it comes in says, "You have it, we play it." and that's pretty much true. I have 2 of these players, my parents have one, and all my friends have them as well, so we can share avi files to watch!

use the website above to find your DVD player. the one i use is DMTech DM-2000. You can make it play whatever region/region free stuff by opening the disc tray, clicking the setup button on the remote, going to the custom option and then typing in 3 3 3 3. pick the region, close the disc tray, and you're off. as an added bonus it can convert PAL to NTSC stuff because under one of the menus in the setup screen is an option to choose whether or not the TV is PAL or NTSC or CAN HANDLE BOTH. right now our TV is on NTSC because that's what my roommates TV is and my picture was fine last night when I watched the special features.

but that website might be able to tell you if your DVD player can convert the format as well.

Thanks for the heads-up about the DVD players that do PAL-to-NTSC conversion. Good myth! Er, I mean, nice feature.

Can you see any visible effects when you're watching a PAL disc on an NTSC set? The two formats aren't that easily interchanged. PAL has more vertical lines, for example -- do they just clip these off, or somehow reencode the whole picture into fewer lines? What about the 50/60 fields/sec issue, any idea how that's handled? Any strange motion artifacts or anything? Can you do frame-by-frame freeze frame on a PAL disc?

Just curious as to whether it's worth getting an extra player for my one-and-only PAL DVD (Aussie Serenity, of course).

Aaaaaahhh!!!! Technical jargon! I don't know the specifics; I just know that I hacked my player, popped the DVD in, hoped for the best, and it worked. I didn't notice anything too terribly different and neither did my roommate. Maybe just hack the player and see if yours works. I don't think the PAL-NTSC is advertised because I didn't see anything about it in the user's manual.

I really can't see any visible effects when playing a PAL disc, but there is always a little line at the VERY top left of the screen, which is normal when your player converts PAL to NTSC I'm told. I never noticed it until someone pointed it out once, and it is there, but once again, not really noticable, and my $300 Momitsu V880 does the same thing, I checked.

Bascially, besides that thin line, which you can't see hardly at all, you'd never know you were watching a PAL disc at all!

Easter dinner, anyone? LOL

Thanks so much for all the info! I will probably try hacking mine first then buy the one at WalMart that will play anything. That should come in handy should I land those con panel videos I am also looking for. :)

You guys are awesome!

I swear, if anyone needs to know something there is a Browncoat out there with the info!
