I was doing some research on the German Amazon.com, as I'm planning to buy my German friends a set of Firefly/Serenity (Region 2) on June 23rd as part of the Firefly/Serenity blitz. They are being so kind as to let me crash on their couch for the World Cup finals in July. Woot! I figured this was an appropriate payback.

I translated the Serenity product page using Google. It was fun reading the reviews. Check it out.

Oh dear. What a translation! My eyes cannot stand it!!! LOL.

Just a few examples:

"...particularly mysterious history around the traumatisierten and moody blind passenger on board the spaceship Serenity: River Tam (buzzer Glau)" <-- Hmmm... I guess I must have missed the whole blind issue during my multiple viewings of the series and the movie... *snort*

"The occupation of Serenity supplies a well balanced mixture from depth and humor and consists of Nathan Fillion as Captain mark Reynolds" <-- Did our captain change his name while I wasn't looking??

The whole translation of the review from German to English is hilarious!

I love it. They should add German as a third language in the 'verse. Seriously.

'knackigen Actionsequenzen'...I mean, I can kinda guess what it means, but my new mission is to find a way to drop it into casual conversation.

What's a 'Draufgaengertum'?

All things said, mind you, it's a comprehensive review. Nice Star Wars dig! And Blue Sun mention.

Hera, which city? Hamburg, by any chance?

Oh how I would love that. But it looks like they didn't need cars in space, and mudder's milk replaced beer, so I guess Germany didn't play such an important role anymore. Although I like the notion of a German spaceship manufacturer in the Firefly universe.

"Knackig" means "crisp" or "crunchy", like an apple. It sometimes means "fancy" or "fresh", but it's mostly used for butts - a "Knackiger Hintern" is a well shaped, firm butt. Crunchy. See the Firefly connection? Need I really quote this: "How'd you like a bite of this green apple, America?".
Knackiger butt, indeed.
And this brings us to your chance to drop "knackig" into casual conversation:
"Hey, knackiger butt, Nathan!"
Pronounced "k-nuck-ee(short)-gah", but be sure to pronounce the first "k" or it's gonna translate as "naked" ("nackig") butt. A fact which you could of course use to say "Knackiger nackiger butt!", which would mean "Nice naked butt!". If you want to put it ALL in German, it's "Knackiger nackiger Hintern!" ("Hinn-tan") or "Popo" (cuter, pronounced po-po, with the "o" as in "Ogre".
Ogre? Wtf?)
Anyways, "knackige Actionszenen" is a compliment, whichever way you put it. I'd go with "fresh and shiny action sequences".

"Daredevildom" or "Daredevilness". Neither of which are words, I presume. Well, they're now. I particularily like "Daredevildom". I got stakes on that one. Say it out loud. Ain't it a shiny word?
And it's MIIIIIIIIIIINE!

Frankfurt, actually. I've never been to that city before, but a free couch is a free couch. We won't be able to get into any of the actual matches, but we plan on sitting in a lot of beer gardens with football (soccer) fans. I'm so psyched they invited me!

Spent some time in Wurzburg and Freiburg in the past. Lovely places.

Why, you live in Hamburg, eh?

Yeah. Would have been nice to meet for a coffee or a beer (or Sake, not really into beer, myself).
Ah well, not supposed to be, I guess.
Frankfurt is quite boring, btw. Hamburg is where it's at! Or Cologne if you're gay! Or Munich if you're like 200 years old!
But have fun all the same!

Frankfurt? Boring? How dare you, fish-head!

Dear Hera!

We have some pretty cool skyscrapers here, you´re going to believe, you´re still in the U.S.! I remember, even Woody Allen liked it here (and he´s usually not leaving Manhattan anyway.)

The river “Main” is running through the city and I remember they´re going to have very big screens on the terraces of the Main, where you can watch the soccer-championship. It´s gonna be great!

The special beverage here is “Apfelwein”, wine made out of apples (close to cidre, without gas). Tastes a bit strange at first but after 1 or 2 litres it improves, until you collapse…

Close to Frankfurt is the beautiful valley of the Rhein-river with it´s vineyards and castles, a tremendous landscape with a looooooong history. There are some shiny little medieval cities, some of them overrun by japanese tourists, e.g. Rüdesheim (imagine, Disneyland to be 1.000 years old and you get the picture). Maybe even you´re recently learned Mandarin might be of some help there… You could try some swears there and see if anybody reacts...

If you like, you may do trip to Wiesbaden. It´s the place were my wife and I live, just 30 km´s west of Frankfurt. It´s a sleepy, yet beautiful city with 270.000 residents and some very beautyful 19th century city-areas.

Have a nice trip!

"Oh Dragonbreth! Gilthorpial!" he yodeled, waving his cleaver around like a madman. He lunged at the nearest wraith with his unwieldly sword. "Banzai!" he screamed. "No quarter asked or given! Dam* the torpedoes" Taking a vicious swipe, Stomper missed his mark by a good yard and tripped on his scabbard.

Hey there Agatsu / Hey there Arabikum:

No fighting, now. We must celebrate the diversity that is Germany!

I think my friends are taking me to Weisbaden, and they have already waxed poetical about Apfelwein. I can't wait to try it. I love Federweise (feather-white?) waaay too much. It goes down so easy, and then you're sitting on the floor and wondering where your legs have gone. I like the light carbonation.

If my friends and I are anywhere close to you guys in Hamburg or Weisbaden (July 5--10th), I'll drop you a line via FFF.net and mayhap we can meet up for a beverage. I have full loan of a bicycle while I'm there. Who knows where I'll end up!

I'm partial to this gem of an observation from one of the customer reviews:

(note: Adam Baldwin has nichts with the 'Baldwin-Bruedern' to do. It originates from Chicago, the Baldwin brothers from Long Iceland!)

Yes I know it's just an artifact of the translation software but Long Iceland? I wonder if that is where the make the famous iced tea? Oh the giggle fits.

And a bit farther down we have this gem, "Not completely as well as the series of Firefly..." Which I think may become my new signature.

I'd very much like that.
And I don't wanna disrespect your city, Arabikum, but Hamburg is much more FUN. I prefer fun over scyscrapers any day.
