Yay, the first representatives of other fansites show up! A big WELCOME, Casinova!

And yeah, be nice to newbs! What gives?
Loved your post, FollowMal. You know, I know, but I wanted them to know, you know.

As long as our "leaders" work together and for the common cause, I'm behind them, no matter who they are. Only shiny people here anyways. There is no "I" in "Browncoats".

It may sound ridiculos, but my personal secret aim for us is 1 mill for Universal. We should be able to pull that off. I myself, am probably going to purchase 5 copies of just Serenity alone, and there's tens of thousands of us.
There was another thread around, quite recently, about how much money people would be willing to DONATE to get the Serenity flying again. Well, I dare those people to purchase copies of Serenity off Amazon on our Big Damn Day for the amount of money they were willing to donate. It's even better, if you think about it.

I have to say that I absolutely love you guys and your enthusiasm. Be assured that I'd share my bunk with any of you anytime. Well, in a totally friendly kind of way, of course. Except if you're hot and play your cards right.

heh, you know, you're right. That survey we have on this website did say 40% of people were willing to give $100 or more :-p

just to let everyone know, i have a chance to to see guns n' roses in NYC May 17th...but since I can't juggle too much at once, i've decided to use my G n'R money to firefly.

that's right...i'm sacrificing here. But hey, guns n roses may never perform in public ever again but i'll do my best to see firefly on the screen again!

You are my hero now.
Seriously, that is sacrifice.
SHOWER THIS MAN IN FLOWERS!

Hey, we should take pictures of ourselves with the copy (or copies, preferrably) of Serenity we purchased on the Big Damn Day and collect them on a website. If that would be humanly possible.

I have been a browncoat for over a year and this is only my 2nd time typing anything. I am hopeful that I will not come over like a complete idiot, horrible shyness so be kind. I have a question. Has anyone addressed the possible problem of supply vs. demand. Most retailers have had Serenity on the shelf for 6 months by the time that this event takes place. This may or may not be a problem in urban areas but if we are realistic they will probally only have 2 to 3 on the shelf and then re-supply as these are sold. A one day rush on this one movie could cause a number of Browncoats to not be able to get a copy. If every Browncoat wants to be counted have we worked up any other suggestions?

O.K. that was my post, if this has been addressed previously and I just missed it. Please forgive me :blush

Hey there, nice to see we got you to write again...
The answer to your question is simple: We all order Serenity from Amazon. Every order will be registered. They probably WILL have supply problems, but that's just the beauty of it!
Hope to see you around more!

Buy the HD-DVD too ;)

I have a cunning plan also! A co-worker's parents have wallabies on their block (the bouncey things, not the brick factories in yellow jersies) I'm so tempted to abduct one, paint the Serenity logo on it and release it in the city mall on June 23rd - after calling a news crew of course. Anyone got a big black van we can borrow for the release? =)

I'm fairly new here, but I'm MORE than willing to do whatever you need. I don't know what all is already taken care of, but I'm positive you can use more help. I can do graphics, I can do the blogging bit (although I don't quite know what all that entails). As we speak I'm heading around to Myspace, LJ, and other non-Firefly related boards I'm a member of to spread the word. Just let me know and I'm there.

The "Only at Amazon" plan is changing as we speak, since we have to think about the little retailers who would be pissed off if we took all of our business to Amazon as 11th Hour so rightfully pointed out.
So I guess the new plan is - try to buy it in a small store, or any store, and if you can't get one there or don't have the time, order it from wherever you like.
I think that's the new plan. Anyone correct me if it isn't.

Since I plan on buying 5 copies, anyways, I'll get them from different sources, but at least one is gonna be from Amazon.

This thread is getting a might big, could FollowMal or Kaele or Max start a new one (with a quick summary of what has been decided and what not, and the website, and DIGG etc. to start it off)?

Hi everyone, I'm a bit of a fresh browncoat (only discovered the verse after Serenity came out on DVD), but I am hooked.

I have been popping by this site now and then but thought it was about time I registered and added to this thread.

I think "Find Serenity - June 23rd" is a really good slogan, it has mystery, intrigue, the promise of adventure... people see that, they instantly want to know what it's about!

Dunno what I will manage to do for the event, but I will definately be buying Serenity on DVD, I already own it, but I'd do pretty much anything to get more of the firefly 'verse. Heck maybe I'll buy two!

Is everyone in the same country (I'm in UK) going to buy it from the same chain? So that one place gets phonomenally high sales? If so let me know. I notice someone thinks small retailers will be annoyed but, if every shops sells 10, thats unimpressive, if one shop sells 100,000 (no idea what figure would be impressive for a days sales), then it's more noteworthy, and will be at the top of that shops charts. And isn't the point of the organisation to make it as noticeable as possible?

I'm already working towards our goal of spreading the word, last night I stuck on firefly while my housemate was playing World of Warcraft, and after a while the computer was off, and he was watching episode after episode . I also convinced a mate to buy Serenity before he knew anything about it, and he loved it! Does anyone actually dislike firefly/serenity after actually seeing it?

Let's re-light the firefly on the 23rd of June fellow browncoats

The entity we want to take notice the most is Universal. Since they're the official corporation, and are keeping tabs on the sales figures for the Serenity DVD... 100,000 units is pretty much the same to them whether it came from one outlet, or ten, or more. A sale is a sale.

However, it will make a difference to retailers who'll appreciate being included in this HUGE buying frenzy. If we shut out so many medium to small retailers in favor of buying from Blue Sun... err, I mean Amazon, then we risk stirring up resentment with the very folks we want on our side.

Plus, the more retailers that sell out of the Serenity and Firefly DVDs will have to reorder... and it's very likely they'll reorder more than their usual amount after it becomes evident that interest in FF/S keeps building. So we'll get the benefit of great sales, PLUS a higher than normal reorder rate from a wide range of retailers.

Wow. That's all I can say. i can not believe how amazing this is! A Serenity/Firefly day would be SOOOOO AMAZING!!!! I am DEFINITELY spreading the word as much as I can, I want the Browncoats to take over the world.

In a non-evil, non-sinister way of course......

But seriously, this is amazing and if Fox/Universal don't realise the amount of support Browncoats can give, well... They're in for one heck of a surprise!

I don't even know if that is possible, but could we send a newsletter to everyone registered here? Some of the Browncoats who just sort of lost interest could be "reactivated" with new motivation.
I'm sure they won't mind ONE e-mail, even if it could be considered spam. If they registered here in the first place, they'll understand.

Joss made that decision, not us. Let me assure you though, I have relatives who were affected by WWII (both US Navy and victims in Germany) and my husband's grandfather has a particular tattoo of numbers on the inside of his arm. I can promise that there is no affiliation with any form of genocide here.

Kaele, the concern has been brought up in other threads, and not just by me.

The fact is that using the phrase "one plan, one army of Browncoats" could turn people off to the message we're trying to get across; Which is, as you pointed out, LOVE. Not about armies, which are about death and destruction.

But as 11Hour likes to point out, what the hell do I know? I'm just a newbie who was so utterly turned off by the early fan marketing for Firefly and Serenity that I didn't bother to see it until my boyfriend dragged me to it. Which, I think, means that I have a different perspective to bring to the table.

The point IS and REMAINS-

The word "Serenity" means nothing to those who don't know it. Neither does "Firefly"- Serenity is a monestary and Firefly is an insect. I suggest SHOWING, not telling- Check out the banner thread for 'show- don't tell' examples.

The phrase "one plan, one army of Browncoats" is going to turn off some people who we would MUCH rather be making fans out of.

Unfortunatetly, there seems to be alot of Blind-Leading-The-Blind mentality going on and not alot of common sense happening. The phrase was agreed on by a few and now we're stuck with it.
Again, we'll have to use Show-don't-tell techiques to get people to want to learn more.

I'm not trying to be counterproductive. I'm trying to be a voice of reason. Sadly, it seems reason is in fairly short supply in the heat of battle.
I've already stopped posting to the other thread, and I'll cease posting to this one as well.

You still have my support and don't think for a moment that I would give up my Browncoat. I just think that sometimes one has to make a stand for what's right, and doing things that are counterproductive to our goal just don't seem right to me.

On the argument of a slogan --

It's not as if we're taking out a TV spot for the superbowl here. I think we can afford to have multiple slogans, just as the 'verse is associated with "Can't Take The Sky From Me" as well as "Can't Stop The Signal" and "The Future is Worth Fighting For". In the spirit of independence I think anyone who wants to start up a website for this, is more than welcome, and however they'd like to refer to it, well that's their business as well. I don't think we need a central alliance here, we're Browncoats. Ultimately, it's the date that matters, and we're all shooting for the same day with the same basic mission. How each individual browncoat wants to go about it should be welcomed. Just my thoughts.

All that said, my volunteering for the "offical" website seems silly. :P

I would support using "One day. One movie. Thousands of fans." when addressing the general public in press releases, letters to the editor, non-FF websites, etc. "On June 23rd, we aim to misbehave" should be included as well, IMO.

These initial stages will focus on rallying Browncoats, though, and I think that using FF-specific phrases will be more effective for that purpose.

BTW, I changed "show" to "movie" because the plan is for everyone to buy Serenity DVDs. People who are unfamiliar with the 'verse might get confused if the slogan does not convey the action that is being taken.

Also, there is a new thread about the June 23rd project: http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=19910

The last line loses the "one" alliteration, and may detract from the call to action, which is to band together and buy the DVD or to hold charity screenings around the globe.

How about:

One day.

okay, well i'd liek to think of myself as part of the "creative thinking" process and i saw nothing wrong with the following slogan:

One day.
One plan.
One army of Browncoats.

On June 23rd, we aim to misbehave.

if one would knwo what a browncoat is, they'd have a good idea that it has to do with our 'verse and would make their decision there if they would want to get further information.

If one doesn't knwo what a browncoat is, this statements makes no sense to them other that there is a plan to do somthing on one particular day, which creates curiosity.

That's my rationale why I think this would be the correct phrase. While the word "fan" and "browncoat" isn't much of a change in the statement, "browncoat" is more distinctive and doesn't lead to any obvious conclusions, while "fan" certainly does, just not to what kind of fan.

we can break this appart but my question is, how much of an impact do you suppose will changing the slogan change? It doesn't seem like much. ANd to be honest, we're targeting browncoats here, not non-browncoats. We want people to know that it's for the firefly series, not have to wonder what the bloody hell the person is refering to.

just my .02

and as far as multiple "visuals" well, we're going to have to be more specific than that. We already designated that detailed flash banners are too much to load for people on dialup connections so we're keeping it plain, simple and direct.

i'm glad people are steping up though, we have 2 months and we can't waste time on ideas that the majority don't like.

Just a side note: my friend is home from indiana for the week and I have off work for the next three days. I should be checking in but just in case, i may be M.I.A. untill friday.

The slogan needs to remain the same. I think too many people have gone forward with this idea and to begin to get creative in that regard could cause more problems then not.

I like one army of browncoats...it sums up what everybody is. Thousands? This does not indicate a large base for me..it could be any number. Coming together as fans is what this day is going to be about. So One Army of Browncoats seems most appropriate.

I do like the term "mission", it goes well with the "army" terminology. Plans seem to be associated with a smaller group, but a mission has the sense of determination and a larger amount of people.

, then? The "plan" part is because the post that quote is from was supposed to put the emphasis on the fact that there were too many plans by too many people around. As a slogan for the "outside", "mission" is better, I think.
I'm not gonna change my sig until someone decides already, though, since it will only create confusion if there's too many versions.

The debate just keeps rolling. I LOVE IT!! I love everyone's $0.02. I love that there are yet more newbies getting excited and enthused and passionate and ACTIVE.

I have to say, I kinda like the 'Thousands of fans'. It may lose the alliterative impact, but

(a)it could perhaps help to settle the discomfort some have with the potentially militant interpretations of the language used.
(SameErtia! Don't leave us! We need all inputs!)

(b)For me, it helps to convey the huge diversity of fans out there. Rather than one homogenous group, there are people out there with massively differing and intelligent views. It's one cause. It's a whole world of people. If you want an analogy, it's much like the crew of a certain little spaceship I could mention...

My oh my, you can tell today was a dissertation day. Such big words.

Maxrimstain...where have you gone to, my lovely? Could we set up a vote on this one too? And then at least it can be called a democratic decision.

This is a mission born out of love, peeps. Don't forget it.

x

One day.
One plan.
One army of Browncoats.

On June 23rd, we aim to misbehave.

I love it too! The creative process is just that. A process. And since we're a committe, well, you know how painful that can be.

I'm game either way, but my fave is now:

One day. One mission. One army of Browncoats.

That's nice and all, but we are not here because of the things in which we differ, but the one we have in common.
"Army" sounds more determined than "thousands", because the latter implies just what you say... differing views. Well, our views may differ on a great many things, but not the one that matters for this - we all want the continuation of Firefly.
Besides, Universal doesn't care about massively differing and intelligent views, they want a faceless mass buying what they're selling.

Well I'm certainly not one of the Big Damn leaders, but I like the slogan "One day. One plan. One army of Browncoats. On June 23, we aim to misbehave." I understand the Brownshirt connection, but I certainly don't think it's the first thing that would jump into someone's head. But I also agree that there's nothing wrong with having multiple slogans, so long as they get the point across.

I aim to misbehave.

BROWNCOAT1

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Okay, maybe it is just me, but there seems to be a lot more focus & debate on wording and sigs than anything else right now. I know we need to be unified in our slogans and all, but are we losing sight of what we are trying to do?

We could be, Browncoat1, but I don't think so at this point still.

There is so much debate because we ARE Browncoats I think... we're an ornery bunch, given to thinking our own way. Which under normal circumstances is a good thing.. but this is a time for coming together. We need to decide on this slogans and this name for this day and get on with it. I for one have looked at the task I have in front of me and it is a mighty big task, and I want to do it right... because I want my shiny ship and crew to come back to us all and I want to do right by my fellow Browncoats.

I've stayed out of the debate so far, not wanting to muddy the waters further, waiting until I saw some consesus... instead I've seen increasing measures of non-love on the board.. and that's not usual for this place... this is one of the friendliest places I know. Sadly, the last week, it's grown a little strained. Now, I know the process is always hard... but it's been some time now... I think it's time to come together behind the folks doing the leading and get busy.

There has been much debate about the "army of Browncoats" part of the sig. I am so proud to be a member of "the army of Browncoats". We took the name from the army that Mal fought so bravely with. Joss named them that. This gives us a feeling of unity and being a part of a brave fight. We use the military analogies around here all the time, with our encouragement to each other to hold the line, and to stand firm. I think it's appropriate to continue this. It unifies us when we have to do a "mission" like this. For that is what it is... a mission. The plan has been hatched, we need to start the mission stage.

Well, I've gone on long enough, I think I've made my 2 cents clear...

I am behind the leaders of this mission with all my strength and my heart. I am also in support of the use of the sig that says

One day
One mission
One army of Browncoats

On June 23rd, we aim to misbehave!

I also think that fireflyday has won with a resounding victory in the votes, much to my dismay as a matter of fact.. as I thought it ought to be tied to the movie and to our beloved ship's name. But I will go with the vote.

So I've written a book here. Didn't mean to, but thought I ought to mix in this too.

One day.
One mission.
One army of Browncoats.

On June 23rd, we aim to misbehave!

Wasn't FireflyDay disqualified because it was taken, and it's in December?
All this slogan fuzz is making me confused.

Y'all been busy over the weekend! Just found this thread.

*ahem* "I solemnly swear to spend a ton of money on officially licensed Serenifly goods, especially the BDM, on June 23. I further swear that I will give away all such goods purchased on said date to either friends or friendly strangers, with an explanation of what we are trying to accomplish and how much their participation will be appreciated.*

Welcome aboard oldfogey, glad to have you with us. Numbers are very important to what we are trying to do here, probably the most important thing. We just have to keep the signal up and running and this will be a success.
