That is a good interview... although it definitely shows the disparity between Joss and Millar. With apologies to any Millar fans out there, he's a terrible writer. I tried reading Ultimate X-Men and I couldn't get through the first volume; the clichés, stereotypes and gratuitous violence just got too painful.

And I know Joss refuses to work with FOX, but the possibilities of him directing X3... gaaahh, that would have been awesome. The fact that his unused script for the first X-Men movie presumably still exists somewhere still gnaws away at my soul every so often. I really would like to read that eventually.

I liked this interview a lot because both of them touch on so much issues about X-MEN the comics and the movies. I was reading a lot about both of the X-MEN movies and everyone and thing involved with it. I didn't know that in the first movie, Storms "toad hit by lightning" line was one of only two contributions Whedon made to the final film. Oddly enough, it was the one line in the whole film that I thought sounded false and cheesy. The other one was the much superior interaction between Logan and Scott. "Hey, it's me.";"Prove it.";"You're a dick."

And I like how Joss described his take on Xavier as NotPicard. It actually made me realize one major difference between Xavier and Magneto. The roles of Picard and Charles Xavier are so similar that no one raised an eyebrow when Patrick Stewart was cast. But it seemed like a no brainer thing so it didn't take much for us to accept him as Xavier which kinda makes us fans lazy in our appreciation of the role.

But Ian McKellan as Magneto I think is appreciated more by the fans because it's a tough role that he did so well. And I remember when I went into the first LORD OF THE RINGS movie, I was wondering "Can he pull of being Gandalf?" since it's a complete 180 from Magneto. But he frickin BECAME Gandalf. So after the first two RINGS flicks, X2 came out and now it was the opposite. After seeing him for two years as this noble wizard, would I be able to buy him as one of the most powerful mutant in the X universe and the baddest of the bad guys. But lo and behold, he was able to do it fully and completely. To be able to be identified as both one of the noblest good guys and one of the baddest bad guys in sci-fi/fantasy and being able to pull them off completely is a Herculean acting feat, and McKellan is able to do it with dignity and grace.

As per X3 and Brett Ratner and all that, like I said, I'm willing to give it the benefit of a doubt. And I think it's because he's not Bryan Singer. Fans loved what he did with the first two, so it's no surprise that they're protective of him. Of course what people fail to realize was that when Bryan was first announced, people had almost the exact same reaction. And it's not like we actually WANT X3 to be a shitty flick. We're all hoping and praying that it'll be fucking kick ass.

It'll be the best of both worlds if both X3 and SUPERMAN RETURNS both turn out to b the pinnacle of comic book movies.

"There's only one "Return" ok, and it ain't "of the King", it's "of the Jedi."

"Maybe we should start calling your friend 'Padme' because he loves 'Mannequin Skywalker' so much, Right? (imitating robot) Danger...danger...my name is Anakin...my shitty acting is ruining saga."

Excerpt of internet teaser for CLERKS 2.

legolad,
Try reading Ultimates by Mark Millar, it is one of his best works much better than ultimate X-men. If you do not like Ultimates then you probably won't like anything Millar does.

STORYMARK

I don't recall too much anti-Singer talk when he was announced as director for X-Men. He was still riding pretty high on The Usual Suspects. I'm willing to give Ratner the benefit of a doubt, but Singer went into X-Men having directed one of my favorite films ever (Suspects) which was tonally similar to X-Men. Ratner's best film to date, IMO, is still Rush Hour, which while fun, isn't quite the right tone for X-Men. And his dramas (Red Dragon, Family Man) havn't impressed me much. I hope he proves me (and other naysayers) wrong.

Of course, I would have loved it if Joss had done 3, but there was no way that was going to happen (though I believe the impass was more about the script/schedule than any Joss/Fox animosity).

Oh god I agree. That was the one line in the film that drove me insane. But, later on I read that Joss "imagined [it] as a lighthearted, offhand line." Now I don't know about anyone else, but I think that tone would of worked so much better for that line. The delivery of the line was just so off. Or maybe its just my hatred for Halle Berry in the role that made that line so bad... hmmm.

I agree with Joss that they should "Take a few characters and really fuck them up, instead of the everybody-in-the-pool monster epic they (hopefully) have pulled off." That was my biggest beef with X-2. Too many charachters to cover so you get less time to really delve deep into any relationships or charachters. So I preferred the first X-Men a bit more. But I am still very excited for X-3. I just really hope this isn't the end of the X-men movies (though I heard there will be a Wolverine spin-off movie with Jackman), or that it doesn't suck so much that the franchise goes into submission. Because hell if there isn't a million things they could still do. I just find the X-men films as the few interesting and good movies in the entire comic/"super hero" genre thus far.
