Ok, I don't know if I should have posted this here or somewhere else - but either way here goes.

Just wondering, since firefly/serenity fans happen to be all over the place, how many FIFA WORLD CUP fans are out there. Who will be watching? Who are you rooting for? Who do you think will take it?

Personally, I will be behind the US team as long as they last. Out of sympathy for the rest of the world, I'm rooting against Brazil in every game.

Even though the US is ranked 4th in the world, I think that is a misleading ranking. I'm not sure they will make it out of the first round. But I'll be hoping, praying, lighting little candles at the church. Italy and the Chez will be hard to beat.

Should be an exciting Cup though. It would be pretty cool to see a bunch of fans with Serenity/Firefly gear to compliment their team gear. Imagine the publicity the world cup brings...

anyway, any other soccer/futbal/football/etc. fans out there?

Thanks

Whoaaaa, jmb.....

Soccer is even more controversial than politics...

A very very dangerous thread...

Actually, I have tickets for the German Cup-Finals in Berlin next Saturday (Frankfurt vs. Munich) and eventually I have the chance, to get on the television-show thats broadcasted afterwards. Just in case, I need a gorram ff-shirt for that event…

Talkin about the world cup: Brazil is (as always) the favourite. Argentina, England and the Netherlands have also very good teams. But I think Italy might do it this time. I´m not sure what to expect from our team (germany). Last time, I would´ve bet a fortune on the fact, that they´re going to be out after round one. As expected, they played horrible most of the time and went straight to the final! So I really don´t wonder any more, why every one seems to hate us… (Hey Brits!)

I´d like to see the US-team to make some surprises, but I don´t believe so. There´s Italy, Ghana and the Czech Republic in your group making group E one of the hardest ones. But the great thing about soccer is, that you can´t predict the outcome. Anything can happen!

Arabikum --

Yeah, i love the controversy.

Germany, eh? I was secretly rooting for them in '02. I went to a bar in Cleveland at 6 am. There were about 100 Brazilians (All speaking Porteguese) there and around 10 German fans. I endedup cheering for Brazil. Sorry...

yeah, the US is in a tough group. I think they can beat those teams, but I don't know if they will. It certainly won't be easy. If the US can make a good showing, I'll be happy. I think Italy can pull through if they stop dropping back and playing defense so much (their trademark). Italy and Ireland are my second favorites and since Ireland didn't make it...

I'm a little jealous of your tickets. Did you get tix for the World Cup games? I've been scheduling my summer work schedule around the cup games!! Ssshhh... dont' tell the boss.

I'd like to see this thread, or others during the WC playoffs. Could be fun to go back and forth when the teams are playing.

What do you think about Mehmet Scholl not playing in the Cup?

i suppose i should be behind england... but lets face it, it'll never happen. footballs really big in england (i mean bigger than i think it is in the us) but im not that huge a fan. having said that when england do play i have a tendency to get embarrassingly excited if they win... think american football looks more interesting! though maybe just a wimpy version of rugby =D

whats the biggest sport in the us? i thought it was baseball or something. in england its got to be football, but increasingly rugby/cricket since we won the world cup and the ashes!

note: soccer is football in england... in case you didnt know

Soccer is getting bigger in the US, but I'd say football (american), baseball, and basketball are the big three. For some reason, a lot of americans have a hatred for soccer - i think they see it as a threat to the big 3. I don't know why soccer can't coexist with the other sports in their minds. I think some don't understand it.

They want high scores and have trouble appreciating the nuances of play. Also, it is unlike other american sports. BB, FB, and BB are all coach driven sports that have specific plays, time outs, and time to go get a Coke and chips. Soccer is player driven, no time out or set "plays" although we all know the small field/big field plays that happen, and no commercial breaks. Different mentality to the sport than the 3 big american sports. That's not an attempt to say any are better or worse - just different. I love american football and I dig on the NBA playoffs. But, I loooove soccer. I love my soccer channel!!

Either way - its popularity is growing.

WHOOPS

I think Argentina will do well this year (and being english that hurts). Germany wont do well at all they have a young team so maybe in a few years that will get better. The suprise packages could be the African team cant remember if it was Camaroon or Senegal.

And all said and done im hoping for England Vs Brazil final England win 2:1.
