hello - new here.

My roomate and I had a Firefly marathon last night. So, I've got a couple of questions re: Jayne that I had never considered before.

Question One: Ariel

Jayne changes the plans and tells Simon that they have to go - even though they have 20 minutes left.

Was this because of Jayne's double-cross, or was this because Jayne changed his mind about the double-cross and wanted to get Simon/River out before the Feds arrived?

It's just a bit unclear to us. Seems like he may have been a bit freaked about all the digging that was done in River's brain - and so decided that turning them in wasn't a good idea. Then when they got caught, he still tried for the reward anyway.

Question Two: Jayne/Kaylee

Anyone else think that, given enough time, Jayne would have revealed that he had a major crush on Kaylee?

His actions in the pilot seem to suggest that he might have, or at least that the writers wanted to keep it open.

1) his gynocologist comments
2) his watching through the window during the operation
3) his immediate dislike of Simon - obvious class issues aside.

I just liked the character so much i had to believe that even though he wouldn't be above trying for the reward that he wasn't scummy enough to go through with it. And i'm not sure if his crush on Kaylee or the pretty boy doctor-but i have too many gay friends and that's the view they espouse maybe i'm just be channelling

Good questions. I thought it was part of his plan. By cutting the session short he had time to move River and Simon to the meeting spot.

Oh and Rita, there is no way that Jayne is gay.
I don't know why, horny goat that he his I don't think that he sees Kaylee in sexual way (more like a little sister).

Jayne loves Kaylee, but as a big brother. Period. Jayne is NOT gay.Period.
I am perfectly willing to beleive that he had a change of heart regarding selling out River and Simon. He really wants to be a good guy. Thats why I love his charchter so much. With pretty much everyone else its -what you see is what you get. With the exception of Book of course. Maybe that is why they are friends in spite of being so different. I am dying to find out what Books story really is. ANd I know the movie will give Jayne a chance to be the real hero I know he can be. Speaking of Firefly marathon- just 2 more days. I am giddy with anticipation.

She understands, she doesn't comprehend

As much as I love, love, love, Firefly, a part of me isn’t completly crushed that it got cancelled.

Please don’t hurt me for that, I’m fragile.

It’s not that I wouldn’t want it to go on, I do, and yay for the movie, but I like that the FF series on TV is somewhat self contained for us. Even with the movie, or it’s return to television, the first episodes will always be one long story.

For some people they’ll always see Jayne and River as the perfect couple, Book as a Shepard or an Alliance spy, and Simon as gay (though in all my fantasies he‘s totally hot for me). I have a fear that if FF had gone on for ten seasons, though that would be octo-wonderfulmus, I would see that Book is an Alliance spy, and I’d be upset. I wouldn’t get to see Simon and Kaylee hook up and live happily ever after, and I’d be sad. I like that we’re all able to fill in the blanks exactly the way we want because we don‘t know.

Has anyone else notice how much flak he takes from the rest of the crew?

I can buy that. I was just torn whether it was that, or whether it was some sort of romantic thing. In other episodes (Our Mrs. Reynolds, Jaynestown, HoG), Jayne DID seem to have an interest in a different kind of woman than Kaylee.
It was just an idea I was throwing around, and my roomate picked up on it too, so I thought I would throw it out there as food for thought.

I totally agree about this - I was really surprised when I saw on the net all the gay jokes/comments about Simon. That seriously never occured to me. But the older I get, the more I appreciate any true gentleman that can be that way without being condescending or sexist. That's how I saw Simon, anyway - a modern gentleman.

I didn't pick up on this possibility until someone else mentioned it - but I think they could have easily gone down that route.

Jayne and Kaylee would make a nice couple I think. Yeah okay, maybe I'm a bit of a Jayne/Kaylee shipper...

Book: “A duel?”
Wash: “With swords?”
Simon: “The Captain's a good fighter, he must know how to handle a sword?”
Zoe: “I think he knows which end to hold.”

I have to step up with you Kayt. There is also a small part of myself that feels a similar sort of pleasure knowing that certain questions probably won't be answered... leaving it up to my imagination has been great. Although every little extra thing that I find out makes me very happy.

You guys... sheez. I guess its the half full/half empty thing, but I want more Firefly. I know you're not saying you don't, Kayt, and I appreciate that the mystery is more fun than the solution, but Joss would always stay four or five steps ahead of us in that department, don't you think? I haven't been an ME fan for long, but my impression is that for every answer they reveal they stir up three new questions.

But I get what you're saying. The premature cancellation of something so promising gives it a bittersweet mythic quality. Score one for optimism.

Afterthought: In my darker moments I sometimes think its fortunate it ended prematurely because I just can't imagine how they could maintain the level of quality they'd established. But then I was thinking that after every episode when they aired and they just kept getting better and better.

I was told once that Kaythryn always takes point, so I'm stepping up behind her and slightly to the left. I like that the series is a story in and of itself, but I'm also with Maniac - every new bit of information is like an epiphany, particularly the actors' insights into their characters. It's helping to fill the abyss that Firefly left behind.
