The reason I love Serenity and crew (besides feeling like family) is that FF/Serenity appeals to all the role-playing fantasies I had as a kid growing up. Three of my all time favorite games was playing pirates/spaceman/cowboys. Joss Whedon knowingly/unknowingly has successfully captured all of these in one Big Damn Enjoyable movie (and the series too). Thanks Joss for forever capturing that part of my childhood!!!!

I agree, SimonB, Joss sure knows his genres and how to play with them :)

The whole Sci-Fi/ Western was one of those things where after watching a couple episodes, I wished I'd come up with it. (Though, I guess, to be fair, there's been other movies/ shows like that too. Just well... not near as good :)

Firefly sorta hit on just about everything I look for in good sci-fi and to a certain extent westerns, alot of it things that I can't quite put into words.

That, combined with a great cast and crew with an obvious chemistry... well, how could I not love it? I've said it before, I don't think I had any choice in the matter :)

WHOOPS

Its very orginal, the characters rule, the storys are amazing, the comedy is excellent, the relationships are a great, erm......the graphics are excellent and mind blowing, the "bad" guys are just as good as the main characters and i think thats it.

don't love, she'll shake you off sure as a turnin' of worlds. Love keeps her in
the air when she oughtta fall down. Tells you she's hurtin' 'fore she keens.
Makes her a home." Mal

America loves a winner!

Space whores and a naked Summer Glau. Who needs any other reasons?

People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss

Well, the western/pirates/space stuff had a lot to do with it. Plus the film noir, the jump out and go boo, suspense, the snappy dialogue, the pretty men, the really nice nekkid Mal...but I digress.
I loved the western aspect most, having Serenity be its own microcosm of a western town...but with a Joss-eyed view. The town marshall and deputy--who were on the losing side of a civil war--are crooks. The most respectible person aboard is the equivilant of the local madam. The town preacher, who isn't afforded much respect, may have a nasty dark past. The gunslinger lives in town and ocasionally saves the day as well as someytimes trying to sell it to the highest bidder. The town doctor is a fugitive as is his young sister. The young farm girl is a whiz mechanic who helps keep the 'town' running.
But all this would have been nothing...without the right people playing the parts. What I really fell in love with was the cast and their obvious enjoyment of what they were doin and how easy it was to convince me that they actually were going through all we were shown.
So...my longwinded answer is: our BDH and the folks who portray them.

I'm a very moral person, and I liked serenity-firefly because I think it said what more people today need to hear. Mainly, its bad to eat people allive, kill other peoples friends or brain wash young girls for scientific research.

I also love the down trodden soldier thing, the big brother thing, the father type role that mal has, the dumb big brother role jayne has..... What can I say?

Well, the reason I love Firefly is pretty much that, Love. The series (and the BDM) has that overwhelming feeling of family and closness that few series ever get. When I watch the series I can feelwhat the crew feels, and I can live out my dream of flying into space. Also the series makes me happy, when I feel sad I can always put on the DvD and just let it carry me away and fill me with a joy for life.

You can’t stop the Signal.
Keep spreading the word about Firefly!

I love it because it's very like the space western animes that I love. Things like Trigun, Cowboy Bebop and especially Outlaw Star are very like Firefly/Serenity and that's great. It deserves more seasons than Buffy or Angel ever had (they were good, but Firefly showed more potential than either of their first seasons did).

The 'verse the Whedon created is infinately interesting, and allows for characters that are just a little off their tilt in different, and endearing ways.
It's witty, it's imaginative, and it deals with things that matter, often in subtle ways.
And then there's the fact that the Serenity provides a haven offworld where any combination of people can be together, and any adventure can land in their laps.
I'm a Neal Stephenson (sci-fi writer) fan, and it's fun to see some of the ideas he'd put out in Snowcrash and The Diamond Age come into being (i.e China and the future).
And lastly, who doesn't dream of traveling the 'verse with a crew you can (mostly ^-^) trust your life with seeking work to stay afloat but inevitably finding adventure?

Firefly is just so fundamentally loveable. I haven't met a single person who's seen and disliked.

There's so much to like, the script, the acting, the gorgeous cast with amazing characters, the strong women, the roguish men. It has gritty humour, and nail biting drama. It's the tv series equivelent of Han Solo.

What I think really appeals beyond that though is the believablity. In our world the uber corp society we have, the rich have all the power and aren't ready to share, Firefly reflects this. The governments of the world are getting scarily 1984, what we in England call the Nanny state is prevelant. This is also reflected in Firefly. The firefly 'verse is more believable than most sci-fi, cos we can see our worlds future in it. If we don't change course that is.

Characters: The most interesting, dynamic characters ever to appear on television. More than any other show, they became real in your mind, and you shared in their happiness and sorrow. Each character balanced the other in a way that made for absolutely perfect storytelling, each one offering a unique perspective on any given situation. People who seem very unlikely to come together as a team, and yet, they do come together, and seem more a family than any literal, related families on other shows.

Dialogue: What other show can completely alter the way you speak and converse with the world long after you've watched it? What other show has conversations that haunt your dreams and phrases that enter your mind randomly throughout the day? Basically, there is none.

Setting: Firefly was perhaps the only science fiction television show to make any sense whatsover (( and I am a huge fan of a diverse selection of sci-fi -- written and filmed, so that is saying a lot. )), showcasing the people and stories that slip through the cracks of the intergalactic wars of other shows/series, ignoring the big generals and politicians and showing the lives of ordinary folk. Firefly showed us a future that was more likely than anything else we've seen -- same old humanity, hundreds of years in the future. Sure, we've got advanced technology, but when hasn't there been a poor and middle class that couldn't afford it? Traveling out into space is no easy game, and things are going be rough, especially when you're creating whole new worlds -- things are going to suck for a whole lot of people, and this is definitely something Firefly nailed. We've still got corrupt governments, wars, violence, conflict...still the divide of the "haves" and the "have-nots". Everything is the same, just the setting has changed, and were we ever to start a new world, it would be very much the same.

Sound/Music: Who would have thought that a cancelled television program would be the first sci-fi put to film that actually acknowledges science -- there's no gorram sound in a vacuum!!! Why doesn't anyone acknowledge this? Even Battlestar Galactica, which finds so much influence from Firefly in the effects department, ignores this. Anyway, beyond that, the music....ah, the music. Greg Edmonson did as much for that show as any of the writers or actors -- he breathed a life and spirit to that show that made it, in fact, the only TV show with a score that this Sound major can remember. Every single music cue on that show evokes a specific emotion in me and brings back that specific scene. Not to mention that Greg was brave enough to write a score that did not fit the typical paradigm of TV music, actually becoming part of the setting itself, mixing musical cultures, and in particular, using instruments that are portable enough to be effective on border words. Actually, it's Greg Edmonson's work that made me actually think of pursuing work in TV music. Oh, and we can't forget Joss's theme -- probably the most memorable theme since...ever.

Cinemetography: I can't say enough about the visual effects company that decided to use a handheld camera effect on CG spaceships. Nothing else I've seen makes us actually feel like we're there (( and Battlestart Galactica uses the effect a little TOO much...Firefly was just right )) and adds a new layer of realism to the show. The same approach to the shooting of the show itself made you feel as if we're right there on the ship with the crew. I could keep going with the costume design, lighting, etc..but this is turning into an essay. Basically, there was not a single thing that I did not LOVE about Firefly.

Serenity on the other hand...well...it wasn't Firefly. I LOVE Firefly...I like Serenity.
