At first I was like "WTF"?
Then I read this:
http://www.cantstoptheserenity.com/disclaimer/
Now I think changing "Serenity Day" to Sept. 30th would give us two BWAH!s per year which is better than one.

From here out it could be Joss' B-day for charity
and then "Serenity Day" (Sept. 30th) for AGITATION.
Sounds like a plan with not too much 'if' coming off it.

Of course this is worth discussing as it impacts the very thing we all hold the dearest here... our 'verse and whether or not there will be a continuation of it. It also impacts us as a group of fans and whether or not we get the job done or not.

We should have a vote.. we are a democracy aren't we? I mean it's a little hard to tell.. what with the I say and I want and I will rhetoric but last I looked we were an Independent bunch of cusses. I think we need to get past the saluting and the cowtowing and think about what is the best way to get the job done.

I liked the shiny compromise we came up with today... why can't we do that.

Posting here may seem a little deal, but even that requires diverting time and energy from something else.
From the start of the "project", I've always tried to suggest simpleness, the presence of a leader, direction and focus.

I speak for myself alone, but if this project requires THIS KIND of debate (people worried that we "steal" their precious date...and us actually caring and replying to such worries!!!!), then I'M TOTALLY out of the present discussion.
Sorry, this isn't really what I like to do with my free time.

Hope you guys can still bring on the project.
I'll check in now and then...
If it actually happens -someday- I'll be in, I guess.

EDIT: Another thing. I followed that link and I read what that guy wrote. I found it DISTURBING.
He basically says he's better than us because he does "good", while organizers of the "so called Serenity Day" are "selfish".
People like this should really wake up and get over themselves.
I'd have MANY things to "teach" him too, but I'll just hush.

I'm sorry to see the efforts slow/die because of those ramblings.

I say keep it June 23. I'm not quite understanding why b!X is so upset. It isn't as if buying the DVD is going to take up so much of a person's day that they won't be able to go to one of his screenings. I thought about trying to get a charity screening here in Omaha but to be honest I just don't think I would be able to convince a theater to do it. I was looking forward to being able to do something even though it won't be possible for me to go to a one of the charity screenings.

I vote for september 30th.

I have by no means read every post in this thread as it got a bit much, but I read enough to understand the conflict with the guy who "called" June 23rd first.I think a date should just be set, like NOW, and then we could all start rallying the troops. And yes, we need more time.

I don't know about the US, but here in Norway June 23rd is summer holiday for students and such, so a day in September might be better for getting more people onboard.

I´d say keep it on June 23rd.

I´m afraid, nothing good will come out of having 3 extra months. And why not have 2 separate events on June 23rd ?! This isn´t “Charity-Screening-Day”, it´s “Joss´ Birthday”, and we´re free to do what we want. Just forget about joining efforts and let´s do the thing.

Those 3 extra months can be used to great advantage. During this Summer there are multiple Sci-Fi conventions which are outstanding opportunities to promote the campaign. That time can be used to recruit many new fans to the 'verse... and there would be enough time for them also to recruit friends, family, co-workers, etc., by September 30th.

The aim of Serenity Day is to achieve truly impressive DVD sales... something a lot better than a sales spike driven by fans that frequent the message boards. But an impressive sales result needs more lead-in time to promote.

If all that people want to achieve is a nice sales spike for the DVD, then yeah, the extra time is irrelevant. But if this effort is part of a campaign to demonstrate a big enough audience to warrant considering more Serenity, then the sales figures need to be substantial... and that needs time and persistence to make happen. As a veteran of many a guerilla marketing endeavor, I know this to be true.

I don't think b!x is saying he's better than anyone else -he's just describing the differences between the two efforts. One is for charity and another is for more movies. Describing an action for "more movies" as selfish is simply technical semantics. It's not personal.

A "Serenity Day" and a "Can't Stop the Serenity" day just gives us two days instead of one.... how can that be bad?

Bottom line -let people do what they want. Even if it's whine about other people. Worrying about a "fracture" in the Browncoats is silly IMO. If anyone is TRULY concerned about how we look to the world, best thing to do is refrain from bickering.

WOW, I finally went to bed last night at about 3am, thinking this had been kinda sorted out.
ssc anyone?
why argue when we can do everything?

june 23 the start of the ssc.- charity screenings, spiked dvd sales what every you like to mark the day.

Summer- time for shindigs my friends, bbq, and conventions. show around the dvd you brough on the 23, advertise the 30th. advertise anything and everything.

sep 30th- incourage everyone you recurited in the summer to buy today, increased sales over the summer hopefully ending with annother spike. which as well as thank you letters to universal im sure there appreciate this too.

Could we all come together under this one SSC banner? I'd like to think so.
remember im not saying anyone cant do anything, im saying we can all do everything!

Why not spend summer in serenity?
From the 23 of april to the 30th of september we aim to misbehave!

Ah, if only it were that easy... Don't make the mistake I made, thinking we are dealing with yet another "shiny happy Browncoats holding hands"- kinda guy. But I don't wanna start throwing hwai. I got piles of good, well-weighed aerodynamic turds at my disposal, don't get me wrong. But hwai splatters, so I'll stash it away for later instead, should it become neccessary.
Okay, that metaphor was quite disgusting, thank me very much. But it's also very poetic.
Anyways, we should deal with the situation at hand and try to find the best way to make everyone happy, idiot cousins of the Browncoat family included.

They're going for June 23rd.. They're featured in this months Wired, and have posted on the .org site to say they plan to organise something.

So we're currently on course for having 3 different factions of the fandom having 3 different events competing for different publicity for different reasons...

This is *NOT* presenting the fandom in a good way to Universal. This is *NOT* going to be about a sequel, or charity, or anything at this rate. It's going to turn into bad press. Which is never what this is about.

At the moment, I'd say there's actually little to no in fighting from the people in charge, but the events are just going to damage things for everybody. Which wasn't the idea anybody had.

In fact, the whole point of this was to be united and organise every Browncoat in a big way.
You think the BRA people might be interested in the campaign idea and join with us? I'm saying "join WITH us", not "join us", mind you.

And is B!x throwing a fit because of this?

Your right, maybe we should settle this once and for all, im thinking something along the lines of opening up three new threads, one for the 23 one for the 30th and one for the ssc. if you post in that thread your name will be counted as a vote, obviously no matter how many times you post you only get one vote. give it 2 maybe 3 days, and count up the post.

something needs to be descided, voting seems the only fair way. when times up we know what we are doing, and can get beind it.
if somepeople dont agreed with what ever wins, well thats voting for you.

I will set up the threads if people like this idea, but not other wise at the moment theres two many threads all over the place and its just getting confusing.

anyone one feel to comment?

Oh i dont know, maybe this is just confusing the matter further, and im damn sure it doesnt need anymore of that.

Dunno, to be honest, what Bix feels -- or if anybody has tried contacting the BrowncoatsRiseAgain folks.

I've been reading some of the other topics here and some of the mud slinging here is pretty tragic. I put out a press release for charity screenings of the movie yesterday, which appeared on US TV... It's probably the most publicity the movie has had lately. It's positive publicity, reaching the masses. And what is going on here? There's name calling and hair pulling.

Uh-huh. Whateva, like. All I'll say is people need to calm down, and decide what is going to help sell the franchise to the outside. If there's any way I can help with that, I will.

Nobody owns June 23, nobody is a better fan than anyone else. Don't cave in to "save the fandom" crap, that is ridiculous. As if you suddenly have to follow a bunch of rules because you love the show and want to share it with others.

The negative, condencending attitude in that Whedonesque thread really annoys me. It's THE site for Joss news though, and Joss frequently posts there himself, which is damn cool. But the people who post there aren't better fans than anyone else, and they act like they're in charge of all Joss fan projects or something. I say, don't give in to that shit.

Glad to see you are still around 'Tash. We've missed seeing you post here.

I agree w/ 'Tash, why change the date just because a few fans on another site are whinging. Ok, so they planned something "first" on the same date. So what? They don't own the rights to organizing a fan driven campaign on June 23rd. No reason why we should change the date.

So the plan as I see it is now to keep June 23rd. Celebrate Serenity with everybody else just as we planned by buying DVDs, sending letters, going to screenings, and what not. But we continue from there. We use this as a kick off for a campaign that leads into a second celebration for Serenity on September 30th. Thats more parties for everyone and more chances to spread the word. This way everybody wins. We celebrate Serenity Day on June 23rd. We hold a Serenity Summer Campaign starting from that day on. We have the Big Damn Anniversary (or whatever we call it) on September 30th. That's my suggested course of action.

One goal.
One plan.
One army of Browncoats.

On June 23rd, we aim to misbehave.

What about if June 23rd became like a kind of dry run to test the effectiveness of the campaign? Keep campaigning to have folks buy DVDs on that date (Happy Birthday Joss!), afterward, we can see what the sales figures ended up being. Then the battle plan will become a lot clearer. Either the numbers will be really great (don't mean to be negative, but doubt that truly "awesome" numbers can happen in such a short amount of time), or the sales will be a lot less than all the great expectations were hoping for. But at least some "real world" results will be available.

Then folks can get geared up for Serenity Day on September 30th. Either with confidence that we're already coming from a strong place, or the cold, hard realization that there's still a whole lotta promotin' to be done.

If the "test run" thing sounds like a good idea, then it can be named something without the word "Serenity" in it. That will help delineate the DVD buying campaign from the Serenity Now/Equality Now charity screenings. Some peace can be achieved it the names of the different events really are "different".

Sometimes an army has to have a few skirmishes to test itself, then they can come back for the big battle even stronger.

11th Hour

P.S.

For anyone who hasn't done guerilla marketing, let me just say it can be a tough battle. It's fun because you're doing it with your browncoat buddies, but going out there into the big world, and talkin' up folk who won't initially have interest in what you have to say, is a lot to overcome. There's a lot of things out there trying to grab peoples' attention... takes a lot of persistence and good energy to make a dent.

You can get already existing fans excited about an idea, but getting other folk convinced is a different matter. It will take time to create the kind of effect fans want for Serenity Day.

Now this is an idea, and a very sound one too.

I agree that keeping June 23rd & using it as a test date is a very good idea. It will allow us to get the steps in place to organize this event & get our feet wet with implementing them. It will give us the experience we need to make a September 30th a big success.

I'm all for it.

Gossi,

Thank you for posting and for stating the obvious need to change the date. As you can see from reading this thread, there were folks yesterday that intelligently and with a great desire for peace came up with a solution in the Serenity Summer Campaign. I think that plan covers everything nicely and would hope that you would like it to.

I hope that the leader of this Serenity Day thing... Kaele.... can be persuaded to change this into the shiny solution for us all, versus the one day has to be no matter what militant movement that it is now.

Just you posting helped. Thank you!

For whatever it's worth, I think changing the Serenity Day event to the Summer Serenity Campaign culminating on September 30 is a great idea for the reasons that many others have mentioned: more time, differentiating the events, and being able to build a sustained, growth-oriented march to the 9/30 date.

I think this is an excellent proposal.

I am very proud of us, Purplepebble... yesterday was a study in coming together and wanting to find a good solution and then when it seemed we had THIS solution, folks threw a party.. it was fun. My heads still a little fuzzy with that virtual Irish creme. Heh.

But we still have to get the leader of the Serenity Day behind this idea fully... she is still posting that she will do June 23rd, she sort of co-opted the Serenity Summer Campaign and said she liked it, but she also said a lot of stuff about an army and attacking and defending and such and I don't know how that figures into this plan.

I hope she sees this and sees that it will be good for us all...by all, I mean literally us all.

i can't understand all the hullabaloo here. joss' bd is the 23rd. some people are celebrating it by having screenings. people who can't organize screenings are buying the dvd's and donating them to various organizations. and some people want to do it again in sept. sounds great to me. not everyone can make a screening, not everyone can afford to buy dvd's. you do what you can, and be thankful someone has the skills to organize whichever venue you want to participate in. so buy the dvd, or go to a screening, or do both.

My vote is for whatever Kaele decides. Period. What I have to say next is for 11th Hour. On one of your 12 or more posts you chastise someone for being combative. Let's review some of your finer quotes throughout this whole thread.

1. That was you trying to be polite? Dude, needs work.

2. Your post misses a lot of the points

3. An informed opinion is a lot more valuable to a discussion

4. Are Browncoats so fragile and easily discouraged that a date change will collapse the environment?

5. The whole army metaphor is getting a little creepifying here.

6. Everyone, who is this everyone of whom you speak?

7. You forgot the part where the sky was falling.

8. There's just so much "I" in those statements.

9. Why is it a big deal to revise a date on a poster?

10. And since this thread is a place to vote.

11. And I also don't want to expend more energy explaining what has already been posted.

Okay. When you speak like this but accuse others of being combative you look kinda silly (at least to me). And for not wanting to expend more energy explaining, you posted a million times! Hello! My answer to your question in #4 is: Ask B!X on Whedonesque. As for #9 - Some people don't have all the free time you seem to have. They have a family and responsibilities outside of this little venture. So don't be so critical. Cause that was all I got out of your posts. That kind of tone would be more appreciated on Whedonesque. Yes I'm pissed. Seems like all the big guns are a little whiny. As you mentioned this is a place to vote (although I myself have now kinda gotten off the beaten path). Please feel free to flame me.

11th Hour has chimed in above saying it's a great idea, sure do wish it could be so, still hoping the leader of this gets behind it.

ETA: Gossi thinks so too! See the post right above me!

*good heavens.. gossi posted right above me..*

FollowMal,

I think the Serenity Summer Campaign is a great idea. I think we should be working together as browncoats to promote Serenity & insure a future, moreso than worrying about supporting this team or that team, this individual, or that individual.

The problem here with this "it was my idea first" mentality is that it is causing a division in the ranks, one we can not afford. We should ALL be focused on pushing the DVD & boosting sales. It doesn't matter whose idea it was or who was where first and focusing on those things takes our energies away from what is important, boosting the sales of the BDM DVD.

Me personally, I don't care what day the campaign is, how long it is, etc. I am out here everyday talking it up & pushing it. Sure, I will assist the campaign any way I can & will redouble my efforts during an organized push by the fanbase. I like 11th Hour's idea & am fully behind it. I say let's drop the arguing over who came up w/ what & just do what needs to be done.

Keep flyin'!

(Please don't take the tone as harsh FollowMal as it is not meant to be. I am just over all the arguing and moaning. I want to see us focus on promoting the DVD.)

Yeah....
uh....
I was thinking it has been solved... and oh boy.
Anyways in terms of the "infighting"... this is not much infighting... its a debate.. especially from my point of view. Hell if you want to see infighting see me over at whedonesque:P... not the greatest thing ever, trsut me..

Anyway yeah...
so.... I see nothing wrong with having a serenity day.... kicking off a serenity campaign, ending in the big damn anniversary(big darn anniversay if people dont like the damn).

So yeah... buy the dvds june 23rd, promote promote, have fun get people to check out the movie and tv in the cons...maybe get the actors to say a word or two, etc... and then buy the dvds again(for those who can afford it), on Sept 30th. OH and all htose extra dvds.. give to relatives friends, and libraries and the troops...

So I see 3 ways to participate in this campaign:

1) for people who want only june 23rd, go ahead knock yourself out...
2) for people who want only sept 30th, go ahead knock yourself out
3) for people who are impatient go for june 23rd... get all buzzed up...and then hey lets do it again , go for Spet 30th.

I am in the 3rd camp.

Btw.... I dunno where people got such an insane idea... but participating in the Serenity Summer camapign does NOT mean you boycott, or not participate in the charity screenings.
I am an organizer of one of the charity screenings and I plan to participate in Serenity Campaign too. And if you are not near a charity screening, then please may I recommend to get a shindig together on June 23rd, and collect money and send to charity. I am sure Joss would even appreciate that too.

If people participate in the two campaigns (separate...different....), then it will be great! Its even better.

Prakash

BADGERSFLUNKY

I thought the purpose of this thread was to find a plan that makes sense to the most people. It seemed like we were doing exactly that, and then the leader comes in and says that our votes mean nothing. Don't know about the rest of you, but that does not sit well with me.

Livlass, I do appreciate that there are people willing to take the time to organize these events, but I do not like being told to fall in line just because someone is in a position of power. Where are the convincing arguments for doing this in June? I've yet to hear one. If Kaele is acting like our opinions don't matter, I'd like to hear why. I might be channeling my teenager here, but I'm too ornery to do something I don't agree with just because someone says so.

This is beside the point, and it is a distraction in this thread (is that the point?), but I don't get why we need an army to "defend" Browncoats and "attack" anything. Are the Trekkies declaring war on us? There are power dynamics at work here that are a mite disturbing.

Saying there is no fighting between the leaders of the Serenity Now screenings and the Serenity Day June 23rd camp is a real bit of denial in action. There might be emails going back and forth and there might not be name calling, but no one can tell me that there is not a lot of hostility there. I ain't dumb. Don't tell me that I'm not seeing what is so plain before my very eyes.

Politics aren't my thing, and it's too bad that the Serenity Now guy is so hostile but that's the way it is. He might not be so friendly, but he has lots of valid points. There's a lot of damage to be done by insisting on keeping June 23rd, and it seems clear from this thread that a lot of experienced people who know what they are talking about don't think that's in the best interest of Serenity Day or Browncoats at large.

I'm happy to follow if the leader has the best plan and the best interest in mind. I just ain't so sure that this is what's going on here.

Hi.
Ok Servantofkushial,...I dont want to add to the "infighting"... but 11thHour has been an supporter of this movement, even if she disagrees, with how some things have been deicded or done. She is allowed to have her opinions, and in terms of her "attitude", well I guess I just see more exasperation.

Instead of "attacking" others lets just focus on the campaign, whether its june 23rd, sept 30th , or both or whatever, you pick or decide.

We need as many volunteers and helpers as possible, and while 11th Hour has not agreed with some of the things said here at least she supports it. Compared to some of the comments said by other people, she has been quite positive. We need all the help we can get.

So people please... lets not criticize each other, lets do what we can to get this thing asuccess.

PINGJING

Hi Kaele,
I suggest you tally the votes here. If indeed people are voting for June 23rd, then go for it. We are all a part of this campaign, and while I realize that's a lot of cooks over one pot, voting is the best way to clarify the issue. Everyone gets a say, and then they can't complain if the vote comes down to June 23rd in the end. And if people decide on September 30th, then they must have good reason to do so.

Now, I heard mention of another vote that some people were upset about - I missed it entirely so I don't really know. But so many people have posted in this thread, I really think it would be a good idea to listen to what they have to say.

What do you say? Can we work this out?

SERVANTOFKUSHIEL

Hi to you Kurya! As I stated in a different thread, I beleive people are entitled to their opinions. I don't really care if 11th Hour agrees or disagrees with what's decided or done.
My prob was the tone. As for attitude, it's a matter of perception. And I apologize for being all defensive in my previous post im just aggravated. But, my opinion counts too, even if I am not as revered as 11. So, that being said, I understand that my post didn't really help anything. I really don't want to fight with everyone, I just didn't appreciate how she kept bugging on one particular member, so like a child, I called it out. It was rude of me.

P/S- Only getting about 5 hrs sleep for the past couple weeks so I am WAY more edgy and confrontational than I normally am.

My sentiments exactly.
We were NOT the ones to start the issue.
It's them who made an issue of it.
I didn't like the attitude, I don't like people who tells me what I should do/think in that way.
The project was started independently and with enthusiasm, and we had every right to keep it going that way.
It's no good that we "bow" to them, I think I won't even take part in the event anymore.

I certainly am a browncoat, but first I am a proud and free mind.
I would NEVER have changed the date.

I think you're missing the point. Even if the B!x situation wouldn't exist, it's still better to pick September. I'm now convinced of that. ESPECIALLY with the Campaign plan catching on.
So DON'T argue for the June date out of spite, but calm down and think about what is best for all from an objective POV.
If you want to rant, send me a mail or something, but please don't stirr the fires any more, we got problems enough without constructing new ones.

Hey, ServantofKushiel, thanks for taking so much time to compile a list of my "greatest hits"!

Just a couple of notes, on #11, could you please correct the apostrophe? Don't want folks to think I can't type don't! Oh, and on #8, the quotes around the "I" do make a difference in the meaning of that sentence... so if you have the chance, maybe fix that one too? Thanks.

There's some dropping of italics, a spelling error, and minor stuff on a couple of the other quotes, but no biggie.

Keep up the shiny work!

My wife asks the same question.

Gossi runs SerenityMovie.org and I am an admin at Whedonesque. I have diddly squat influence over anyone and I do apologise if I upset anyone over what I said. I get frustrated about fan campaigns sometimes. I so badly want them to work but I get frustrated when they don't seem to let the fandom know what they want.

I have a question. How many DVDs do people expect to sell on June 23rd or thereabouts before Universal notices?

SimonF

Shiny to meet you! Sorry I didn't know who you are. Be careful with my sway now, its been through the ringer.

I took no offense at YOUR posintgs or anyone elses other than HE WHO SHALL NOT BE NAMED. (but I will not go into that here)

I think the point that everyone seems to be missing is that I don't think the intention was ever to sell a bunch of videos and expect a movie. I think the intention was to sell a bunch of videos and raise Awareness of all things Serenity/Firefly. My impression of the Browncoat 'verse is that you have to be pretty intelligent to be here. No one is naive enough to think that a major corporation is going to dump 40 million into a pot for a movie, just cause we said so - However, I think a number of us DO believe that if we sell enough DVD's on ONE day (hang on guys let me finish) to get the attention of the media world - that will in turn lead to the attention of the world at large - attention that will mean more and more lovers of the verse, followers of the Master Joss, droolers of the Malcolm (insert Inara, Simon, etc at will) - you get my drift. That attention would then lead to more and more dvd sells which EVENTUALLY, with the grace of HE/SHE/IT to which the collective you, do or do not pray, would lead to Universal saying - hey wait a minute! We could make even a straight to video dvd and they would come!

I am not sure why such a group of intelligent, shiny, erudite people can't just all agree to disagree and then LET IT GO. Buy on the 23, buy on the 30th, hold as many SHINDIGS as you want, crimeys - you could do all the above every damn day - just DO something and stop carping on each other.

With the intelligence in this group of people, we could spend the rest of the millenium finding more erudite ways of saying "up yours" then all the stars the night sky could show us.

I could post all sorts of negativeity about HWSNBN - but, I would rather eat virtual strawberries, sniff my turnippy coat (sorry FollowMal u ain't gettin it back) and read how one of us drives past cars that are emitting too much exhaust because they are running without core containment and screams REAVERS!

Sorry about the long winded post. I have just been getting whiplash trying to keep up with all the threads.

So read my signature. Browncoats unite! Girls Rule! Boys like to think they let us! Yes Virgina, there is a Santa Claus! sorry.....

SAMEERTIA

I think we're in serious trouble if we can't find a solution that works for the entire fandom.

Has Kaele posted? Where is she?

I have no problem with making June 23rd the SerenityNow/Equality Now day, and using it to kick off a Serenity Summer culminating in a mass buy on Sept 30th.

(EQUALITY NOW is an important cause. It needs our support- Period. And I think there's more that we can do than charity screenings that a majority of us can't participate in for a variety of reasons.)

Thank you to the folks from Whedonesque & SerenityMovie who've come over to to help find solutions. I appreciate it!

I've said from the beginning that we need the entire fandom onboard for this to work, and I hold to that.
One Army of Browncoats, not 4 or 5 or 10. One. and as one we CAN do the impossible.
