So did anyone else see Memoirs of a Geisha, and think about Inara the whole time? I knew that Joss wanted a companion to have a very similar role in the Verse as the geisha did in Japan, but I didn't know how similar Inara was to the geisha. Everything about the companion/geisha being well trained in the arts and very cultured was consistent. I guess I really appreciate Inara's profession a little bit more and I feel I understand the companion a little better after watching MoaG.

On a more exciting note, I was going to say something to my friend who picked it (I wanted Jarhead for the record) "Wow, she's just like Inara" but then I had to explain "You'd understand if you saw Firefly." To which she said "Yeah, I really do want to watch that show sometime." I'm going to be optomistic and add another tally to the conversion stats!

BOWIE

That movie was sad. It really made me hate that they did that to people. I do see what you mean bout Inara and them though, I'v actually had a theory on that.

Companions are taken when really really young, weather they want to be or not. Their entire lives till about 20-25 they are taught nothing but how to be a compainion. This is why Inara dislikes being called a whore so much. A whore is someone who chooses the career, while Inara didn't get a choice. Its also why she has a hard time admitting she like-likes Mal. If she goes to be with him-probebly marry him cause this is Mal- she'll have to stop being a companion. Its all she knows, it defines her gives her the image of what she is. Gives her respectiblility. Thats a lot to lose for a guy, even if he is a mystery.

Its not just Inara who has been affected by being trained as a companion. Her friend who left was one, one who manedged to break away. It was still all she knew, she when she broke away from the companions she became a whore. I think she was the kinda personality who wanted to be able to make her own desision, instead of just fallowing the rules others set for her.

And the Saphron charecter. "It mean accadomy trained" (inexact quote from Inara) What is Saphron running from. What made her like she is? She was trained by the accadomy maybe she's rebelling from it. All she's been taught in the competitive world of companion is that, "Everyone uses everybody else. We all just play parts." I think what she's looking for is a guy who doesn't use people, but also doesn't make her feel trapped. "What did you think? That I'd stay in your castle, with you?" (inexact quote, but jist gotten) I think she wants to be shown that there are people who don't just use others, but she doesn't really believe it. Thats why she wanted to keep looking good to the one guy, because he really didn't seem to use her, but she couldn't believe it enouph to stay.

Anyway, thats my thoughts. Sorry its so long. :P

If you play Nationstates.net check out the region Firefly.

OOKAMIKAWAHARA

Thanks for posting this tread up. Yes as you can see the world of the Geisha and that Inara are very different. Inara would be considered a high courtasan (sp?) of the yoshiwara, earning top dollar, but would not be considered part of the Geisha world. THe movie was really good and followed the book pretty closely if I remember correctly. I forget the exact story, but there is some controversy surrounding the book. Also if anyone is interested, do google search on Eliza/Elizabeth Dolby (sp?). She is the only (gaijin) foreigner ever to be allowed compeletly into the world of the Geisha. Also the geisha world is slowly dieing, mostly it is confined to Kyoto, Osaka and Tokyo. There has been a shift and instead Hostess bars have poped up and taking over a lot of the roles that the Geisha filled. ie the Hostess ladies, will pour the drinks, make small talk, entertain, and are al ot cheaper to wine/dine or buy gifts for etc etc.
Well enjoy everyone. Mata, Ookami yori

Suren, I do like a nice shiny little Shindig!!!!
