THEDRASTICSPASTIC

Hello all,

First I gotta say how much I love this series :) and to apologise at the length...I have a tendancy to ramble.

My introduction was actually the movie which I watched about a week ago...intrigued, I researched it a bit and was astounded that I had missed an entire TV series.

So, I downloaded the entire season and was instantly hooked (FYI - I'm buying the first season and the movie in about a weeks time (when I can get the cash up). My favorite episode would have to be Objects in Space. Great characterization of Early and River.

Amazing music too...which brings me to the point of this thread -

I'm aware of the recently released soundtrack, but have heard it only has the "westernish" music (the banjo's/guitars/fiddles, etc)...don't get me wrong, its great music, just not what I'm after.

What I am after is the other music...the classical music used throughout the show.

Can anyone identify what pieces of music are being played?

I'll give you some examples:

1 - The music playing at the very end of Serenity - where Mal is telling River the first rule of flying.

2 - The last piece of music playing at the very end of Objects in Space.

3 - The choir-like music playing when River is "psychoanalyzing" Early - talking about the golden retreiver and his mother.

4 - The music playing at the very beginning of Out of Gas.

And many more...

Any ideas?

Thank you :)

First, welcome! I'm sure FollowMal will be 'round soon with your shiny new coat.

1 - This is on ther Serenity Soundtrack, entitled "Love"
2 - I'm pretty sure this is the "River Tricks Early" track on the Firefly Soundtrack. It's been a little while since I've seen the episode, though (ps -- also my favorite!)
3 - Hmm... I'm a bit fuzzy on what was playing that exact moment, but "Out of Gas, Empty Derelict" form the Firefly Soundtrack is probably what you're looking for. It at least as the angsty and alone Mal theme.
4 - I think this is on the "Dying ship, naked Mal" track on the Firefly soundtrack; they combine the weirdest themes.

Hope that helps! I don't know who told you the firefly soundtrack is all western music. Greg Edmondson was always proud of the diversity of the music on the show. It's adorable to hear him talk about it.

Peace.

Howdy, and welcome :)

I think, far as I can remember myself, that I agree with Arcadia on all the music points. IIRC, the only thing that I was left for wanting in either soundtrack was the Ballad of Jayne ;p I think they did a pretty good job of getting all the top moments in there. Obviously not going to be everything in there, but pretty much all the good stuff.

(On a side note: I've oddly found that if it comes to watching the actual DVD's I prefer the Firefly score to the BDM. But when I'm just sitting around and need somethin to listen to, I'll more often put in the Serenity soundtrack. Not sure why :)

Anyways, keep the faith, spread the word, and hold until Mal gets back. I'm sure FollowMal will be along shortly with your browncoat, and that the rest of the welcome wagon will be by with various food and sundries.

No no no. Wait til June 23 to buy both. That is Serenity Day where we are going to purchase the movie (majority) and box set (secondary) to let them know we want more. Unless you are planning on buying them twice to help out.

And welcome aboard.

One day.
One plan.
One army of Browncoats.

On June 23rd, we aim to misbehave.

I'm just going to skip the point of this thread and move right on to other things, first off:
Welcome here, we're weird.

Second tell everyone you know about the series and the movie and get them to buy it.

Third if you think that is a long post you'll have to find new and greater words to describe some of mine.

And finally, you've come to us, you're one of us, you're family, welcome home.

Just to clarify what others have already explained: ALL the music (with three exceptions) in the Firefly series was written by Greg Edmonson and most of it is available on the soundtrack CD.

The exceptions are the show's main theme (written by Joss Whedon), the dance music during the ball scene in Shindig (a classical piece that was somewhat souped up), and the "Hero of Canton" ballad in Jaynestown. I'm actually not sure of the latter -- maybe it was by Edmonson but I don't think so.

ALL the music (with one exception) in Serenity (the movie) was written by David Newman and most of it is available on the Serenity soundtrack CD. The exception is the "Fruity Oaty Bar" commercial, which (as I understand it) was from a real ad from Japan or Hong Kong. It may have been modified or re-recorded for the movie; I'm not really clear about that. I'm referring here to the musical jingle; the graphics were completely original.

I don't disagree on any particular point.

Welcome aboard DRASTICPLASTIC,

Great to have you as a new member of the ship.
I love the music of FF/S as well.I'm waiting until June 23 b4 making my purchase of the soundtracks though.

Until then I will pop in the dvds of the series or BDM if I'm off and the wife and kids are at work. I do this sometime when doing little fix-it jobs around home just so I can hear the music.

Weirdness can be fun

Thanks for all the welcomes guys I've never met such a nice, dedicated and loyal fanbase before...it's a great change from the troll infested sites I usually lurk around.

I guess I was misinformed about the CD's...I'll add em to my wish-list (too bad the Hero of Canton isn't available, that was great )

Hehe, wish I could...unfortunately my income is pretty erratic.

Again, thanks for all the welcomes...I can see I'm going to enjoy my stay here

Hello, TDS, and welcome to our sector of the 'Verse. The music from series and movie are great, no?

The promised strawberries are here at last. Try some of Ravenhair's brownies, too. There's excellent grub in the galley if you don't mind the long chow-line.

Please recycle the sticks and strings from the ice-planets if you partake of them, and put empty Mudder's Milk bottles in the designated cases.

I would love to say welcome to the family, but since I just signed up yesterday, I am not sure I can really consider myself family yet.

I just wanted to mention another music option that, though not official, that hasn't been brought up on this link. I believe they call it Filk Music, but in my opinion the album is a must for any Firefly/Serenity fan.

It is by the Bedlam Bards, a group who consider themselves Browncoats. They even have "The Hero of Canton", and "The Ballad of Joss" on this album.

You can find more infomation on the site below:
http://www.bedlambards.com/Browncoats.html

Or go directly to CD Baby at this link and purchase it! CD Baby will even let you preview all of the songs without purchasing anything.
http://cdbaby.com/cd/bedlambards/from/celtic/

So Welcome to the ever growing fans of Firefly! The more people who join us, the more the word about Firefly and Serenity will spread, and then more fans will join our efforts!

Stay Shiny!
