A recent article on chud.com has Joss talking about the movie...and it isn't good news.

http://www.chud.com/news/dec03/dec10firefly.php3

Visit the site for the full article as I don't know if I can repost it here. Basically he says the movie is more of a "cool idea" than a sure thing...like the Giles spinoff "Ripper" show which never got off the ground.

It sounded too good to be true. I always wondered what studio executive would bankroll a feature film for what (in their eyes) is a failed TV show.

If we ever do see Firefly again, I think it's more likely to be a mini-series (or cross your fingers, new series) than a feature film.

Joss' words really didn't make me think anything different from what I had though before. He is just saying no news yet... which to my mind doesn't mean bad news.

Simon: I can't really tell, they don't seem to be playing by any civilized rules that I know.

Joss is still planning to do "Ripper"...eventually. Although I doubt the animated series will ever resurface.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Yesterday was a big day for fans of Joss Whedon - Buffy season 5 hit DVD, as did the entire series Firefly (with three episodes that never aired). Firefly has long been talked about as a possible feature film - in fact earlier this year Whedon more or less said he would be directing such a movie. Not so fast.

It seems like Joss has, once again, spoken too soon. For fans this is kind of a common occurrence. Remember the Buffy animated show? Or the Giles' spin-off, Ripper, for the BBC? "I have interest, I have hope, but I have no news," Whedon tells TV Guide. "I can't really talk about it. When there is news, I will [tell you]. But if I start talking about it before there is [anything definitive to say], it lessens the chance that [it will get made]." Learn this lesson wisely, Joss. As a fan, I love to be on the in when something exciting is happening in your world, but as a fan I also hate all these false starts that are really just a part of doing business in Hollywood.

Still, if a Firefly movie does happen (and a good set of sales figures on the DVDs could go a long way to making that happen - witness the renewed network interest in The Family Guy after that DVD sold so well), Joss is committed to making sure that the movie is accessible to fans and newcomers to the sci-fi world of the crew of the Serenity. "Assuming it actually happens - which I cannot - yeah, the idea is I'm trying to write a movie that everybody who hasn't seen the show could enjoy, but that doesn't repeat anything that we have seen on the show."

Joss is not saying the movie is "D.O.A." only that he has no news at this point. Joss's tone sound more like someone who is not trying to set himself, or us, up for disappointment by saying the movie is definite.

I am confident that if it can be done, Joss will make it happen.

"May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one."

I guess I thought the movie was something a little more set in stone than that...kind of disappointing. As I said in my first post I always wondered who would ever bankroll a feature film like this. Now I'm more sure than ever it won't get made...

Hans, cheer up. The DVDs are shiny -- if you really want to see the movie get made, buy a few sets over the next few weeks/months to help show there's an interest and a pocketbook out there. I bought the last two copies that my local Barnes and Noble had yesterday night and gave the local Blockbuster a hard time because they not only don't offer it to rent but didn't have it in stock to buy at all. Not one copy. I have 3 on pre-order from Amazon, coming sometime soon and already earmarked as Christmas and Birthday presents for my family. As fans, this is what we can do.

Keep Flying!

"Is there any way I'm gonna get out of this with honor and dignity?"

There's a quote from the first Battlestar Galactica book by Richard Hatch that I think applies here:

Starbuck: You know for a guy taking on a suicide mission, you really need to work on your morale.

in my experience, nothing is set in stone until you see the trailer - even then, it's iffy.

moral of this interview is BUY THE DVDs!!

I have *never* thought the movie was set in stone. It was always a possiblity. There are so many steps in putting a movie on the screen that any one of them could upset the whole project. An extreme example, is the movie in post-production and producers halting the whole thing when the distributor gets cold feet. So, until they start making prints, I remain hopeful because Joss wields a sizeable reputation. Okay, he's not a film god like Ridley Scott. But set in stone, no. That's always been the case, IMO. Industry insider Mitch on the main FF board has often made this point.
And so that subject line is a little over the top.

I apologize for the hyperbole...Now off to the store to buy the DVDs!

Joss is just being cautious. No one would blame the guy after what happened to the series. No one is going to be confident of it actually getting made until they are actually sitting in the cinema watching the opening credits. Joss doesn’t want jinx the project before it gets of the ground.
