So, I was under the impression that a show needed to reach 100 original episodes in order to be sold into syndication. The other day, I was watching the USA network and saw that USA is going to start showing reruns of the show House (from Fox) starting sometime soon (I forget when). But this show is only in its second season and nowhere near 100 episodes. Has the window for syndication shrunk? Another example of this rapid syndication is Law & Order Criminal Intent which is now in its fifth season and probably just passed its 100th episode but has been in syndication for what seems to be at least the past year (maybe longer). Anyone have any idea how this works?

I think they can buy whatever they feel will be watched.

With so many channels these days, they have to show something!

You for got a little show, some of us have heard of around here. Firefly only has 14 episodes, half a season and the rights to show them was purchased by sci fi.

Actually House is currently in sindication on the USA Network. I have seen episodes from the first season a few weeks ago.

Intitially yes, but if a show is popular like House, the rights could be bought early to go into syndication.

Ex. I think Buffy got syndicated before it's 100th eps....as well as Angel.

I'm pretty sure Lost will follow suit once it has a good number of seasons in. (unless ABC is going to be stingy about it).

I don't always like syndication, but since we're referring House here, I could care less. More of Hugh Laurie is a very, very good thing.

You don't need to have 100 hundred episodes to move to syndication. Buyers like to see that 100 episodes have been shot, so there is a good variety of re-runs to air for a longer period of time. But, as long as a show is popular enough, you can make it available at pretty much anytime.
