Im personally not sure that Serenity is a B-Movie but anyway any converage of Serenity is good isn't it. Also calling the cast a "no-name" cast I find very insulting, our BDH's could out-act Brad Pitt with their eyes closed lol.

Article:
"Sure, Serenity may seem like an A-flick but look closer: its best-known cast member is a low-ket British thespian (Chiwetel Ejiofor) playing the bad guy. Its a Sci-fi-western with horror tinges. And it was made on a budget that would cover most A-films sandwiches with a no-name cast from a failed TV series. Cut through the witty dialogue and well-rounded characters and you'll see the letter 'B'. Whedon's adoptable catchphrases and expert storytelling largely make up for the lack of truly awe-inpsiring space spectacle, and the cult of "Browncoat" fans provide the final proof that this is a superior B-Moive rather than a true A-list blockbuster"

I'm actually a huge Brad Pitt fan. I believe that he's incredibly underrated, dismissed as a typecast hunk. Just look at these movies to get into perspective.

12 Monkeys.
True Romance.
Fight Club.

I think a little chaos is in order.

B-Movie??? Dude, we are so A-List it's pathertic. More Alliance propaganda to indoctrinate the masses. Pay them no heed.

P.S. - Then again, it can be a source of pride to wear the B-Movie banner. It's a widely overlooked field.

At last.
We can retire and give up
this life of crime.

Hmmm

I used to read Empire alot when I was younger and they would often fall into traps like this. i,e place films into mindless categories. I'm not sure why the writer feels the need to pigeon hole SERENITY like this it is curious.

I also don't understand why he'd have a sentence like:
"Cut through the witty dialogue and well-rounded characters and you'll see the letter 'B'."

Why?

Of course if you remove a crucial part of any film you'll be left with little?!?! Makes no sense... It's like saying:

"Remove the Italian influence outa the Godfather and what d'you have ....!!!?"

So simplistic.

Still we know it's great and that's the main thing - some doof at Empire looking for an angle in this months mag is nothing to become too worked up over. By next year he'd have changed his mind when a scourge of Sci-Fi / Western immitators floods the cinemas :D

Thanks for the link.

Who ever wrote the critical article needs to rethink things! "Lack of an awe inspiring space spectacle."? What more do they want, The original STAR WARS! Also, in my opinion, Firefly did NOT fail, it was wrongfully canned by a TV station that as of mid 2002 wouldn't know its butt from a hole in the ground!

Wow, getting defensive around here.

Being called a "B" movie isn't nessesarily a bad thing. It's the term usually attributed to cult phenom films - a group in which I feel Serenity fits right in.

And as for calling them "no-name" actors - they pretty much are. I've converted all of my friends, but there are still some who, when I mention "Nathan Fillion", they have to take a minute to figure out who I mean. Grab a random person off the street - and see if they recognize the names of ANY of the cast - and you'll likely be dissapointed.

And well-know does now always equal talented.

And I'll go ahead and say I like Brad Pitt as well. He's usually a strong actor, and he often picks very interesting movies - and not just generic Hollywood shite. Mr.&Mrs. Smith sucked hard, and I'm not a fan of the Ocean's # movies, but Fight Club, Seven, 12 Monkeys and Snatch easily balance those out, IMO.

OOps I forgot to the post the criteria they used to decide if it was a B-Movie.

1) Be a genre film (check)
2) Have no A-list names (check)
3) Have a well below average budget (check)
4) Have a certain ironic "B-Movie Spirit" (not really)
5) Have cult appeal (check)
6) Cameos of Cult heroes (sortof)
7) Influence of B-Movies to come (too early)

Lol I am taking a lot of flak for that Brad Pitt part lol, yes he has been in some good films and acted well in them. Im just remembering Troy just now.

I didn't like Brad Pitt for the longest time because of his pretty boy image, but when I started watching his movies, I became a fan. Snatch is great...

I also liked Troy, but I think it was more because of Homer's Iliad than the movie itself...and I really thing Sean Bean is a good actor that is often underutilized (Equilibrium for example).

Dowie100, next time you feel like using Brad Pitt's name, just insert the name "Paul Walker" and I don't think anyone will argue!

And after not even addressing the subject of this thread, I guess I'll simply say that the media could call Serenity a romantic comedy and that still wouldn't change my love for it.

Well, I wouldn't call it a B movie but it is a low-mid budget cult classic, and there's been so many awesome B-movies that I'm quite happy for Serenity to be number eight in that listing.

They should have included 'Targets' in the list by Peter Bogandavich though. That's an awesome 60's film about a young Ron Howard look-alike who's very quiet and very nice, and then picks up a sniper rifle and shoots people. Boris Karloff's last film, and his best.

And as for Empire, sure they're wrong half the time (apart from the Godlike Kim Newman) but didn't they hype Serenity for months in the lead up, with massive articles, interviews and then a solid four star review, and then with the DVD coming out ran another couple of articles too.

They ARE browncoats, there was nothing disrespectful about this article, and I hope every one learns to cool it a little before getting out the knives as it makes us a little less 'funky ass cool weird' and a little more 'creepy starey weird'.

Empire are our friends.

Storymark you a God of reason and I salute you and feed your children.

Oh, and more work for Chiwetel, you out there!

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Some of the best flix out there are B films so I would not overly concern myself about this article. It is after all just one article. The more press we get the better. We keep her name up in lights & new fans will keep flocking in.

I'm a Brad Pitt fan. "Legends of the Fall", "A River Runs Through IT" (network admin joke), "Se7en", "Twelve Monkeys": a fairly extensive list of capable and memorable performances by Mr. Pitt.

But the pinnacle of his career thus far is "Fight Club". The first time I heard the expression "space monkeys" was in that film, so I believe it's reasonable to assume that even JW admires the film.

And come on guys, who amongst us doesn't love "Snatch"? I mean, I even know some women whose tastes it fits, who do not normally go in for that sort of thing. Maybe just because it's got Pitt and Jason Statham in it simultaneously?

Cunningly,

zoid

P.S.
Okay, so "Troy" was horrible. So were the Star Wars prequels, and I don't think any less of Ewan McGregor (another fine actor, imo). I reckon Brad was only doing something to keep himself busy while Angelina was off doing Colin Farrell, er, I mean "Alexander"...

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

And here I thought the defining characteristic of B movies was their budget. Sure, some B movies are cult hits, but many more aren't. I had always heard B movie defined as having a budget of like, 1-digit millions or less. So, say "The Blair Witch Project" which made some disgusting amount of money, is still a B movie because the budget was nothing. Serenity had a fairly low budget, but it wasn't a B budget.
That's just how I've heard it defined, though.
I suppose there's no such thing as bad publicity.

I don't think Serenity is a B movie, but it is a cult classic or will be when it catches hold throughout the population.

Like Bladerunner before it.. it will become something prized and copied.
