The chances of it happening are pretty much nil, but wouldn't a score CD be ultra-shiny? Of course I'd also be first in line if they ever release the 20 CD "The Complete Christophe Beck Buffy."

I wonder who would do the score if the movie ever happens... would Joss try to get a bigger name, maybe?

I personally really like what Greg Edmonson did combining western and Eastern influences along with more sci-fi'y elements. There were a few episodes with especially memorable scores, namely the short scene when Mal sees the wrong angels coming down in "Serenity," all the stuff in "Out of Gas," the last scene in "The Message" (as mentioned in the DVD featurette) and the beginning of Objects in Space. I also really liked the music that accompanies the clips at the end of the "Joss tours the set" featurette, but I'm not sure what ep it's from, if any. Can anybody help there?

Anyway... I feel even sadder about the Firefly score since though I don't quite rank it up with Beck's work on Buffy at least there's a couple of promo CD's around that have plenty of his cues on there, plus the few bits on the Buffy CD's. (Though there's still a lot of cues from especially season 4 but also 2 and 3 that I'd love to see.) I've made a few clips myself from the DVD's but of course it's not the same. (And Fox never even let Rob Kral post his unused Angel cues... bastards.)

I would like that. Also, the sheet music for the opening theme, since I plat viola. Which, even if a violin part, I can transpose it.

Keep flyin'!

I'm so glad someone else noticed the score. Being a big film music fan, I paid attention to it, but didn't find it remarkable when it first aired. Now that I am watching it on DVD though, I really appreciate what Edmonson did. And it grows on you. As you say, it is a very original and effective mix of Eastern and Western, and literally Western to boot. And the ending of the Message is something to holler about for sure. Wow.

Depending on who they hired to play the music (union musicians or not), there is a chance that a CD can be made if the DVD sales are strong.

Do you think there is enough interest in the score for an interview with Edmonson here on FFF? I used to interview film music composers and I have been toying around with the idea of arranging for an interview. If an interview is to be done, does anyone have any questions for Edmonson that you would like to see asked?

Would Haken post it here on FFF if there were an interview?

Heh, I actually meant western as in the genre. I realized later that it's sort of confusing, especially in a sentence along with Eastern used in the regional sense.

Yeah, I'm also a film score fan, though I'm not really an expert or anything. There's still some parts of the Firefly score that I find a little off, but mostly I think it works really well.

As much as I'd like to believe that, I just don't see it happening. The Buffy fanbase is much larger than Firefly's, Beck won a Emmy (for whatever that's worth), the Buffy DVD's sell pretty darn well, and yet there's no real Beck CD release. And since there weren't pop songs used in Firefly, you couldn't sneak a track or two onto a soundtrack CD. I think the best that can be hoped for is maybe some kind of promo like Beck released. Or something with the movie. :-)

As for the recording, I have no idea how Firefly was done, but I know Beck used mostly synthesizers for his stuff, with one or two real musicians (usually multi-instrumentalists) to flesh out the recordings.

I for one would love to see something like that. Who knows, if he realizes there's people that care about the score it might spur trying to get a release of any kind out there.
