Not of it's own, per se - but certainly the next major Michigan Sci-Fi convention there will be a Browncoat room/viewing party, thus establishing our presence there.

Be nice to coordinate that with other MI Browncoats, but I'll go it alone if I gotta.

and one I've had in passing. until I remember the Beauty and the Beast convention I helped run shudder where I swore never again would I be on an exec comm for any convention. EVER. by the time our exec comm got done melting, there were only four of us left. we started with eight. happily, by then BatB fandom had long since diminished, so we had only about 150-175 attendees. long story short - we broke even.

remember, Harlock he/she who suggests it, gets it. if you've done it before, more power to ya. if you haven't, be willing to commit an enormous block of your personal time to it. oh, and wave buh-bye to family and friends. you won't be seeing them on a regular basis for awhile.

I myself have run several RPG and Fandom conventions and the main problem is the inital cost to secure space, guests, travel, entertainment, etc. One particular convention , where I was lucky enough to be an officer without being the funder, lost $7,000.00 Most of my other conventions have broken even or made a little money. My first suggestion is start trying what i suggested in my FL/GA Browncoats post. Get people together in you area see the interest. If its hard to get more than 10 people together over a Sat/Sun a convention would tank for sure.

Also... I can kill you with my brain...

you sounded like a fan who knew their convention business

Ever heard of Polariscon? no? there's a good reason - not did the convention lose money (too many media guests, not enough registrations), but at least three members of the exec comm were deep in personal debt for years afterward.

so how about we keep doing what we're doing - holding regional shindigs, and depending on attendance, extend it to a two-fer (two days instead of an evening) and see what happens.

the more I think about it, the more I want to hold a Shindig at MarsCon in March...if I wasn't already running the Art Show and two other programming items, I might be able to pull it off. maybe I better go check our programming list first...yeah, that would be a good idea.

There is a Firefly Convention on next year.
Fusion - run by Starfury Events.

This is being held in Blackpool in the UK, April 30th - May 2, and Nathan Fillion is one of the guests.

I know a lot of the UK & European fans are planning to go.

ahem...the official term now for a Firefly-oriented convention type gathering (no matter how big or small) is Shindig.

I am quite proud of this term as I coined it...instead of calling it a Con, its a Shindig...obvious reasons.

Dan & I split up 4 years ago and I haven't heard from him in about 3 1/2 years - which is why Tachycon folded. He owns it now, but isn't doing anything I don't think. I may be starting a new show in the near future though :)

Hi Kelso,
I just sent off an e-mail to the DragonCon website asking that same question. I told them if they could get even one actor from the series, they would have tons of fans traveling from all over to attend. I live in Atlanta and attend DragonCon every year faithfully. If the Firefly movie begins filming soon it could be in production or even done by the time Sept. gets here. I just know there will be a huge Firefly presence this year and if Nathan and any of the gang attended it would be awesome.
So write to DragonCon if you get a chance and encourage everybody you know to do the same. That's what I'm doing... and we'll keep our fingers crossed!

Lori, I am in Jacksonville. Chili's has sent me to manage Alexandria La., Jacksonville Beach Fl, Mandarin Fl, St. Augustine Fl, Tuscaloosa Al, and now back to Jacksonville for Orange Park Fl Chili's so there is a brief synopsis of the last 5 years. Whoa, it really is a small world. I used to live in Jacksonville. I love that place...now I live in Tucson...two words: environmental shock.

I've never been to one of these conventions. They just aren't advertised so if they are in town, I never hear about them until it's in the past tense in the paper or on the news...always great fun for me. So, how does one go about finding these conventions?

Some Bad News and Some Good News regarding the guests at Fusion....

Sean (the organiser) made the following post last night on the Starfury Yahoo group:

I have just been informed about the cancelation of three guests for
STARFURY: FUSION.

Gina Torres is needed for costume fittings and make up tests for
FIREFLY: SERENITY, and has had to cancel her appearance.

Morena Baccarin has just been cast in a film.

Nicole Bilderback has been cast in the TV series THE FIRM.

All 3 have agreed in principle to attend a STARFURY event in the
future, and hopefully announcements will be made soon.

All guest appearances are subject to work commitments that my result
in guest cancelations without prior notice.

Thanks to help from ME, we already have one replacement guest.

Summer Glau, who portrayed River Tamm in FIREFLY, and also the
ballerina in the classic ANGEL episode WAITING IN THE WINGS has ageed
to make her first ever conventon appearance at FUSION.

Sean Harry

============

Before ya all start hoping for another FF guest, he also posted this today:

Subject: Fusion Guest Update

OK, I've just secured the second replcement guest. We're tying up the
lose ends, but hopefully I'll be able to announce tomorrow evening.

This is a major, major actor. Infact I'm kinda amazed that he's
agreed to attend.

He's never been in BUFFY, ANGEL or FIREFLY. Never worked with Joss
Whedon.

He is however, probably the biggest name guest to ever attend a
STARFURY event, and I'm still in slight shock that he's agreed to
attend. He's such a big name that he'll join Nick and Emma as one of
the headline guests.

If I had to name the top 5 all time Sci-Fi actors, he'd definately be
one of them. He's been in what's accepted as one of the greatest Sci
Fi films ever made, and also in unquestionable one of the greatest
ever Sci-Fi TV series.

I don't get excited very often. I'm excited!

My guess is Morena's going w/ Gina for costume fittings for Serenity.

Bad news for the con, but good news for Firefly fans. It means production is moving ahead for the BDM.

A pity we won't see Gina, she was on 24 for about three seconds (UK cable) the other day, she's so great even in that role. But still it will be fun to see other browncoats around at Fusion and maybe share a beer. Even at the Norbreck (ladies with lovely silk dresses may wish to avoid sitting on the ballroom floor it was sticky).
