RIVER would totally win. I don't know much about Buffy, but does she read minds? I think that would give River the advantage.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

This has been discussed many times. I have heard arguments for both sides, citing Buffy's superhuman something-or-other saying she could outlast River...
I don't care. River wins. End of discussion.
Or course if they ever met they'd just go kick reaver-vamp butt together, so the point is probably moot. But River wins.
Alright, so I was hasty ending the discussion. Why does River win? Because all it would take would be one shot in a vital organ to end someone, no matter their endurance. She could anticipate what would be done; she would know when to strike. She wins.

Summer is also cuter than Sarah Michelle.
Now there's a comparison discussion I'll gladly get myself involved in.
I also want to make it known that I once slept with a girl that looked almost exactly like Sarah Michelle Gellar (although I didn't do it for that reason). And we were neckid! Woohoo!
My ex-girlfriend also looks a bit like Summer, by coincidence, (although she's blond). There was also neckidness.
Inform the men!

My answer cannot be questioned.
River would win, because Buffy relies on strength, and does not use pressure points or 'dirty' fighting. Her strength would become her weakness as River methodically took her apart.

OK why are we assuming they'd fight at all?? Though I will have to say River's mind reading would give her a slight advantage, it would also depend on motivation. River attacks randomly, but only when triggered or when she really has to and Buffy only kills vampires and demons. So there would need to me some serious misunderstanding to even get the fight going.
That said, this is an odd little arguement as both are fictional characters. If we want to discuss who would win between Summer and Sarah, it's obvious that Summer would. She's a dancer. They have incredible physical strength and endurance. Sarah is in good shape, but she's an actress. She'd drop like a rock.

Uh, let us not forget that River can "kill you with my mind" (episode Trash). Perhaps a talent we didn't get the chance to see?

Also remember that Rive is freakishly fast when she needs to be. With that, her reading, and her skill I think Buffy's only real hope is that River just happens to go helpless at a "sweet bung of a time".

THIS is an odd little arguement? Have you missed the threads about "bedding down" with fictional characters? Or the ones about how those fictional characters bathe? I think this is pretty common discussion for all nerds/geeks/sociopaths involved.

And being a misanthrope myself, I'll put in my two cents: River. The mind reading, the proficiency with a variety of weapons, and the fact that she got hit a couple of times during a bar fight by very large men and didn't flinch.

Anyone ever heard the song "Crazy Bitch" by Buck Cherry? Makes me think of that bar scene everytime I hear it... y'know, save for the explicit parts.

Also, on the Summer vs. Sara Michelle things, I read an interview with Summer where she was training for her role in... CSI, I think it was, playing a high school track runner or something. She claims not to be very athletic, saying that she had a really hard time running. Strange for someone who looks like they don't even break 100 lbs., cause I know some 230 lbs. brutes who can do two miles in under 12 minutes.

Being able to know when to hit Buffy doesn't equate to being able to stop her. River would not know how or be physically able to stop her, this fight would be outside of her abilities on a very basic level.

The fight is superhuman vs. upgraded human.

Superhuman is going to win. Destined to win.

Plus Joss has said Buffy would win.

Sure would be a good fight to watch! Unless of course River with her extra powers would know that Buffy was unstoppable and just gave up.

Got something on the brain there, Agatsu?

Anyway, I say River would win. Seeing the way they both fight, River's style has quite a bit more flexibility and it seems like she'd be better prepared for anything that could possibly come at her.

And besides, Buffy may have fought a whole bunch of vampires at once...but how would she fair against an entire room full of Reavers and then some? Those buggers don't have any particular aversion to wooden stakes...

*realises that she might have just started another debate* Methink's I be playing Devil's advocate....

But it IS an interesting question, after all...

Nonsense, of course it does. Like I said, even if she has superhuman endurance, she's not invincible. Her flesh can still be punctured, her organs are still vital. Unless you're going to tell me that's she's frickin superwoman with skin of steel. And even those from Krypton have a weakness. Come on, I haven't watched the show, but I can't imagine it would be any fun if she were never in any kind of danger.

Forgot one more important advantage. River uses guns (when she has one), Buffy doesn't. I don't think Buffy is impervious to bullets and as far as dodging them, River can hit her targets with her eyes closed, imagine if they were open.

Interview with Joss Whedon

Who would win in a fight? River or Buffy?

Wow, nobody’s ever asked me that, and I’m shocked!

Ultimately, I can’t say. I’m going to have to watch. Buffy’s got the super strength, but River’s got all kinds of crazy training. She’s not a super hero in the same way, but she’s very focused. It’s tough. It’s a smack-down. Be there.

Summer is a trained ballerina. Dance trains the muscles to perform a certain way, and makes the transition to running or swimming competitively very difficult.
So I don't find her statement at all unusual. I can do a long dance routine and feel like total grace, but running, I feel extremely clumsy.

ok I have to agree. After 15 years as a ballerina. I can bench my own body weight and endure a punishing amount of physical exertion and pain. However, I can run for squat. I can barely do a mile on the tredmill and I still can't work those stupid ellipticals.

This is a Firefly website, it's not like anyone is actually going to say "Buffy". Seriously, like you're going to get an honest appraisal here. I like the way Joss said it. He said (and I wish I could find the source) that Buffy would win, because she's got superpowers, but that Jayne would sneak up and knock Buffy in the head with a frying pan just as she was about to finish River off.

Ok so here's where I get hazy:
Buffy: Defeated more often than most people can count almost constantly by small numbers of foes. Lost pitifully to a single manmade non-magical foe. Created by present day technology of the US government.
(She never beat him for that matter, she got others to do it because she was too weak on her own. I kid you not, watch Buffy again.)

River, in addition to being a single manmade non-magical foe created by technology 500 years more advanced than present day US government stuff, is completely undefeated in spite of going up against more numbers than Buffy has ever faced in battle (though Buffy has actually faced similar numbers she never actually fought them and certainly didn't beat them.)

In short:
Buffy: Loses constantly even to the very weak.
River: Has never lost.

If Buffy had her support Scooby gang with her she beats River without a doubt, because Buffy has never been afraid to cheat, but one on one Buffy dies ... again.
