Thrusters engaged at low power nudge the Mothraship, disentangling her from the magnetotail of Planet Icarus. The vast solar sails are unfolded once again.

As she emerges from the shelter of the planet, her Commander can see that Godzookie has been fooled by the decoy vessel.

Fascinated, the Commander watches 'zilla tumble past the event horizon.

Pyro-shields are deployed to vaporize errant debris and soap-bubbles.

Perhaps she will not need the Weapon after all, for these be fools who will destroy each other, leaving only the faintest of ripples in the fabric of space-time.

"Lt. Bun, awaken the Telepath."
"Yes, sir! Awakening the Telepath."

Waiting, the Commander allows part of her mind to stray light-years away to the realm of her heart's ease, to that one place where she knows peace and joy. Her home. His home.

Cloaked in scarlet, he walks in amber light that filters through the turning leaves of the forest, his golden hair lifted by an autumn breeze.

"Soon, my love." She whispers it, feeling his arms around her, feeling...

"Sir, the Telepath is awake."

Telepaths? I don't remember inviting any telepaths into this war. I guess telepaths joining in the fray is the only reasonable explanation why Citizen threw down his 1st and only bar of soap, and ran for the hills speaking in a strange language.

Somewhere off in the distance, a man could be heard screaming…

Those who offer war should never be astonished at what they invite thereby.

Anyone who would (please pardon my synaptically intermittent memory) "scrawl the date and time of this war around rims in the bathrooms of every cheap bar in the 'verse," or whatever you say you did, can reasonably expect to elicit a wide variety of responses.

----------------------------------

A large black perambulator (Earth-That-Was, early-to-middle 20th Century C.E.) is wheeled onto the bridge of the Mothraship. Its hood is up. The opening is covered with thick black netting.

"Why dost thou disturb my sleep?" The voice is that of dry husks rubbed together, and not a little waspish in mood.

The Commander turns slightly, her eyes still on the displays. "I have a mission for you. Transmit this," she hands a single sheet of paper, folded once, to Lt. Bun, who puts it under the edge of the netting, "to the two named at the top of the page. Eyes Only -- do not discuss the message, and hand back the page when you have finished."

DAYVE

...the small, one man ship - a reconfigured Airstream - hovers just above a valley, the thruster pods hum audibly but efficiently. The once gleaming hull, now dull and dented, all markings and insignias no longer readable - except the one small, rectangler strip seared into the very metal - 'Whirled Peas' - it says, a long forgotten homage to a happier time.
The farmer has been here before... and he searches his memory for a name. A graveyard now, the bodies of hundreds of thousands lie beneath the still blackend ground.....
The fogginess begins to clear in his mind and he remembers - a town...a bar...a girl. She had loved him once, or so he thought.... but she left him for a life less complicated. And now he recalls that night - the night that left him broken.. a shell of a man... eking out a living the best he could...moving from world to world, hoping that he might one day redeem himself and get back that former life... the 'glory days' before he lost himself in her.
It all comes flooding back now, like the kiss at the end of a wet fist.... alone drinking and mindlessly celebrating whatever there was to celebrate....when he saw, in the mirror...Nancy.
It seems that she and this man, who called himself Han were in the next booth at the shindig. In a fit of drunken jealousy, the farmer drew his blaster and took aim at Han.
But Han was hot... he drew fast and shot... and the farmer collapsed in the corner...

(Love yer Airstream, Dayve!)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lt. Bun jumps back as the paper is snatched from her hand. A switch snicks and there is, nearly obscured by the heavy netting, the small flare of a penlight, deep within the perambulator.
Silence.
A long-handled back-scrubber immolates itself against the forward starboard sector of the pyro-shield, activating a notifier. This is followed by a mass of clear liquid, shampoo perhaps, the size of an Icarian watermelon, which spreads itself, sizzling, along the shield. The reaction generates a shower of rainbow-hued secondary globules which are in turn vaporized to the accompaniment of a symphony of notifiers.
The Commander, mindful of disturbing the Telepath, pots down the music and contemplates the beauty which may be found in destruction.
Logs blazing in a containment of dressed stone at one end of the great hall. Feet in thick socks, warming near the hearth. The dear face, firelit. Shadows moving among chessmen.
"Madame Commander." Snick. The paper, re-folded, is thrust out again. "The transmission is complete."
DAYVE
....had it not been for a roving band of gypsies he would have died that night in the bar...(looking back now, perhaps that is what he really wanted...), but when he awoke, he was on a ship...a living ship... - 'whirled peas' - docked in the massive "belly" of the beast....
In the days that followed, bound for Paquin, the farmer realized that he wasn't the only lost soul aboard... the ship was full of misfits and losers... human cargo to be sold to the freak dealers and carnival bosses...
He spent six months of his life biting the heads off of chickens... in return, he was allowed to live with the beasts that were used to pull the massive poles that supported the huge canopy. It was here, amoung the great animals that he found his only ally.... a massive tusker named Raj...
After many sleepless nights of planning the farmer finally made good his escape... using a rudimentary key fashioned from elephant dung and hardened in the blue-red sun of Paquin, the farmer freed Raj and himself along with several of the largest animals... in the stampede that ensued, the farmer managed to find his old ship. The Airstream had been attached to one end of a giant Tilt-A-Whirl. To his great surprise, the small metal hide-a-key box was still in place under the rusted propane tank. He held his breath as the reaction thrusters rattled to life, and as the ship broke free of the midway kiddie ride, the farmer thought he could hear the thunderous trumpets of the rampaging beasts in the distance...."Goodbye old friend.. I owe you one..." he whispered - and he was off into the purple sunrise....
