For extra credit for my speech class, I have volunteered to give an impromptu speech. Now to make the whole thing less scary, my instructor is letting us submit a few speech ideas and he will ultimately pick. One of my ideas was why Firefly is the best show ever to get cancelled. I would like to incorporate some views from the Browncoat community should this topic be the one chosen. I figure it could be a good way to recruit some more Browncoats.

I love my captain

I think you should do a speech on why people dont like to be meddled with. a broader topic with a serenifly theme that wont draw to much ire from the crowd. Or go ahead and go with the canceleation theme and focus it on corporate greed and the evil of Reality tv and its dummifying america

"And I think calling him that is an insult to the psychotic lowlife community."

Doesn't sound very impromptu.

Well, since it is our first try at impromptu he didn't want us to be freaked out. So we are to give him topics and then he will choose one 10 minutes before we speak and then we go from there. It is just that I am planning on being a bit prepared...lol Either way it is extra credit. If I can round up a few more Browncoats in the process, then even better!

It's called love.

Fiction comes in a lot of types, some of them make you laugh, or even cry, some just give you a smile, but most don't achieve greatness because most never touch you. They are outside of you and you look in.

Firefly was one of the rare things that could reach inside of you, make it a part of you and you a part of it, make you care about what happened after the screen went black.

It's something that sticks with you after you stop watching and can pull out strong emotions. Maybe it makes you cry, but it doesn't need to stop there because it isn't limited like most things. When you are watching you aren't just seeing these people, you're living with them, standing beside them (metaphorically I hope) feeling their pain, and fear, and love, and joy.

In most fiction if someone said, "Everybody dies alone," or, "Mei-mei everything I have is right here," you'd dismiss it as melodrama or some such, but in Firefly it isn't because Firefly is as real as the person sitting next to you, and the reason for that is that it reaches out and gets inside you. It makes you love it.

But if you say that you'll probably get committed.

If you watch Thank You For Smoking it says some interesting things about this sort of thing. If you stand up in front of a class and give a speech there is no way you can actually make them understand anything of value in the time you have available, that's why most speeches are BS, instead try to give them an impression, and if possible manipulate them into getting the right idea.

As a speech teacher myself, I think you'd do us all a service with such an interesting topic. Remember to demonstrate for the audience what's in it for them. Talk about how the show is an amalgam of all the things they like, and emphasize that the network's decision to cancel the show was based on their mishandling of it, not a lack of audience interest.

Can I just be the first one to cast my vote against calling the 'verse "Serenifly"? That is just...words just fail. It's just awful.

Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you."

Beautifully put. My goal is to get them curious enough to want to watch it. After that, the show will exert it's power and will have them as hooked as the rest of us.
