Being somewhat of a noob around here, I was wondering how the tradition of giving Browncoats to new members got started. I really think the giving of Browncoats is one of the things that makes us such a (mostly) warm, happy family. So, FollowMal and others, what's the story?

"The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you."

I'm a bit reluctant to answer this one, DeepGirl.
I was unaware that new folk considered it a "tradition".

You know I started this after I'd been here awhile, not sure when.. or really where the idea came from.
Didn't think when I started that I probably shouldn't.. just blithely did it. It's become something I love to do.. I just enjoy it. There was a space of time where my friend Kaele and I did it, and had a lot of fun greeting and virtually feeding folk. She sort of drifted away from doing it.. got very busy.. but FloralBunny and some of the others have continued that tradition.

There was one thread some time ago, that questioned how the original members of this board felt about it and it got mostly good thoughts, so I continued. Folks seem to like it, I love doing it, so I keep doing it.

I think it stems from this being "home", it feels like home here and I think I wanted to extend that to all the new folk so they could enjoy that feeling too.

You know,I'm feelin' all kinds of pretentious... I think I'll go on back to my storeroom now.

No need to feel pretentious in the least.

I didn't mean to make it sound strange or anything; I like that you give out the Browncoats. I know how welcome it makes everyone feel. Knowing that there's people like you and FloralBunny to make everyone feel at home is comforting to noobs, I think. Being a noob is kind of scary at times. Sometimes I feel kind of self-conscious posting a topic or speaking up about something I feel strongly about. But knowing there are kind faces helps me to be more at ease.

This is our home, DeepGirl187, and I'm glad you feel comfortable enough to say something you feel strongly about or to speak up.

Oh, and I may be overreacting a little to the question.. I feel kind of clutzy handing out 'coats sometimes.. but I'm not going to stop, not unless someone asks me to.

I'm glad you like it.

I've been places where that's happened to me. Not from Browncoats, mind you, but in other, to remain nameless, fandoms.

I've just never understood that mentality. If you don't want new folks you start a private mailing list, you don't run other folks off. *sigh*

Folks like that just make me wonder if they was brought up by baboons, but then I later think that the observation is unfair to the baboons.

I'm just glad to see so many happy, friendly folks as we got here. Makes me proud to be a browncoat.

{EDIT} D'oh! My brain went AWOL. I forgot to say, how much I appreciate FollowMal's handin' out of the coats. Made me feel all happy.

I remember when the "tradition" started, and when FollowMal graciously asked the "veterans" if it was all right to keep doing it.

I was one who answered (and said yes, of course). But now I look at my ID number and FollowMal's, and I can't really see how I ever thought of myself as much more of a veteran than she.

I think it's a great tradition, and as long as FM is willing to do all the hard work of hunting up the new 'coats and coating them, I'll feel like all's well on this old rust bucket.

*the bun's keen senses pick up the faint odor of "new browncoat" in this thread. she enters, laden with show-themed food.*

Welcomes all 'round, and have a strawberry. I've been out mugging Shepherds all afternoon and the haul is shiny indeed. Tomatoes, rosemary, cucumbers, zucchini, a lot of strawberries. In the souk they're selling ice-planets and imported Mudder's Milk from Higgins' Moon. We'll have a buffet together as soon as the cheese is hot and the cake-frosting is chocolate-y enough.

(FM, have you SEEN the slurpalicious not-from-the-series Nathan photo we are captioning this week? My keyboard is filling up every time I go to look at the pic for inspiration.)

Gee thanks FollowMal just what I've always been wantin'

*shrugs into the new shiny, feelin kinda special* Seems to be just about perfect. Guess now might be the time to head to the Galley and catch myself some of those strawberries from FloralBunny before they disappear...

Thanks guys, you're stars:-)

RMMC, thanks for the welcome. How'd I get roped in? I was one of those reluctant folks who resisted the persuasions of friends for *months* and who finally gave in and sceptically watched the borrowed DVDs that they *insisted* on lending me without any encouragement whatsoever on my part to do so.

Now its a real affirmation to come onto this site and have an almost daily rerun of my own Firefly Emotional Journey from every new fan who joins the boards

The wheel turns. My best friend is still resisting my ravings about the show but he's weakening and I'm pretty sure that the taster DVD from Germany is going to clinch it...

I have to say, it really is - for me anyway. Getting my 'coat was just such a cool way of being made to feel welcome and at home, and I have seen many new people seeking FollowMal for their 'coat.

I personally really love it, it's a great ice breaker and does contribute to the family feeling here in this shiny site. Every site should have a meeter and greeter like this one.

Don't stop! Keep holding that line and keep handing out them coats! Wars not done yet (we all ain't just folk yet) - we got a series to save, and this time I have a feeling the battle of Serenity Valley might have a happier ending for us browncoats!

Icarus, some of us have taken to welcoming
newcomers who identify themselves as such
on the board.

FM has a storeroom full of virtual browncoats
which will fit all comers.

I and others forage for strawberries and other
show-themed food for the buffet.
(Now that we're over 20850 it's getting too
hard to seat all at the galley table.)

Somewhere out in the cargo bay a vat of hodgeberry
wine is fermenting.

There has lately been an incursion of llamas through several threads but we are trying to
confine them to the virtual dance par-tay thread.

That should cover most of it.
I hope.

Don't be a stranger. Caption with us. Write poems. Dance.

Oh, and keep spreading the Firefly word.

I was rather expecting to get flamed on my first entrance here, as well. IIRC, my first post here was a rather long diatribe about how great the show was and how wrong FOX was for killing it, etc. I think I even mis-spelled a few of the actors' names :) Looking back, would have been flame-bait anywhere else but here.

Instead, I got a few warm welcomes and my boorishly long thread was quietly pushed off to the archives where it belonged :)

Anyways, just a long way to add my hurrahs to the great community here. And of course a grand kudos to FollowMal and what has become a hall-mark of FFF.net. Never will get tired of seeing the welcoming committee popping by to let the new 'Coats know they've finally come home.

Just wanted to say my own thanks to FollowMal. I've not been here long but you may have noticed I've made myself quite at home (moving my junk into all the spare rooms and tying up the phone for hours) and that's all thanks to the shiny way she and everyone else greeted me here.

I had never posted on any online board before and was very nervous! The shiny browncoat let me feel that I didn't have to earn my right to have opinions but was already accepted even by the long-term members.

Plus, the thought of that lovely virtual coat inspired me to go out and get a real one that everyone could see! Your good influence is therefore spreading to everyone I now meet!

Okay, we've heard from a lot of Browncoats who found a warm greeting and shiny coat when they clambered aboard this leaky old boat. And we've seen how much FollowMal has done to keep that spirit flowing.

But what of FollowMal herself? Tell us, FM, what was your greeting like when you first came here? We can be pretty sure that you didn't receive a virtual coat, or a flagon of mudders' milk, or even a wilted strawberry. What was it, then, that made you feel at home here?

I love the Browncoat tradition! Plus the strawberries are delicious - I've had so many virtual strawberries I just had to go buy the real thing. mmmmm!

Seriously, I love the way the people on this site welcome new Browncoats. When I scan through the threads I always read the posts from new members and remember what my first time was like. I get a big goofy smile when someone gets a shiny new browncoat.

Lately I've been trying to figure out why the atmosphere on this site is so wonderful and supportive - what about Firefly might have caused this? I think it happened because Firefly is about finding family, even in the unlikeliest places. It doesn't hurt that the cast clearly loves eachother.

*raising a mug of Mudder's milk in honor of Joss, the cast, and all you lovely Browncoats*

DonCoat,

I just jumped into the threads flat footed and ran with questions and comments. A couple of days later I saw someone new start a thread and say hi and tell their story about how they came to love Firefly. So I commented and said I was feelin' kinda rude for not introducing myself and just jumping in. Got a torrent of "that's ok", " we love new folks", "no, you make yourself right at home!"s, just so many sweet things. I felt like I was home the first time I ever posted here. I have always known this was right where I was supposed to be.

So you see, there wasn't a virtual 'coat or strawberries in print.. but in the feelin' and greetin' it was already here.
