This may not work but I figured it might be fun to try it. Here's the idea (apols if it's been done before) but I'm gonna write a short bit of a firefly fanfic tale, and then someone else has to carry it on for a bit - before leaving it to someone else. Now sure, I know we may end up with a few people posting at once, or people beating each other to it, but shall we give it a shot anyway? might be fun.

I'll start with the opener:

Wash knew when he looked through the cockpit windows that they were in trouble. The yellowish-tan shape of the world before them, surrounded by straggling patches of cloud-cover, was not the inviting sight it should have been. For even though it meant the end of another long haul and the promise of payment, he couldn't avoid noticing the fact that there was an Alliance Cruiser parked between them and it - a cruiser that was now heading towards them...

- Shiny. Let's be bad guys.

That is not dead which can eternal lie, and with strange aeons even death may die

River paused. Normally she enjoyed the hectic atmosphere before the crew landed on a new planet. She liked to sit back and watch the crew scurry about, like the pet mice she kept as a child. But something was different this time. Something that made her heart pound and her skin crawl. And suddenly, the ghosts of men with hollow hearts were all that she could see.

I know, I know, it sucks.

"The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you."

This seems like a fun idea and a great start! Let's see if I can add a paragraph.

Mal entered the cockpit in time to hear Wash hiss out a sibilant Manderin curse.

"We got troubles?" the Captain asked shortly, his body tensing in the oh so familiar fight or flight reflex.

Wash didn't even bother glancing back at him, simply raising one hand to point out the front viewscreen as he spat out a single word. "Alliance."

Mal felt frozen into immobility for a brief second before he forced himself into action. Reaching a long arm over to the intercom panel he pressed a switch and spoke into it, trying to maintain a calm and even tone. "We've got company people. Seems the nice folks from an Alliance cruiser might be payin' us a visit. Simon, get your sister an' suit up. You know the drill."

He turned back to Wash just as a light started blinking on the pilot's console, adding lurid green highlights to his overbright shirt. Wash flashed Mal a tense look. "They're hailing us."

At Mal's nod he flicked a switch and a nasal voice filled the small space.

"Firefly vessel. Come about and prepare to be boarded."

Mal's face was tight as he mentally began reviewing options, but his mind went blank a moment later as the voice continued.

"We have reason to believe that you are carrying one Derrial Book."

Hope this is okay and not too long or anything! Wonder where it'll go!

Jayne froze in the doorway. He'd been heading into the bridge for some more of his daily HI-larious Wash-baitin', but the voice had stopped him cold.

"Aint never knowed his name was Derrial," he murmured to himself, almost in a whisper.

His eyes flickered round the cockpit, taking in everything, hoping the stillness of his stance weren't givin' away too much of how he felt. What in ruttin' hell were they wantin' with the Shepherd? Well, Mal might be able to stand back and act all nice as pie with em, but Ma Cobb's boy didn't stand for no hwoon dahn askin' after his friends in such a fashion.

Jayne's fingers danced lightly over the butt of the gun he kept fixed in his belt....

"Jayne go make sure anything that ought to be outta sight in the cargo bay is. Don't want them finding anythng extra," Mal directed pushing past the mercenary toward the passenger quarters. On his way Mal called to Kaylee in the engine room, "Kaylee we got Alliance boarding, power down."

Mal found Book quietly reading the bible in his bunk. "Preacher, we got Alliance boarding very soon and they're aksin' for you. You go somehting you want to tell me? Now'd be a good time to share it."

Mal, remembering the time the Aliance so willingly patched the preacher up after being shot says, "This wouldn't have anything to do with those Aliance boys fixin' you up that one time, would it? Somethin' tells me they ain't here to join a Bible study."
Book sighs and sets his Bible down as he starts to get up.
"Can't imagine what it could be, afterall, I am just a humble Shephard."
Mal not taking the bait doesn't reply. He just stands there staring at the preacher waiting for him to reveal the truth to him.

There was a moment of crackling tension as the two men faced each other, Mal's hard eyes locked with Book's soft and enigmatic ones.

Book was the one to break the silence, saying in a silky yet somehow unsettling voice "Son, you might want to be getting out of my way now." He gave a mirthless smile. "Unless you want to me to talk to the Alliance folks in my bunk."

Mal ground his teeth in frustration. He'd always allowed the Shepherd his secrets but they'd never come to bite him on the ass like this before. Still, with that damn great ship hovering out there waiting maybe now wasn't the time to force a confrontation. After all, this whole situation mught be just the key to letting some light into the shadows of Book's past.

He stood aside with a wryly courteous gesture and the Shepherd preceeded him out toward the cargo bay. Mal noticed that they'd gained a following as each member of the crew (that wasn't currently floating out in space) came to watch the introductions, each with a different expression on their face.

Kaylee's hands were ringing tightly together, a sign of nerves already reflected in her grime-streaked face.

"What's goin' on? The Shephard ain't ever hurt so much as a fly, right?"

Mal still had his gaze locked firmly on the Shepherd. "I've done a good deal a ponderin' on that there subject. I imagine we all have."

Wash hurried down the gantry to stand behind Zoe, in time to hear the question, and in time to check everybody's faces. Everybody was doing their damned best to keep any of their ambivalence from showing. Jayne, in particular, looked almost defensive of Book.

"Man's got a right to secrets," Cobb said. "Why have a mouth if we can't keep the damn thing shut, time to time?"

Book looked at him. "That's awful noble of you, son. Now if you don't mind, I'd like you to stand in front of me when that bay door opens. Nothing personal."

Everybody gave the hulking mercenary a knowing eye. Jayne was never the most trustworthy of folk. He shrugged indignantly, turned his attention to the ship's rear hatch.

"Besides," Book sighed, "I imagine they just want to compliment me on a sermon they once heard me give."

"I hope you're right," Mal said pointedly. "Derrial."

"Didn't even have t'go to the trouble o' hidin' them crates," Jayne muttered, "What they want with him anyway?"

Kaylee bit her lip, "Well, we can't just leave him with them, can we? I mean...we don't know why they took him. They might could wanna...torture him or somethin'."

"One thing havin' the Shepard here has taught me, little Kaylee," Mal responded, still watching the closed metal door as though it might spring to life and tell him the answers to everything he wished to know, "He can take care of his own self if'n he needs."

"Any thoughts as to why they want him?" Zoe asked, arms folded and frowning slightly, "I'm conjurin' it ain't for his preachin'."

"Maybe somethin' t'do with afore he were a Shepard, "Jayne shrugged, "He's mighty comfortable with a gun in his hand."

Mine is an evil sugar high laugh! Bwahahahaha!

Mal was watching Jayne cautiously. The big man's face was clouded with an unusually complex mix of emotions that seemed out of place on his rough cut features. His fingers were gripping and flexing over the butt of his sidearm in a manner that Mal wasn't altogether keen on. He looked dangerous, as if the slightest spark would cause him to explode. As surely as Mal did not want to provide that spark, he also didn't want Jayne to set off trouble that would as like to get them all killed.

"Jayne?" He called, slowly and calmly "You'd not be thinkin' on .." His words were cut off by the metallic hiss of the metal doors unsealing. They all started in surprise. They'd expected more time to figure things out. The Shepherd had barely been gone five minutes.

A tense silence fell as the doors slid open to reveal Book's closed, set face. He stood rigidly for a moment, his back to the Alliance Captain that stood at his shoulder.

The starched officer cleared his throat uncomfortably. "If it's any help, sir, I really am very sorry."

Book didn't turn but hunched his shoulders slightly and gave a small, mirthless smile. "Thankyou, son." he uttered in a wearly, gravelly voice. "But it's no help at all.". The bitter edge to his words cracked out like a whip, causing the Alliance soldier to step back in surprise. The doors slid shut in front of his unhappy face.

Mal stepped foreward. His burning curiousity combined with the seeting mess of frustration in his stomach from this whole situation, causing his tone to be sharp and abrupt as he snapped "Shepherd, You mind explainin'..."

Book didn't wait for him to finish, whipping his head round to pin Mal with a dark look, biting off the words "Yes, I do!" before striding past the others and out of the cargo bay.

Kaylee made a move to go after him, her pretty face crumpled with concern and confusion. Mal put out an arm to bar her path. "Leave him." he said softly, his eyes dwelling on what he'd seen flashing in those usually soft brown eyes that had sent shivers down his spine. "Let him be, for now." he qualified, as he stared after the retreating man. He would find out what was going on here. He just hoped it wasn't a secret that would rip apart their happy little group.

The ship had been sailing through the void for some time with the same uneasy atmosphere cloying around her decks. Book had holed himself up in his quarters and had made an express wish not to be disturbed.

Kaylee was on her way to the galley when she caught River lurking outside the preacher's room.

"River? Are you okay?"

"The clock stopped ticking."

"Come on away from there, darlin', Shepherd needs himself some alone time now."

"Won't start ticking again, needs new parts, Blue Men took them all away and buried them."

Kaylee held the younger girl's hands, tried to guide her away from the door. "What do you know, River?"

River's eyes narrowed as she concentrated, then suddenly seemed to regret pursing the line of thought. Her eyes went wide.

"The alarm is ringing. It's so loud. The bad men and the preacher man, they're all the same. Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock."

River let out a scream, then dropped onto her haunches, rocking back and forth.

"River," Kaylee soothed, "It's okay, mei mei, it's okay."

"Bad news," River whispered. "They gave him bad news. He's all alone. Never be fixed..."
