okay i've got a big question. or maybe a smaller one.

just how big is the verse of firefly. does it span a single system? or does it span many? my first instinct was that is spanned many and that the firefly drive was a superluminal drive...

but in serenity while traveling long distance serenity passes the reaver ship a rather slow relative speed. could it be that mankind left the earth that was and traveled out into the stars to settle a larger system, terraforming its planets and moons? could einstein be right? no superluminal?

also despite vowing to steer clear of niska in the train job mal and wash get nabbed on the planet that his station (which mal jayne and zoe visited in train job) orbits.

half a planet seems a bit like looking for trouble if the verse spans many systems, i'd think avoiding niskas planet would be more along the lines of steering clear. if its a galaxy of systems i think i'd avoid his whole damn system.

it's a bit murky.

any opinions or other bits that anyone has picked up would be appreciated.

cheers

matt

p.s. let it be known that i for one, greatly enjoy the character of kaylee - even tho polls show that most of you don't!

In one of the deleted scenes from "Our Mrs. Reynolds", Mal says something like "We've settled about 70 Earths, and the meek ain't inherited a one of 'em." I'm pretty sure we don't have quite that many planets and moons in our little system here, but I could be wrong.

Also, in "Serenity, Part 1" the Alliance officer refers to the Serenity as "rapidding" away from the illegal salvage op, which seems to indicate FTL (but perhaps not?).

To the estimation of our little group where I live, they have terraformed planets and moons in several systems, and have some kind of FTL drive. Our group refer to them as IJD drives, or "It Just Does". It seems clear that Mr. Whedon doesn't wish to delve too deeply into the technology, and would much rather focus on the story. Which is why I've taken to just accepting some of the apparent inconsistencies... the story is more important than the science.

It's not always quite that easy... they've indicated in other episodes that they can't always pick and choose where they go, especially if they're low on fuel.

Also, did they mention the name of the planet specifically? Could it be a mobile station?

Wash is my favorite, but I like Kaylee too.

I think the line is "They're rabbiting," as in running away.

Oh, my God! Who's flying this thing? Oh, right, that would be me...
