In Ariel, River slashes Jayne with a chef's knife. I always thought this was some wacky way of showing that she was getting worse, but I just noticed...

She slashes straight through the BLUE SUN logo on Jayne's muscle shirt, and then announces that "he looks better in red". Now I want to see if he's wearing red when he does something nice for River.

And a question:

Why are there two Chinese translations for "Blue Sun"? The one on Jayne's shirt is familiar to me through my brief stint in Japan, but there is another one. Is that traditional Chinese? If you want to see it, Haken uses it as one of the avatar icons on this site. I'd type it, but I have no Chinese language support here.

Whoa. That is weird. The one Haken uses, which is the same as in the Blue Sun commercial seen in Ariel, is the correct translation. The one on Jayne's shirt (which is the same as the one he wore in "Bushwacked") is incorrect. I'm fairly certain the first character on his shirt is "qing1", which is another word for green (the one I usually use is "lu(with diaeresis)4"). So Jayne's shirt actually says "Green Sun" in Chinese, but "Blue Sun" in English. I wonder if this is significant? Or just an error by a prop guy/translator? Very odd.

Addendum: I just looked at the Eavesdown Docks scene in "Serenity" where there's a Blue Sun logo, and while I'm not absolutely certain, I think it was the Jayne shirt version too. Maybe it was a mistake that was later corrected? And they just never bothered to change Jayne's shirt from "Bushwacked." Now I'm tempted to go through all the eps looking for the Blue Sun logos to compare and contrast.

I also noticed a bunch of "Tai4Kong1" (basically means aerospace) logos in "Serenity", but the English symbols were "TG". Who knows... the Chinese translator they used really wasn't the best with a lot of the phrases.

There's a very thorough response from FFYING2: http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=14&t=1782

So is the old style (靑日) a typo or not? Since there is a font for it, it must be correct. But I've heard from people on this site and my own translator at work that it's misspelled (should be 青日).

I think when River says, "You look better in red", she's implying blood. And there are many theroies about Blue Sun, so she could of ment that Blue Sun looked better in red.

Yeah, I asked a higher authority (aka a parent) later and learned qing1 can mean blue as well. Though I've never heard lan2 (from the newer logo) defined as anything other than blue. Maybe indigo, but no green in there.

As for the old style character, I did just notice it's not the way I've always seen qing1 written. I've never seen that character in a Chinese dictionary before, so I'm not sure what's up with that. The higher authority says it might be a way some people write qing1, but it doesn't look like a real character to her. I'll update this post when I ask somebody else.

BTW, how do you input Chinese in here? It doesn't seem to be GB or Big5.

The qing1 they use in Serenity (signs), Bushwhacked and Ariel (Jayne's T-shirt), and Shindig (food cartons) is an older variant, viewable as an image here:
http://www.unicode.org/cgi-bin/GetUnihanData.pl?codepoint=9751 .

It's also in my Japanese character dictionary as an older form for Japanese "ao."

For those who don't know: in Japanese the character is used in words meaning blue, blue-green, and sometimes green for vegetables or figuratively for youth. Qing1 seems to have the same uses in Mandarin. But it's the main "blue" in Japanese and apparently a rare "blue" in Mandarin.

So far, I've only noticed the new lan2ri4 logo from the Fox site in The Message (in the video ad outside the space station before Womack gets there).

As for posting characters, the windows-1252 character set that Haken uses displays traditional and simplified characters, pasted-in ones at least.

ALIENZOOKEEPER

I'm a big fan of Firefly (i own the DVD) and of Dark Angel (don't own, will buy them soon) and i always wondered if he looks better in read was a quote from Dark angel. It comes up there, in an episode. While there may have been bad blood between fandoms, i never imagined that James Cameron and Joss Whedon were at odds- Cameron just went on to other projects.

Oh, that's interesting. Did you know that Ariel was written by Jose Molina, who used to write/story edit for Dark Angel?

Maybe that was sort of an in-joke?

Those whacky Chinese... Since the characters are so similar, I'm happy to accept them as both correct. I just wanted to know what to put on my T-shirts.

Haken's site is all Unicode, isn't it? I was a little annoyed to see Unicode in quotes appearing as ???? marks, but what can you do? Learn Pin Yin, I guess.

BTW: I've been abusing my Chinese translator at work (not that way, sickos) and he told me this: Pin Yin daeretics can be 1 (flat tone), 2 (rising tone), 3 (dip down, then up), 4 (falling tone) or 5 (quite). I wish I had a better explanation.

I prefer to look for a little more depth. Jayne looking better in blood is too simple. He does start wearing red shirts in the later episodes, doesn't he?
