Attention Browncoats!

Miss your weekly Firefly fix? Want to see your BDHs on your television screen again? I invite you to come check out www.stillflying.net!

Our fan-fiction project is titled "Virtual Firefly: Here's How It Might Have Been."

What have we done? Out of love for Joss' show and characters, a small crew of writers, editors and artists have been working together for some time now to finish off Season 1 of Firefly and write a full 22-episode Season 2 based on the movie Serenity. Our episodes are written in television-script format to allow our readers to "see" the episodes play out in their mind's-eye.

In essence, we asked ourselves, "What could have been done had Firefly not been cancelled?"

Virtual Season 1 includes 7 episodes, starting where Firefly left off, and ending with a season finale based on the Serenity comic book. Ever been curious as to what happened between the television series and the comic book? The answers are here.

Virtual Season 2 will expand the story of the Serenity movie into 22 television episodes. The overall story arc will be faithful to the movie, but the journey there will have its share of twists and turns. It is going to be a fun ride.

Soon to air is Episode 4 of Season 2, titled "Fireworks." Come see what happens when Mal spends Unification Day on an Alliance-friendly planet, not just an Alliance-friendly bar!

If you are missing your BDHs, join us at www.stillflying.net for a spell. You might just like what you see.

We're Still Flying!

Very good work. Really, i just finished those left behind and am about to start reading season 2. Now, are you going to basically explain serenity, but in 22 episodes? And just out of curiosity, what do you guys have planned for season 3+. Maybe you could ask joss to give you what he was planning, so that we can KNOW for sure inara and books secrets, etc. maybe.

anyway keep up the good work. I really enjoy reading the scripts.

Our goal for season two is to basically tell the story of the Big Damned Movie as Joss might have told it had he done it over the course of a season. So, you'll recognize a lot of specific scenes, and locations, but there are sub-plots and twists that have nothing to do with the movie.

Keeping things vague for those who haven't read them yet, we've already visited Haven a few times (in both season one and season two), and one of our season two episodes features both the crew's first meeting with Mister Universe and explains how they went to work for Mingo and Fanty.

As for Book and Inara's secrets... in the absence of any official word from Joss, we're making our best guess, based on what we know from the TV show, movie, and other material.

For season three and beyond, we're going to try to remain true to the feel of Whedon's vision. He has stated that he thought of the series as going seven seasons, so that's what we're thinking in terms of.

We will hold the line until Joss comes back to us.

Definitely the best fanfiction out there. It's script-structured, and rivals Firefly's scripts in their balance between plot, character development, and humor. Don't forget action. I've wanted to see every one of these episodes (besides, perhaps, Hero Complex) on my television screen, and have definitely left each episode thinking: this is how it mights have been.

Hero Complex is abit of a odd one out episode. Its certainly much darker than alot of the others, and possibly doesn't quite gel with some of the others but there is some good parts there.

Season 2 is good. The next episode to be aired is called Fireworks and is so very very good (I proof read it ) and if I had a choice of episodes (so far) to be filmed it would be this.

As the person who created the story for "Hero Complex" and who was origially slated to write/co-write the episode (real-life concerns ended up keeping me from fulfilling my writing duties), I'm interested in hearing more about your thoughts on the episode.

In terms of the darkness of the episode, I don't personally think it's any darker than, for example, "War Games", but it's certainly more visceral than any of the other episodes of the series (either ours or Joss') and for good reason, since it needs to serve as a sort of sequel to "War Games" and to tie up loose ends from that episode and to serve as a bridge between preceding and proceeding events such as Kaylee's confrontation with Early from OiS and Inara's departure from Serenity. The episode's events also serve to sort of foreshadow Mal's eventual backwards slide into darkness and aloofness.

It wasn't that it was dark. The trouble is more that

Niska dies,

and that it's Jayne who kills him. Ana was cool, and the whole involvement that the crew had with the situation was believable, but I think that the torture that Niska put them through would have lasting effects on the crew's relationships, let alone physical damage. After all, we see that Mal hasn't quite recovered from his "War Stories" wounds by the movie; certainly, less tough members of the crew would have even more noticable changes by that time. But really, it's the episode's conclusion, and the removal from the story of a great and menacing character that shakes my enjoyment of the episode. I think that the villain could have been put to a more climactic death by the one who hates him most: Mal.

I don't want to sidetrack folks from the discussion of "Hero Complex" (or, heck, any Virtual Firefly topic), but I want to let y'all know that episode 2x04: "Fireworks" is avaiable on the site.

We've also added "Bonus Material" for 2x03: "Salvage," in the form of some alternate and deleted scenes.

Head on over to www.stillflying.net to check things out, then come back here to discuss or join us in our forum!

Keep flying!

The reason we ultimately went with Niska dying the way he did is because we wanted to show Jayne trying (and failing) to make up for the mistake he made in Ariel; we also wanted to put Mal into a situation where he doesn't get to become the hero (which, especially in regards to Inara, is gonna screw with his mind and lead him back to the darker, more aloof Mal that we see by the beginning of the events in the film).

As to why we killed Niska off, we wanted to tie up loose ends from Season 1 and allow ourselves a 'clean slate' heading into Season 2, and Niska's death felt like the best way to resolve his particular storyline from "War Stories". We'd initially discussed having Mal be the one to kill Niska, but when the episode became more and more about Jayne and his attempt to absolve himself of his guilt over Ariel and become a hero, it felt right that he be the one to be responsible for killing Niska; I also felt that, like I said, it'd give us more layers to work with in terms of sliding Mal backwards into his aloof, darker personality if Mal wasn't the one to 'get the job done' in killing Niska.

As to any residual effects from what happens in "Hero Complex", the events of that episode further Inara's decision to leave the ship, contribute to Book's decision to leave the ship, and have a profound effect on Kaylee's psyche (which is really evident in "Property Rights" and her interaction with her parents). Also, I can tell you that we're going to be seeing some profound stuff happening in regards to Zoe and Wash and their role(s) on the ship in coming Season 2 episodes, and that the events of "Hero Complex" are going to play a part in what's coming up.

Shameless bump... because we believe in our stuff and we know you'll love it.

An update folks:

We have our 5th episode for Season 2 ready to go. It will hopefully be posted within hours... and it is fan-bloody-tastic.
(I can say that, because I didn't write it.)

For those of you who are not familiar with our project, Still Flying is a fan-based site dedicated to a "virtual continuation" of Joss Whedon's "Firefly" in the form of scripts of additional episodes. We've rounded out Season One, completing it with seven new episodes (including a season finale based on "Serenity: Those Left Behind" from Dark Horse Comics).

Season Two is dedicated to exploring the question, "What would things have been like if Joss Whedon had been able to tell the story of Serenity in 22 episodes rather than 2 hours?" Our story will take you to most of the same places the movie does, but the path along the way will be a little different, and a lot longer.

We'll see some old friends and more than a few old enemies. We can't promise that we'll entertain you as much as Mister Whedon would have, but you should know that this project has been put together by those who care about the show, and we're taking this bird up out of love.

Like most Browncoats, we know that Whedon will return to us with another movie, book, or some other way to continue the tale he started in "Firefly." Until that time, we'll be here. We will hold the line.

We can't show you exactly how Joss Whedon would've done it, but we can tell you...
